A grand jury has indicted a former South Carolina police officer in the April shooting of an unarmed black man, the prosecutor announced on Monday.
Former North Charleston Police Officer Michael Slager, 33, has been charged with murder in the death of Walter Scott, 50.
“I think the people of the 9th circuit elected me to be accountable to them, and that’s what we intend to do,” Charleston County Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said during a news conference following the announcement of the indictment Monday. “They have to know they have someone prosecuting the case who is accountable to them.”

What should have been a trustworthy digital service has been compromised, in the latest sign that the U.S. government can’t be relied upon to keep the personal data of its citizens safe. On May 26, the Internal Revenue Service disclosed that sophisticated criminals had stolen tax information from 104,000 Americans via the IRS’ “Get Transcript” online service, which allows taxpayers to order copies of their own tax returns and other filings. The perpetrators, whom IRS officials believe were based in Russia and other countries, accessed the transcripts by using people’s personal information that had already been leaked elsewhere to answer the multiple-step authentication process the IRS had set up for the service.

3D printed prostheses have been coming to the aid of many children over the past couple of years. This can clearly be seen in the hundreds of 3D printed hands and arms which have changed the lives of children and adults around the world. As technology improves, 3D printing is also coming to the aid of individuals who are missing other body parts, making what was once impossible, suddenly possible.
One cute little two-year-old girl, named Tessa Evans, was born without a nose, and her parents Grainne and Nathan decided to do something about it now, rather than wait until she’s older. If they had waited, Tessa’s surgery not only would have been much more complicated and aggressive, but Tessa would have also had to have gone through her entire childhood and adolescence without being able to function entirely like a normal person. Tessa’s nose can not smell, nor does it have any sinuses, although she can still sneeze and even catch a cold. The disorder, referred to as arhinia, is extremely rare, so much so that there have only been 47 cases reported in medical history. It wasn’t until Tessa’s mother had her 20-week ultrasound that it was discovered that Tessa would be born with a missing nose.

FIFA, the international soccer governing body, could strip Russia and Qatar of their World Cup hosting rights if evidence comes to light there was corruption in the bidding process, a FIFA official said Sunday.
Domenico Scala, the chairman of FIFA’s audit and compliance committee, said that 2018 World Cup host Russia and 2022 World Cup host Qatar could be in trouble if allegations of bribery turn out to be true, Reuters reported.
“If evidence should emerge that the awards to Qatar and Russia only came about thanks to bought votes, then the awards could be invalidated,” Scala told the Swiss newspaper SonntagsZeitung Sunday. “This evidence has not yet been brought forth.”

Leading all the way, American Pharoah barreled down the stretch and on to victory at the 147th Belmont Stakes Saturday, becoming the first horse in 37 years to win the Triple Crown.
The champion 3-year-old horse seized the lead early and held off all comers in the eight-horse field, and sped away to an insurmountable lead as the crowd roared. American Pharoah covered the 1 1/2 mile distance in 2:26.65, besting the field by 5 1/2 lengths.
“Steady, steady, all the way around,” jubilant jockey Victor Espinoza said after the win. “I had the best feeling after when I took the first turn.

In a tribute to a beloved son and his grieving father, President Obama delivered a moving eulogy Saturday at the packed funeral for Beau Biden, the oldest child of Vice President Joe Biden.
“Like his father, Beau did not have a mean bone in his body,” Obama told the hundreds of mourners and dignitaries at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church in Wilmington, Delaware. “From his dad, he learned how to get back up when life got him down.”
Beau Biden died of brain cancer a week ago at age 46. Obama called him a “consummate public servant” and a “man of character,” adding that Beau always carried around a notebook so he could write down the problems his constituents voiced to him when the former Delaware attorney general ran into them outside of his office.

When the Obama administration approved strong new net neutrality rules earlier this year, advocates rejoiced. “We have won on net neutrality,” Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak told The Guardian. President Barack Obama declared victory and thanked Reddit, the self-proclaimed “Front Page of the Internet” for its community’s activism on the issue.
But these celebrations may have been premature. Telecom and cable companies, which provide broadband access to the vast majority of Americans, are challenging the Obama administration’s actions in court. If they get their way, a federal appeals court will soon delay some rules that aim to protect net neutrality, the principle that all internet traffic should be treated equally. Open-Internet advocates fear that an unfavorable decision may open the door for harmful business practices while the court battle—which could take years—plays out. A stay on part of the new rules would also likely embolden Republicans on Capitol Hill who seek to pass laws gutting the rules.

Using less than a drop of blood, a new test can reveal nearly every virus a person has ever been exposed to, scientists reported on Thursday.
The test, which is still experimental, can be performed for as little as $25 and could become an important research tool for tracking patterns of disease in various populations, helping scientists compare the old and the young, or people in different parts of the world.
It could also be used to try to find out whether viruses, or the body’s immune response to them, contribute to chronic diseases and cancer, the researchers said.

China-based hackers are suspected of breaking into the computer networks of the U.S. government personnel office and stealing identifying information of at least 4 million federal workers, American officials said Thursday.
The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that data from the Office of Personnel Management and the Interior Department had been compromised.
“The FBI is conducting an investigation to identify how and why this occurred,” the statement said.

Can an old brain learn new tricks?
The answer could soon be a resounding “yes.”
Scientists from the University of California at Irvine may have found a way to restore the youthful flexibility of the still-developing brain. In a study on mice recently published in the journal Neuron, the researchers were able to re-activate a younger neural state in an older brain.
