Hurricane Dorian, one of the most powerful Atlantic storms on record, hung over the Bahamas on Monday, thrashing the archipelago with high winds and surging seawater that flooded neighborhoods, submerged vehicles and shredded homes. The storm has left at least five people dead, officials said.
With the storm expected to churn a menacing path toward the United States, forecasters warned that it could inflict serious damage from Florida to southeastern Virginia and possibly beyond. Forecasters moved the storm’s much-watched “cone of uncertainty” slightly eastward on Monday, but they emphasized that even a minor change could bring the storm onto the American coast.
The island of Grand Bahama was subjected to a particularly brutal pummeling as the hurricane came to a near-standstill for most of the day, spewing sustained winds as high as 180 miles per hour.

A west Texas man, on a “downward spiral,” made “rambling” calls to police and the FBI before embarking on a shooting spree that took the lives of seven innocent bystanders, authorities said Monday.
The killer, 36-year-old Seth Ator, had been fired by his employer, Journey Oil Field Services, on Saturday before he went on his bloody rampage in the neighboring cities of Odessa and Midland, Texas.
“Right after that firing he called 911 … and so did his employer,” Odessa police chief Michael Gerke told reporters. “And basically they were complaining at each other because they had a disagreement over that firing.”
He left his trucking business employer’s office before police showed up.

Noah Syndergaard had far too much time to dwell on allowing 10 runs in his last start. One thought, in particular, continued to surface.
“I wanted to make sure that never happened again,” the New York Mets right-hander said.
There was never a hint it would Monday as Syndergaard pitched seven shutout innings and struck out 10 while the Mets handled the Washington Nationals 7-3.
Jeff McNeil hit a two-run homer for New York, which played a holiday afternoon game about 15 hours after falling at Philadelphia on Sunday night. The Mets remained four games behind the Chicago Cubs for the NL’s second wild-card spot.

Lakes formed the life-giving center of many of Guatemala’s indigenous cultures. Mayan villages sprang up along the shores of Lake Atitlán and Lake Petén Itzá, and many have remained to this day. Lake Petén Itzá and Lake Izabal are two of the largest lakes in Guatemala. Lake Atitlán is one of the deepest lakes in Central America, and is famed far and wide for its intense beauty. Visit these lakes to hike around their legendary waters, and take a closer look at the traditional villages nearby. Take a moment to gaze across their placid surfaces at the mountains, jungles, and volcanoes that shape the scenery of Guatemala.

Billionaire Warren Buffett, the chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, is in his late eighties and still capturing the world’s attention as the second richest person on the planet (as of this writing).
So, how has he done it? Actually, it’s not so much about what he has done as it is what he hasn’t done. With all the demands on him every day, Buffett learned a long time ago that the greatest commodity of all is time. He simply mastered the art and practice of setting boundaries for himself.
