UCL Professor attempts to shed light on the mystery of why humans cry Tears were used to communicate as well as their bio-mechanical function
-
Other animals shed tears, but none appear to cry because of emotion
The uniquely human phenomenon of crying when we are overcome by emotion developed as a means to communicate our feelings before the emergence of language, an influential scientists claims.
Michael Trimble, a professor of neurology, suggests that there must have been a time in our evolution when tears took on a meaning beyond their simple bio-mechanical function – keeping the eyeballs moist.

A white whale which learnt to imitate the voices of humans may have been trying to make contact, scientists believe.
The male named Noc had a distinctly human-like voice, much to the surprise of scientists who previously thought whales typically produce sounds in a manner that is wholly different from humans.

A new species of monkey with a distinctive blue rear end has been identified in Africa, researchers have said. The species, known locally as the lesula, was discovered after a young female was seen kept captive at the home of a primary school director in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2007.
The young animal resembled an owl faced monkey (Cercopithecus hamlyni) but the colour of its rear end was different to that of any known species, the researchers writing in the journal PLoS ONE said.

The days of human lifeguards watching over us on the beach are numbered. Or at least they will be if the Japanese have got anything to do with it.
Researchers at the Tokyo Institute of Technology have unveiled a new robot modelled on Olympic athletes that could be the lifeguard of the future.

At first glance, the center of the Milky Way seems like a very inhospitable place to try to form a planet.
Stars crowd each other, supernova explosions blast out shock waves, and powerful gravitational forces from a supermassive black hole twist and warp the fabric of space itself.
