When a bullet pierces flesh, it ripples through the tissue in a chaotic fury. It will inevitably shred nerves, blood vessels and muscle. It might fracture bone. Deposit in an organ. Or zip out through another body part, leaving blood to ooze from the open pit.
Sometimes, the bullet carves a fatal path: About 36,000 Americans were killed by a firearm in 2015, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The majority of those deaths — almost two-thirds — were the result of suicide and involved mostly men 45 and older taking their own lives. Another third of deaths were linked to homicides, while the remaining sliver involved accidental shootings.
Most often, however, the bullet fails to kill: In 2015, nearly 85,000 people who were treated in emergency rooms survived. For those gunshot victims, their wounds were likely non-life-threatening — in either the legs or arms, National Institutes of Health data show. A smaller percentage of assaults or accidental shootings involved getting struck in the head or neck, with only about one-third of those victims surviving long enough to reach a hospital.

Members of Smith’s family could be heard crying in court as the verdict was read. Smith’s death sparked days of unrest in Milwaukee.
.
Shortly after the verdict, Smith family attorney David Owens said they had filed a lawsuit against Heaggan-Brown and the city. The suit claims Milwaukee kept the former officer on the job despite a “pervasive pattern of excessive force and misconduct,” including at least 16 “use of force” incidents.

A Virginia man was charged with murdering a Muslim teenager he allegedly confronted near a mosque in Sterling.
Fairfax County Police identified the suspect as Darwin A. Martinez Torres, a 22-year-old Sterling resident.
Police believe the incident was prompted by road rage. They are not currently investigating the death as a hate crime.
The victim, identified by relatives to The Washington Post as Nabra Hassanen, 17, was walking with her friends near the All Dulles Area Muslim Society Center about 4 a.m. on Sunday after Ramadan prayers when the group allegedly got into some kind of dispute with Martinez Torres, who reportedly drove past in a car.

A Norristown, Pennsylvania, judge declared a mistrial in a court case that accused entertainer Bill Cosby of sexually assaulting a former employee of his alma mater in his home in 2004.
Cosby, 79, could have been convicted of three felony counts of aggravated indecent assault that carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
Judge Steven O’Neill declared the mistrial Saturday morning after the jury of seven men and five women failed to reach a unanimous consensus on a verdict after 52 hours.

After five days and more than 25 hours of deliberation, a jury decided that the state did not meet its burden for a conviction. Yanez would have faced up to 10 years under Minnesota law if he had been convicted.
Yanez had been charged with manslaughter and reckless discharge of a firearm for fatally shooting Castile, 32, in his car while Castile’s girlfriend and her 4-year-old daughter were sitting in the vehicle just outside St. Paul, Minnesota.
The jury that determined Yanez’s fate consisted of seven men and five women. Two jurors were black and the rest were white.
