A painting by Amedeo Modigliani fetched $170.4 million at an auction Monday, setting a world record for the artist and achieving the second highest price ever garnered for a work of art at auction.
“Reclining Nude” was sold at Christie’s in Manhattan after a protracted bidding battle. Considered one of his best known works, the 1917-1918 painting nearly created a scandal when it was first exhibited in Paris. It depicts an unknown nude model reclining on a crimson couch and blue cushion.
The previous auction record for a Modigliani was $71 million.

There is so much rave over the artistic masters of the past like Michelangelo, Da Vinci and other masters over their masterpieces that we forget we are in a new age – this is not a knock against their generations because they are truly are the masters of their age, but let us not forget the new age or new generation of artists that could very well be the next masters. Especially nowadays when having a picture taken is just a click away, the appreciation for a hand-made portrait or any painting for that matter has dramatically decreased in a massive way, only the true fans of the art is left to bask in the glory of these amazing geniuses. These next masters are indeed from our age and will be our gift to the next age or generation, but that doesn’t mean only they can enjoy it, right? So let’s enjoy these beautiful masterpieces from these amazing artists!

Late comedian Joan Rivers had a reputation for being charitable, and her will, recently obtained by Page Six, upholds her generous character.
Of the estimated $150 million fortune Rivers left behind, she designated a portion of the funds to go to several nonprofit and non-governmental organizations: Guide Dogs for the Blind, God’s Love We Deliver, the Jewish Guild for the Blind, the Simon Wiesenthal Center, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Jewish Home and Hospital Foundation.
Melissa Rivers, the “Fashion Police” star’s only child, was named an executor of the estate. Other beneficiaries include the entertainer’s grandson Cooper, niece Caroline Waxler and nephew Andrew Waxler, and five members of Rivers’ staff.

If you’ve ever gazed into the beautiful void that is Gustav Courbet’s “The Origin of the World,” you’re probably familiar with just how provocative (and NSFW) the painting is.
As the title cleverly references, it is a portrait of the female genitalia, through which all human beings enter into life. Combining the romance of realism and the lustful voyeurism of erotic art, it’s, well, heavy stuff.
So, you can only imagine what would happen if someone — let’s say, a daring performance artist — attempted to reenact the racy anatomic still life from 1866… in front of an audience of museum patrons assembled at Paris’ Musée d’Orsay to see Courbet’s masterpiece face-to-face.
