The treatment, called Kymriah, aims to give some patients a second chance after first-line drugs have failed. This may happen in up to a fifth of patients, according to the FDA.
.
Each dose of Kymriah contains a patient’s own immune cells, which are sent to a lab to be genetically modified using a virus. This therapy — known as chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy, or CAR-T — gives the cells the ability to recognize and kill the source of the cancer.

As she was getting on in years and her resources dwindled, Virginia Rayford took out a special kind of mortgage in 2008 that she hoped would help her stay in her three-bedroom Washington rowhouse for the rest of her life.
Rayford, 92, took advantage of a federally insured loan called a reverse mortgage that allows cash-strapped seniors to borrow against the equity in their houses that has built up over decades.
But the risks of the financial arrangement are stark — and today the frail widow finds herself facing foreclosure.

“Our whole city is underwater right now but we are coming!” Port Arthur Mayor Derrick Freeman posted Wednesday morning on Facebook. “If you called, we are coming. Please get to higher ground if you can, but please try (to) stay out of attics.”

The largest oil refinery in the country is shutting down as Hurricane Harvey causes more catastrophic flooding.
Early Wednesday, Motiva said it started closing its Port Arthur refinery “in response to increasing local flood conditions.” The plant won’t open until flood waters recede.
Motiva had been steadily reducing production at the plant for days. Late Tuesday it was running at only 40% capacity.
Harvey, which has been downgraded to a tropical storm, made a second landfall Wednesday near the Louisiana-Texas border. It is expected to bring winds of 30 to 40 mph and a 2- to 4-foot storm surge in the area.
Port Arthur is located along the border of both states. Mayor Derrick Freeman said on Facebook overnight that the “whole city is underwater right now.”

The subpoenas seeking documents and testimony were sent to Melissa Laurenza, an attorney with the Akin Gump law firm who until recently represented Manafort, and to Jason Maloni, who is Manafort’s spokesman, according to people familiar with the matter.
Manafort is under investigation for possible tax and financial crimes, according to US officials briefed on the investigation. The allegations under investigation largely center on Manafort’s work for the former ruling party in Ukraine, which was ousted amid street protests over its pro-Russian policies.

As soon as Jordy Bloodsworth saw the images of Texans wading through Hurricane Harvey’s gushing floodwaters, he borrowed his buddy’s brand new Chevy truck, hitched his 18-foot fishing boat to the back and took off from his home in Baton Rouge.
Bloodsworth was just 12 years old when Hurricane Katrina dumped 14 feet of water on his family’s home as the storm surged over the levee. They lost every photo, every cent.
What he gained, though, was a deep motivation to help his brethren in Texas during this week’s historic deluge.

It was nearing midnight at the Trump International Hotel, and the president’s son was eating macaroni and cheese.
Enveloped in the smooth tones of jazzy hotel music, soft light from a million tiny chandelier crystals and the scent of candied bacon, Eric Trump, fresh from a rally this month in West Virginia, declined a question from a reporter and instead posed one of his own.
“Is everything perfect?” he asked, much like an attentive concierge.
From the Trump family’s point of view, how could it not be?
In this first tumultuous summer of the Trump administration, the hotel has cemented its status as a gathering spot for prominent conservatives and a place for the president’s supporters to see, be seen and curry favor with people in power, one $24 chocolate cigar at a time. (The selfies are free.)
The hotel — a melting pot for Trump family members, Trump surrogates, tourists, YouTube celebrities, journalists and the occasional white nationalist — has earned that status in no small part because it is home to the only Washington restaurant that President Trump visits.

The Army has purchased an emerging technology for Abrams tanks, Bradleys and Strykers designed to give combat vehicles an opportunity identify, track and destroy approaching enemy rocket-propelled grenades in a matter of milliseconds, service officials said.
Called Active Protection Systems, or APS, the technology uses sensors and radar, computer processing, fire control technology and interceptors to find, target and knock down or intercept incoming enemy fire such as RPGs and Anti-Tank Guided Missiles, or ATGMs.
Systems of this kind have been in development for many years, however the rapid technological progress of enemy tank rounds, missiles and RPGs is leading the Army to more rapidly test and develop APS for its fleet of Abrams tanks.
DRS Technologies and Israeli-based Rafael Advanced Defense Systems are working with the U.S. Army to consider acquiring their recently combat-tested Trophy Active Protection System, a vehicle-mounted technology engineered to instantly locate and destroy incoming enemy fire.
The Army has purchased a number of Trophy APS systems and also Iron Fist systems designed by Israel Military Industries to evaluate their effectiveness, said Lt. Gen. John Murray, Deputy Chief of Staff, Army G-8.
“The one that is farthest along in terms of installing it is…Trophy on Abrams,” Murray said. “We’re getting some pretty…good results. It adds to the protection level of the tank.”
Iron Fist on the Bradley is also “moving along.”

The executive order “will ensure that you can get the lifesaving gear that you need to do your job and send a strong message that we will not allow criminal activity, violence, and lawlessness to become the new normal,” he said.
The Obama limitations hurt law enforcement, Sessions added.
“One sheriff told me earlier this year about how, due to the prior administration’s restrictions, the federal government made his department return an armored vehicle that can change the dynamics of an active shooter situation,” he said.
Jim Pasco, the police organization’s executive director, said the change “is President Trump making good on a campaign promise.” Pasco said he and other police officials discussed the issue with the president and attorney general two times during meetings at the White House.
