The Pentagon released a long-anticipated plan outlining the steps the Obama administration will take to close the notorious Guantanamo Bay detention facility.
The document released Tuesday morning contained few surprises and failed to remedy conflicts between President Barack Obama’s aspirations to shut down Guantanamo during his final year in office and legal restrictions imposed by Republicans in Congress that prevent the president from sending any of the remaining detainees to the U.S. It was released not because of a breakthrough agreement between the White House and Congress but because of a deadline set by lawmakers for “the details of a comprehensive strategy” on how to detain current and future people captured as part of the broad-reaching war on terror.
Speaking from the White House, Obama reminded Americans that closing Guantanamo Bay was once a bipartisan goal, backed by former President George W. Bush.

U.S. fighter jets launched airstrikes against an ISIS compound in Libya overnight as they targeted a terrorist linked to tourist massacres in Tunisia, American military officials said.
Dozens of people were killed in the bombing raid on the coastal city of Sabratha, local officials and activists said. Warplanes struck a house 6 miles outside the city center, Sabratha’s municipal administration said.
A senior U.S. official told NBC News the airstrike likely killed Tunisian ISIS operative Noureddine Chouchane.

Using NASA’s Kepler space telescope, astronomers have witnessed an unprecedented event: a miniature celestial body getting ripped apart by the white dwarf star it orbits.
According to NASA, it confirms one of the more gruesome theories of the universe: that white dwarfs — small, dense stars that form when a star burns out or collapses — can “cannibalize” other planets still hanging around them.
“We are for the first time witnessing a miniature ‘planet’ ripped apart by intense gravity, being vaporized by starlight and raining rocky material onto its star,” said Andrew Vanderburg, graduate student at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and lead author of the paper published in Nature, according to the NASA press release.

Fire, brimstone and… tacky high-end luxury properties?
The New York Daily News fired a new salvo in its ongoing war of words with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, calling the real estate magnate “ANTI CHRIST” on its front page.
An image of Trump was also doctored to surround him with flames and to give him devilishly red and scaly skin.
The cover referred to this week’s spat between Trump and Pope Francis. The pontiff said Trump was “not Christian” because of his proposal to build a wall to keep out refugees.

Sandra Day O’Connor, the retired Supreme Court justice appointed by a Republican president, said on Wednesday that President Barack Obama should get to name the replacement for the late Justice Antonin Scalia.
O’Connor, in an interview with a Fox affiliate in Phoenix, disagreed with Republican arguments that the next president, and not Obama, should get to fill the high court vacancy.
“I think we need somebody there to do the job now and let’s get on with it,” said O’Connor, the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court.
O’Connor, 85, agreed it’s unusual for a Supreme Court vacancy to open in an election year, which “creates much talk around the thing that isn’t necessary.”

The 1980s pop star and model Denise Matthews, known by the stage name Vanity, died Monday at the age of 57. She battled years of kidney failure and a recent abdominal illness, according to TMZ.
Native to Canada, Matthews first found success as a model, but a fateful meeting at the American Music Awards in 1980 would help launch a singing career. Prince recruited the 21-year-old to become the lead singer of the R&B girl group Vanity 6, whose biggest hit was 1982’s “Nasty Girl.” Vanity 6 toured with Prince in ’82 and ’83, before splitting up. Vanity then released two solo albums via Motown Records, 1984’s “Wild Animal” and 1986’s “Skin on Skin.”
Vanity began work on a third solo album that did not come to fruition. She starred in the 1986 B-movie “Never Too Young to Die” and the 1988 action film “Action Jackson,” for which she contributed to the soundtrack. But as Vanity’s music career waned in the late ’80s, she developed a crack-cocaine addiction. As a result, she nearly overdosed in 1994 and suffered near-fatal kidney damage. Matthews then converted to Christianity, abandoned her stage name and became an evangelist.

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, the bench’s ideological conservative known for his fiery comments in and out of the courtroom, has died. He was 79.
Scalia was “a brilliant legal mind with a pugnacious style, incisive wit, and colorful opinions,” President Barack Obama said Saturday night. “He will no doubt be remembered as one of the most consequential judges and thinkers to serve on the Supreme Court.”
Scalia was found dead at a Texas ranch on Saturday morning when he did not appear for breakfast, the U.S. Marshals Service in Washington told The Associated Press.

A deal to establish a central unified government in Libya may be reached by early next week, paving the way for the country to ask the U.S. and other international powers to act against the so-called Islamic State’s presence there, according to a top official from the country hosting the Libyan peace talks.
Mbarka Bouaida, Morocco’s minister-delegate for foreign affairs, made the prediction in an exclusive interview this week with The Huffington Post.
“We try as much as we can, as far as we can as Moroccans, to make a deal between them to find a solution,” Bouaida said Wednesday. “We’re still optimistic on this point. We think we can find a good deal, and they can maybe by the end of this week or early next week, find a solution to fix their government.”

Facing off against Senator Bernie Sanders on Thursday night, Hillary Clinton did not comport herself like someone who had just suffered a landslide loss in New Hampshire. She did not raise her voice or express anger. She did not demonize Mr. Sanders or suggest he would be a dangerous choice for Democrats. She remained calm as he pungently sought to highlight their differences.
Instead, she behaved like someone heading into Nevada and South Carolina with every reason to be confident and little to fear but her own missteps.
A week after loudly confronting Mr. Sanders in a debate for perpetrating what she called a “very artful smear” against her, Mrs. Clinton took a far more strategic approach. She sought to portray her political approach as different from that of Mr. Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, but her tone was firm but not panicked. For much of the night, a viewer could have been forgiven for thinking that it was Mr. Sanders who was grappling with the way forward after being handed a 22-point loss two nights earlier — and Mrs. Clinton who was riding high.
