The Trump administration loosened Obama-era birth control requirements on Friday, saying most providers of health insurance could refuse to pay for an employee’s birth control if the provider shows “sincerely held” religious or moral objections.
The new regulations, which take effect immediately, protect groups such as the Little Sisters of the Poor from litigation if they refuse to provide contraceptive coverage, but widen the pool of those shielded to include nonprofits, for-profit companies, other nongovernmental employers, and schools and universities.
“These rules will not affect over 99.9 percent of the 165 million women in the United States,” the Health and Human Services Department said in a statement.

The inspiration for a popular but controversial accessory that allows semi-automatic rifles to fire like machine guns began with an itch.
Jeremiah Cottle had just recovered from a brain injury that cut short his Air Force career and was out shooting with a friend near his hometown in central Texas.
“We weren’t able to fire as fast as we wanted,” Cottle recalled in a 2011 interview with a local newspaper, The Albany News in Texas. “We couldn’t afford what we wanted ─ a fully automatic rifle ─ so I started to think about how I could make something that would work and be affordable.”

Some of the Russian ads appeared highly sophisticated in their targeting of key demographic groups in areas of the states that turned out to be pivotal, two of the sources said. The ads employed a series of divisive messages aimed at breaking through the clutter of campaign ads online, including promoting anti-Muslim messages, sources said.

It has been unclear until now exactly which regions of the country were targeted by the ads. And while one source said that a large number of ads appeared in areas of the country that were not heavily contested in the elections, some clearly were geared at swaying public opinion in the most heavily contested battlegrounds.

Britain is rushing to help more than 100,000 travelers get back to the country after it suffered its largest ever airline collapse.
“This is an unprecedented response to an unprecedented situation,” British Transport Minister Chris Grayling said Monday, describing the measures following the sudden bankruptcy of Monarch Airlines as “the country’s biggest ever peacetime repatriation.”
All Monarch flights to and from the U.K. have been canceled. That leaves roughly 110,000 Monarch customers — whom the airline was meant to fly back to the U.K. in the next two weeks — stuck overseas, according to the country’s Civil Aviation Authority.
The agency said it’s organizing replacement flights to bring the travelers home, describing the crisis as “the biggest ever U.K. airline failure.”

The worst mass shooting in modern American history was met with immediate calls for action on gun control Monday from some Democratic lawmakers.
Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut demanded that Congress “get off its ass and do something.”
“This must stop,” Murphy said. “It is positively infuriating that my colleagues in Congress are so afraid of the gun industry that they pretend there aren’t public policy responses to this epidemic.”
He added: “The thoughts and prayers of politicians are cruelly hollow if they are paired with continued legislative indifference. It’s time for Congress to get off its ass and do something.”

The next Republican revolution began last week on a bright blue bus parked at a nighttime rally in Montgomery, Ala., days before a firebrand GOP candidate won the state’s Senate primary.
But unlike previous Republican revolutionaries, the hard-line figures who stepped out to cheers did not want to yank the party to the right on age-old issues such as taxes or spending. They wanted to gut it and leave its establishment smashed.
Fury infused these insurgents’ raw remarks as did a common theme: The Republican Party has failed its voters, and a national cleansing is needed in the coming year, regardless of whether President Trump is on board.

At first, the Trump administration seemed to be doing all the right things to respond to the disaster in Puerto Rico.
As Hurricane Maria made landfall on Wednesday, Sept. 20, there was a frenzy of activity publicly and privately. The next day, President Trump called local officials on the island, issued an emergency declaration and pledged that all federal resources would be directed to help.
But then for four days after that — as storm-ravaged Puerto Rico struggled for food and water amid the darkness of power outages — Trump and his top aides effectively went dark themselves.
Trump jetted to New Jersey that Thursday night to spend a long weekend at his private golf club there, save for a quick trip to Alabama for a political rally. Neither Trump nor any of his senior White House aides said a word publicly about the unfolding crisis.

After the Category 4 hurricane slammed into Puerto Rico, many of the more than 3.4 million U.S. citizens in the territory were still without adequate food, water and fuel. Flights off the island were infrequent, communications were spotty and roads were clogged with debris.

President Trump on Saturday accused the mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico, of demonstrating “poor leadership” amid the deepening crisis on the island that was devastated by Hurricane Maria.
Trump launched his personal attack on Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz via a morning tweetstorm from his golf resort at Bedminster, N.J., where he is spending the weekend. Cruz on Friday had criticized the Trump administration’s response to the hurricane, saying, “I am begging, begging anyone who can hear us to save us from dying.”
In a series of tweets, Trump suggested that the mayor was being manipulated by Democrats to “be nasty to Trump,” and he called on Cruz to have her local officials do more to help the recovery.

President Donald Trump’s tax plan could put $757 million in his own pocket over the likely 10-year lifetime of the proposal, just from the reduction in taxes on so-called “small businesses.”
The vast majority of Trump’s income in the past year came from “limited liability companies” he owns, which are exactly the sort of businesses that would see their maximum tax rate fall from 39.6 percent currently to 25 percent.
“This will be the lowest top marginal income tax rate for small- and medium-sized businesses in more than 80 years,” Trump said Friday at the National Association of Manufacturers. “And it will be rocket fuel for our economy.”
Whether that rate cut would actually fuel economic growth is not clear. What is clear, though, is the scale of the tax savings that would personally benefit Trump: $75.7 million per year, based on a HuffPost analysis of the president’s most recent financial disclosure.
