Chancellor Angela Merkel believes firmly in strong German – U.S. relations and is simply being honest with the United States when she flags up policy differences with Washington, her spokesman said on Monday.

Merkel sent shockwaves through Washington and London by saying on Sunday that Europe must take its fate into its own hands, implying that the United States under President Donald Trump and Britain after its Brexit vote were no longer reliable partners.

She made the comments after Trump criticized major NATO allies over their military spending and refused to endorse a global climate change accord at back-to-back summits last week.

Music legend Gregg Allman dies at 69

Gregg Allman, a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band who overcame family tragedy, drug addiction and health problems to become a grizzled elder statesman for the blues music he loved, has died. He was 69.

Allman died due to liver cancer complications at his home in Savannah, Georgia, and he was “surrounded by his family and friends,” Michael Lehman, Allman’s longtime manager and close friend, told CNN.

He will be buried at Rose Hill cemetery in Macon, Georgia, though a funeral date has not yet been set, Lehman said. Two other founding members of the Allman Brothers — guitarist Duane Allman and bassist Berry Oakley — are also buried at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Allman had been working on a yet-to-be-released solo album entitled “Southern Blood.” Lehman said Allman was very enthusiastic about the project and was listening to tracks from the album just last night. A release date for “Southern Blood” has not yet been announced.

A sheriff’s deputy and seven other people were shot dead overnight in southern Mississippi, authorities said Sunday.

Authorities identified Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputy William Durr, 36, as the slain officer according to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.

The MBI said the shootings started around 11:30 p.m. at an address in Bogue Chitto, where the deputy and three females were found dead.

.

Another crime scene was found in Brookhaven, where the bodies of two boys were found. There also was a third crime scene, where a man and a woman were found dead. The identities of the other victims are pending notification of next of kin.

John Boehner Says Trump’s Presidency Has Been Mostly A ‘Disaster’

Former House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) isn’t impressed with President Donald Trump.

Speaking at an energy conference in Houston on Wednesday, Boehner did praise Trump on foreign affairs and said he had stepped up the fight against the Islamic State militant group. But he generally gave a grim assessment of the president’s first few months in office, according to energy publication Rigzone.

“Everything else he’s done [in office] has been a complete disaster,” Boehner said. “He’s still learning how to be president.”

Boehner, who backed the businessman during the presidential campaign, criticized the Trump’s late-night tweets and said he hadn’t imagined him becoming commander-in-chief.

The former speaker, who retired from Congress in 2015, suggested investigations into Russian interference in the election were necessary, but said talk of impeaching Trump would only boost the president’s political support.

A federal appeals court upheld Thursday a ruling blocking President Donald Trump’s travel ban against six Muslim-majority countries.

The 10-3 ruling from the 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals upholds a lower court’s decision to halt core portions of the executive order indefinitely.

The Trump administration says it plans to appeal to the Supreme Court.

.

“This Department of Justice will continue to vigorously defend the power and duty of the Executive Branch to protect the people of this country from danger, and will seek review of this case in the United States Supreme Court,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement.

Republicans largely dismissed the results of a Congressional Budget Office report out Wednesday that said a House-passed health care bill would cause millions to lose insurance and potentially have the greatest impact on the least healthy Americans.

As House Republicans questioned the ability of the Congressional score-keepers, their fellow party members in the Senate vowed that their ideas to replace the Affordable Care Act would look nothing like the House bill assessed Wednesday.

Sen. Lamar Alexander, chairman of the Health Education and Labor Committee who is in part tasked with writing parts of the Senate’s bill, used the score as another reason to push the American Health Care Act aside.

Trump Budget Would Cut Safety Net Programs, Boost Defense Spending

President Donald Trump’s 2018 budget proposal includes sweeping cuts to social spending for low-income Americans, including entitlement programs that the president promised to protect as a candidate, while boosting defense spending.

White House budget director Mick Mulvaney briefed reporters on the blueprint Monday, which seeks to eliminate the deficit in 10 years while avoiding cuts to Medicare and Social Security retirement benefits. The full budget is scheduled to come out on Tuesday morning.

.“This is, I think, the first time in a long time the administration has written a budget through the eyes of the people paying the taxes,” Mulvaney told reporters.

It would accomplish its savings goals via deep cuts to other safety-net programs. At the same time, it assumes that the White House’s agenda of repealing Obamacare, reforming the tax code and investing in infrastructure will become law and unleash an economic boom that would further reduce deficits by $2 trillion over the next decade.

Love letters up for auction reveal the depth of the passionate relationship between Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and David Ormsby-Gore, a close friend of President John F. Kennedy’s whose marriage proposals she rejected.

Ormsby-Gore, the fifth Baron Harlech, served as the British ambassador to the United States during the Cuban Missile Crisis — an appointment that Kennedy personally requested for the friend he first met when his father, Joseph Kennedy, served as the U.S. ambassador to Great Britain from 1938 to 1940.

Several biographies of the Kennedys have discussed Ormsby-Gore’s proposals to Jacqueline Kennedy in the years after the president was assassinated in November 1963. But the newly discovered trove of correspondence gives fresh insight into the “many lives and deaths and hopes and pain” that the two shared, as Jacqueline Kennedy wrote on Nov. 13, 1968 — a month after her marriage to Aristotle Onassis, the billionaire Greek-Argentine shipping tycoon.

The Supreme Court struck down two congressional district maps in North Carolina Monday, holding that the state had engaged in an unconstitutional racial gerrymander.

The ruling is a victory for the black North Carolina voters who had argued the plans packed African-Americans in districts that already had a high percentage of African-Americans, thus diluting their presence in other districts.

.

As a result, the ruling sends the North Carolina legislature back to the drawing board — with significant potential implications for the 2018 midterm elections. The state has been nearly split along partisan lines in recent statewide elections — such as for governor and president — but Republicans control 10 US House seats compared to only three for Democrats.

.

“The Constitution entrusts states with the job of designing congressional districts,” Justice Elena Kagan wrote for the majority. “But it also imposes an important constraint: A state may not use race as the predominant factor in drawing district lines unless it has a compelling reason.”
