L’Île-Rousse is a commune in the Haute-Corse department of France on the island of Corsica.
It was founded in 1758 by Pasquale Paoli to create a port that would not be in the hands of the Genoese (such as Calvi). As Italian was until 1848 the administrative language of Corsica, the town was originally named Isola Rossa (Red Island) from the eponymous reddish color of a rocky islet that served as a natural harbor.
Along with Saint-Florent, it is one of only two communes in the département to have a French name — all the others have kept their Italian names despite the repeated demands of Corsican nationalists.
Inhabited since very ancient times (between 5000-3000 BC), l’Île-Rousse was in 1000 BC a small, prosperous town called Agilla; it was dependent on Tyre in Phoenicia. Destroyed by the Phoenician fleet of Calaris (Galeria), Agilla came under Roman rule as Rubico Rocega (red rock) until the 4th century AD. Being so close to the sea, it was threatened by pirates and other potential enemies and was not inhabited for several centuries except for fishermen and peasants who lived on the products of the sea and earth around the villages of Santa Reparata and Monticello.
In the 17th century, merchants from Santa-Reparata-di-Balagna established shops to trade by sea with the coastal villages of the Balagne, Nebbio, and the west of the Cap Corse. About 1759, Pasquale Paoli, who often came to Balagne, decided to equip Corsica with a port in the northwest of the island to try to cut the sea traffic between Genoa and Calvi. His plans prepared, he persuaded the Balagne government, sitting in Algajola, to authorize him to create a fort protecting the port (the Scalu) on 10 December 1765. Remember when web browsers were useful tools? Remember when you could follow sites you liked, check your email, and see your calendar, all without leaving the browser? Or, I should say, remember when you could do all that without Big Tech feeding your personal data into the yawning maw of surveillance capitalism?
I remember those days because I am still living in them, thanks to a web browser you might not have heard of: Vivaldi.
This week, the team behind the Vivaldi web browser released version 4.0, which seems like an appropriate time for me to tell you that you need to try it out. To riff off Neil Stephenson, Vivaldi outshines all other web browsers “in approximately the same way that the noonday sun does the stars … it is not just bigger and brighter; it simply makes everything else vanish.”

York, known as the White Rose City (after the symbol of the House of York), is the county seat of York County, Pennsylvania, the United States, located in the south-central region of the state. The population within York’s city limits was 43,718 at the 2010 census, a 7.0% increase from the 2000 census count of 40,862. When combined with the adjacent boroughs of West York and North York and surrounding Spring Garden, West Manchester, and Springettsbury townships, the population of Greater York was 108,386. York is the 11th largest city in Pennsylvania.
The city has been called an “architectural museum,” because the downtown features numerous well-preserved historic structures, such as the 1741 Golden Plough Tavern, the 1751 General Horatio Gates House, the 1766 York Meetinghouse, the 1863 Billmeyer House, the 1888 York Central Market, and the 1907 Moorish Revival Temple Beth Israel. I’ve been a happy renter since I moved to Washington, D.C., seven years ago. Neither of my apartments has been luxurious. But in an expensive city with limited housing, I paid a below-market rate for my first place (my roommate and I had our own bedrooms, thanks to a makeshift wall). Later, when I wanted to live alone, I landed an underpriced studio in a rent-controlled building. But as more friends purchase shiny condos or casually speculate about future plans to buy, I wonder whether buying is something I should consider.
The nagging feeling that buying is something you should do is one big reason that millennials choose to buy, says Bill Nelson, a certified financial planner and founder of Pacesetter Planning near Boston. We’ve also been told that buying is an investment, and renting is “just throwing money away.”

Lighthouse Pietra also referred L’Île-Rousse lighthouse is located on the coastal town L’Île-Rousse, northwest of Corsica.
It was established in 1857 on the top of the island of Pietra, a dyke linking the port entrance. The lighthouse is meant to indicate the port and assist mariners in their approach.
Its construction was part of a second campaign headlights equipment in Corsica like including headlights of the citadel of Ajaccio port or the port of Bastia.
High of 12.65 m and overlooking the sea level of 64 m, the lighthouse was equipped initially with a fixed red light and a white light more powerful in 1877 and finally a fire 3 bursts every 12 seconds in 1902.
Now automated, electrically powered by solar panels, the beacon of Pietra architecturally present in the form of a painted white square tower while the lantern is painted green. The old house adjacent to the lighthouse, dedicated to security, has been preserved.
The lighthouse can not be visited but can be a walk on the site where one enjoys an unparalleled view of the sea and the harbor entrance.

Black homeownership has declined in the city and nationally in the last 20 years, hindered by gentrification and inequitable lending policies.
Kirkland Lynch, a 35-year-old Black renter, has a six-figure job with Google, a law degree from Harvard, sterling credit and a mortgage pre-approval. But after a six-month house hunt in Brooklyn, with six unsuccessful bids, he is close to giving up, disheartened by slights that verge on discrimination.
“It doesn’t have anything to do with race,” he said. “Other than the fact it has everything to do with race.”
The pandemic has compounded the challenges of an already difficult housing market, particularly for Black home buyers, who face a range of additional obstacles, and it threatens to widen the gap between Black and white homeownership to levels not seen since housing discrimination was made illegal five decades ago.
After declining for much of the past 20 years, the national Black homeownership rate has stayed near 42 percent from 2016 to 2019, the lowest since 1970, while the rate of white homeownership reached 73 percent, a record high, according to the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, a fair-lending advocacy group. In 2019, 58 percent of Asians and 47.5 percent of Latinos were homeowners. (Black homeownership peaked in 2004 at 49 percent, before the 2008 housing crisis.)
