A 36-year-old man is accused of going on a killing spree in Texas on Monday night, CBSDFW reported.
Police in Terrell, a town 30 miles east of Dallas, said a shooting rampage over several hours left at least five people dead.
“We’re all in a state of shock,” said Terrell Police Chief Jody Lay. “This is going to have a big impact on us.”
The shootings began around 5 p.m. Monday when police started finding bodies. The first victim was discovered in a home with a bullet wound to the head. Officers were investigating that death when they received word of an arson and a second body nearby.
A friend of the suspect was shot at in a third location, but was not injured.
Around 10:30 p.m., police found two more victims shot to death inside a home. Authorities also discovered a 3-year-old child at the location, uninjured in bed.

On Dec. 14, 2012, 20-year-old Adam Lanza — armed with his mother’s guns — stormed into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., and murdered 20 children and six adult members of staff. As the nation mourned in the wake of that unthinkable tragedy, many citizens and lawmakers raised their voices to demand stricter gun control laws, President Obama vowed to use his power to curb gun violence. “We’re not doing enough,” he said at a December vigil. “And we will have to change.” Tragically, change has been slow in coming.
According to Slate’s gun deaths tally project, at least 9,901 gun-related deaths in the United States have been reported by the media since the Newtown shooting.
This number, says Slate, is a gross underestimate of the actual number of deaths caused by guns in the last 10 months.

Manslaughter charges were filed against three people accused of killing a 3-year-old Florida boy by wrapping him tightly in a blanket and tying the ends as a form of discipline, a Lee County Sheriff’s lieutenant said on Wednesday.
.
Defendant Donella Trainor, a friend of the boy’s grandmother, told investigators she had disciplined her own grandchildren that way, using a technique all three adults knew as “the wrap,” Lieutenant Larry King said.He said she pinned the boy’s arms to his side and rolled him in a king-sized blanket.
.
“There were six layers of cloth over this child. The loose ends would be folded over his head and feet and tied into a knot, all in an effort to prevent the child from moving,” King said. “You could use a mummy reference.”
The boy, Michael Lee McMullen, screamed and pleaded to be released as Trainor wrapped him and put him in his crib for a nap on Saturday, the sheriff’s report said.

The 12-year-old student who opened fire on a Nevada middle school campus, wounding two classmates and killing a teacher before he turned the gun on himself, got the weapon from his home, authorities said Tuesday.
Washoe County School District police said they are still working to determine how the boy obtained the 9mm semi-automatic Ruger handgun used in the Monday morning spree at Sparks Middle School. The boy’s parents are cooperating with authorities and could face charges in the case, police said.
Authorities say they’re withholding the seventh-grader’s name out of respect for his family.
At a news conference Tuesday, law enforcement and school officials again lauded the actions of 45-year-old math teacher and former Marine Michael Landsberry, who tried to stop the rampage before he was killed.
“I cannot express enough appreciation for Mr. Landsberry,” Washoe County School District Superintendent Pedro Martinez said. “He truly is a hero.”

After nearly two years of hardship and four days under the national spotlight, Daisy Coleman finally received some good news.
“I was more than excited. I felt like I was going to be able to work with someone who would put forth a real effort,” Coleman told reporters on Wednesday after the Nodaway County, Mo., prosecuting attorney announced that he would seek a special prosecutor to review the dropped charges against a former high school football player accused of sexually assaulting her in 2012.
Daisy’s case received widespread attention following a poignant feature published in the Kansas City Star. “Nightmare In Maryville” describes the struggles endured by Coleman, questions how officials handled the investigation and highlights one of the suspects’ political connections.
“Just to have people listen and look at it with an objective eye is huge for us because we haven’t had that until this point,” said Melinda Coleman, Daisy’s mother, according to KSHB.

A two-decade family feud came to a violent end when a man shot dead the two home invaders that killed his wife and son, not knowing the assailants included his long-estranged daughter, authorities said Sunday.
Though the investigation of Friday’s shootings continues, authorities said it appears Josephine and Jeffrey Ruckinger planned to murder her family at their rural central Pennsylvania home – but it remains unclear what exactly led to the deadly confrontation.
“They parked at the bottom of a long driveway, and walked up, heavily armed,” said Cambria County District Attorney Kelly Callihan.
Josephine Ruckinger was armed with a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun and her husband had a Derringer pistol and a .22-caliber semi-automatic handgun as they approached the Frew family home in Ashville, about 40 miles southwest of State College, according to investigators.
John Frew, his wife Roberta, and their son John Jr., 47, had just returned from dinner out, and were watching TV in the living room of the white mobile home when there was a knock at the door, authorities said.

She was trusted to take care of defenseless children, but now one Ohio daycare worker is accused of doing the unthinkable — and filming it.
Heather Koon, 25, faces two counts of rape after police say they found video on her laptop of her “engaging in sexual conduct with an unknown infant.” An investigation also revealed an additional victim, according to WOIO.
Police allegedly found the video on Koon’s laptop at the apartment where her boyfriend, James Osborne, lives. Osborne is a registered sex offender. Both Koon and Osborne were arrested Oct. 4 within hours of each other, and were held at Lorain County Jail.
UPDATE: Oct. 8, 8:15 a.m. — At her arraignment Oct. 7, prosecutors said that the state has “very strong evidence” against Koon, and stated that her alleged victims were between the ages 1 and 2, WKYC reported. Her bond was set at $2 million — $1 million for each felony count.

Kwame Kilpatrick was sentenced to 28 years in prison Thursday, seven months after he was convicted of public corruption in federal court.
It marks the end to another chapter in the saga of Kilpatrick, who was elected mayor of Detroit at the young age of 31. Once mentioned as a possible candidate for president later in life, Detroit’s “hip-hop mayor,” now 43, is generally credited as one of America’s worst mayoral leaders of the past decade.
The former Detroit mayor’s sentencing recommendation called for at least 28 years to life for Kilpatrick, who prosecutors say robbed the City of Detroit of millions through criminal enterprises when it was at its most desperate. It’s “equal to the longest sentence” for corruption ever handed down to a public official, said U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade after the sentencing was announced.
Judge Nancy Edmunds, who announced the sentence Thursday, said that it was important to look at the entire history of the defendant, noting that Kilpatrick’s numerous convictions regarding criminal enterprise were drawn from crimes committed during his entire six-year tenure as Detroit mayor, and possibly even during his time in the Michigan Legislature. It was also important to consider the enormity of the investigation — Edmunds said 34 other people have been convicted for crimes pertaining to Kilpatrick.

A cigarette butt proved to be the undoing of a man suspected of killing a girl in Utah 18 years ago, after a sheriff trailed him for four days to grab the DNA evidence.
Without the efforts of Wasatch County Sheriff Todd Bonner, the case would have been forgotten long ago. For Bonner, however, it was personal. As the original investigator in the bludgeoning death of the teenage prostitute in 1995, he couldn’t let it go.
“It was haunting me my whole career,” Bonner told The Associated Press on Friday. “It doesn’t matter that she was a street girl. This is a 17-year-old girl – a human being. I could care less what she did for a living. She was doing what she had to survive.”
The body of Krystal Lynn Beslanowitch was found Dec. 6, 1995, along the Provo River near Midway.
