Stories of bravery have started to surface amid the terrible tragedy that left 10 dead and nine more injured at an Oregon community college.

Students in Roseburg were starting their fourth day of classes at Umpqua Community College when shots rang out Thursday. The gunman has been identified as 26-year-old Chris Mercer.

Among those seriously injured was 30-year-old North Carolinian Chris Mintz, who relatives say confronted the shooter before being shot at least five times.

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee (R) weighed in on the massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. on Friday, saying the crime was no surprise because we have “systematically removed God” from public schools.

“We ask why there is violence in our schools, but we have systematically removed God from our schools,” Huckabee said on Fox News. “Should we be so surprised that schools would become a place of carnage?”

This line of reasoning isn’t new for Huckabee.

OAKLAND, Calif. — One Goh’s life was on the skids even before he became the suspect in the nation’s biggest mass school shooting since Virginia Tech.

He was chased by creditors. He grieved the death of his brother. In January, he was expelled from Oikos University, a small Christian school where he studied nursing. And, police say, he was angry.
