More than 4 percent of inmates sentenced to death in the United States are probably innocent, according to a study published Monday that sent shock waves across the anti-death penalty community.
What the researchers call a “conservative estimate” about the number of wrongfully convicted death row inmates is more than double the percentage of capital defendants who were exonerated during more than three decades that were studied. That means innocent people are languishing behind bars, according to the study.
“The great majority of innocent people who are sentenced to death are never identified and freed,” said Samuel Gross, lead author of the study and a University of Michigan Law School professor, in a statement. “The purpose of our study is to account for the innocent defendants who are not exonerated.”

Cops say a Tennessee teen who got arrested for driving with a suspended license on Monday had a surprise in store for police.
When a female corrections officer at Kingsport jail performed a search on 19-year-old Dallas Archer, she allegedly discovered an “unknown object” lodged in the young woman’s crotch. She alerted another female officer, who accompanied her during a further examination, according to documents obtained by the Smoking Gun.
The officers allegedly discovered a loaded, five-shot, four-inch .22 caliber mini-revolver concealed in Archer’s vagina. It turns out that the gun was stolen last year when John Souther’s car was “ransacked” in an auto burglary, cops said.

Poor Kimberley Davis.
The 21-year-old Australian woman was livid when she slammed into a bicyclist while texting late last year, putting dents in her car. The victim suffered a spinal fracture and would spend the next three months in a hospital, but Davis wasn’t having any of it, The Standard reports.
“I just don’t care because I’ve already been through a lot of bullshit and my car is, like, pretty expensive and now I have to fix it,” she told a responding officer two days after the Sept. 20 collision. “I’m kind of pissed off that the cyclist has hit the side of my car. I don’t agree that people texting and driving could hit a cyclist. I wasn’t on my phone when I hit the cyclist.”

A white supremacist site has blood on its hands, according to a new report.
Stormfront.org is linked to close to 100 killings in the last five years, the Southern Poverty Law Center found.
From the Guardian:
The White Nationalist web forum Stormfront.org says it promotes values of “the embattled white minority,” and its users include Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in a 2011 massacre in Norway, and Wade Michael Page, who shot and killed six people at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin in 2012.

Frazier Glenn Cross, the man suspected of killing three people in two separate shootings at Jewish centers in Overland Park, Kan., on Sunday was captured on camera making pro-Nazi comments.
The video, which was taken by Kansas City news station KMBC, shows the suspected gunman after he was taken into custody in the parking lot of an elementary school near the scene of the attacks at the Jewish Community Center and the Village Shalom assisted living center.
From the back of the police cruiser, Cross shouted what sounded like “Heil Hitler!”

Ali Safran wanted to turn the anniversary of the date she was sexually assaulted into something positive. The Mount Holyoke College senior didn’t expect the resulting project in its first year to grow into a nonprofit corporation that inspired legislation in California and created classroom lessons used as far away as Turkey.
Safran, now 21, launched Surviving In Numbers on April 1, 2013 — the start of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. She invited other victims of sexual assault to write on poster board what happened as a result of the attacks, with numbers, then photographed each person holding the poster in front of their face. She arranged to display the photos on campuses in Massachusetts. Word spread. The number of posters grew.
One year later, Surviving In Numbers has helped tell the story of 410 survivors, collected 2,200 Tumblr followers and has had visitors from 12 countries.

A 14-year-old Idaho boy confessed Monday to the grisly murders of his brother and father on March 24, according to court documents obtained by multiple local media outlets.
Eldon Samuel III allegedly took a .45 caliber pistol hidden underneath a couch at their home in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, and shot his father, Eldon Gail Samuel Jr., 46, in the stomach. Samuel III told investigators his dad often “beat him,” and that he thought his father — who had been taking medication while “talking about zombies” — was coming after him, reports The Spokesman-Review.
According to a police report, the suspect said his father then crawled to another room where his younger brother, Jonathan Samuel, 13, was hiding under a bed. Samuel III told authorities he then shot his father three more times: twice in the cheek and once in the “brain,” per the Coeur D’Alene Press.

Drug abuse is a scary thing. To further illustrate that point, Rehabs.com has posted a follow up to its anti-methamphetamine campaign “Horrors of Meth.”
“Faces of Drug Arrests,” a new series of shocking images, depicts the decline of different suspects physical appearance over the years via their mugshots. The individuals shown were all arrested for drug and drug-related offenses involving meth, heroin, cocaine, and prescription drugs.
It’s worth noting that some of the changes in these suspects’ faces could be due to natural aging, and other issues, such as hygiene or illness, could contribute to the dramatic transformations captured in the series.

A proposed law seeking tough new penalties for marrying children has triggered intense debate in Pakistan.
At the moment, females can legally tie the knot at 16 while males must wait until they are 18. However, it is customary for younger teen girls to be married by their families in some parts of the country. Girls are also sometimes offered as compensation to end feuds between families.
Anyone involved in underage wedlock currently faces a $10 fine, possibly accompanied by up to a month in jail. But lawmaker Marvi Memon is fighting for this to be increased to $1,000 – which is about a month’s wage for a recent graduate working at a bank — and a possible jail sentence of two years.
