Downs — who retired in 1999 — was essentially there for the very start of commercial television, serving as the announcer for the children’s show “Kukla, Fran and Ollie” and comedy legend Sid Caesar’s “Caesar’s Hour” in the 1950s.

In 1957, when Paar succeeded Steve Allen as host of “The Tonight Show,” Downs became the announcer. The next year, Downs launched his run as the original host of the game show “Concentration.”

Compared to the unsolved mysteries of the universe, far less gets said about one of the most profound facts to have crystallized in physics over the past half-century: To an astonishing degree, nature is the way it is because it couldn’t be any different. “There’s just no freedom in the laws of physics that we have,” said Daniel Baumann, a theoretical physicist at the University of Amsterdam.
Since the 1960s, and increasingly in the past decade, physicists like Baumann have used a technique known as the “bootstrap” to infer what the laws of nature must be. This approach assumes that the laws essentially dictate one another through their mutual consistency — that nature “pulls itself up by its own bootstraps.” The idea turns out to explain a huge amount about the universe.

These three objects illustrate the principles behind “spin,” a property of fundamental particles. A domino needs a full turn to get back to the same place. A two of clubs needs only a half turn. And the hour hand on a clock must spin around twice before it tells the same time again.

American comedy legend Carl Reiner has passed away from natural causes at the age of 98. Reiner was a man of many talents – a director, a writer, an actor, a producer, and more, who shaped the face of US comedy across multiple decades.
His filmography is perhaps best remembered for his run of iconic comedy movies made with Steve Martin – 1979’s The Jerk, followed by Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid in 1982, The Man With Two Brains in 1983, and All Of Me in 1984 – widely considered to be some of the funniest movies ever made, filled with iconic lines and performances. Reiner also had a legendary partnership with Mel Brooks, the pair creating the 2000 Years Old Man sketch and releasing a series of comedy albums together.
As an actor, Reiner became known to a different generation by joining the cast of Steven Soderbergh’s 2001 Ocean’s Eleven remake, as well as its two sequels. Across those films, he played Saul Bloom – the veteran con artist who acts as a mentor to George Clooney’s Danny Ocean and Brad Pitt’s Rusty Ryan. His final screen role came in last year’s Toy Story 4, in a brief voice cameo as Bonnie’s forgotten dinosaur toy ‘Carl Reineroceros’, joined by ‘Chairol Burnett’, ‘Melephant Brooks’, and ‘Bitey White’ (Carol Burnett, Mel Brooks, and Betty White respectively). “It was fun to partner with Mel Brooks and be a small part of such an iconic franchise,” he told EW of the role.

On the morning of Saturday, August 2nd, I got in a taxi in Erbil, the regional capital of Kurdish Iraq, and asked the driver to take me to the Khazir refugee camp.
This was a scary-ish thing to do.
The “scary” part is a result of the fact that the Khazir camp is outside of the borders of the somewhat autonomous Kurdish region, one of the only secure parts of the country.
The “ish” part comes from the fact that the Khazir camp, though outside of Kurdish borders, is still in an area currently controlled by the Peshmerga—the Kurdish army.
Iraq has been a scary place for a while now, for a number of reasons, but it’s currently scary in italics because of the terrorist group we’ve all gotten to know about in the past three months—ISIS.

The EU has formally agreed on a set of recommendations for the nationalities of travelers that should be allowed to enter its borders, effective from July 1 — and the US is not included.
And while US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has stressed the “importance” of reconnecting the US and EU during the coronavirus pandemic, one graphic shows exactly why European countries are shutting Americans out.

The two curves clearly show the EU and the US heading in opposite directions in dealing with the Covid-19 outbreak. New confirmed daily cases in the EU peaked around mid-March and are on a clear downward trend, with cases below 10,000 for more than a month. In the US, new cases are on a steep upward trajectory.
Many European countries went into a strict lockdown early, and EU nations have been reopening gradually and cautiously as their cases numbers decline.

Eighty-eight percent of Catalina Island is within the Catalina Island Conservancy, one of the oldest private land trusts in Southern California. Many visitors enjoy exploring the 37.2-mile Trans Catalina Trail.
If hiking outside of Avalon, you’ll need a hiking permit. You can get your permit, free of charge, online at the Catalina Island Conservancy, at the Conservancy House in Avalon, the Nature Center at Avalon Canyon, the Hermit Gulch campground office, Airport in the Sky, and Two Harbors Visitor Services.
For your safety, stay on designated trails and follow these recommended hiking tips:
