It’s a tough call, whose needs are more important: the terminal patient or the people they leave behind.
I’m a big fan of Nora Ephron. I didn’t know her personally, but I often felt like she knew me. So much of what she wrote felt like something I could have said … if I was as witty and wise and as good with words as she was.
I love just about everything she said and wrote, but one of my favorite favorites is the chapter “On Maintenance,” from her book “I Feel Bad About My Neck,” where she writes about the increasing amount of time a woman has to spend on maintaining her looks as she ages. She calls it “Status Quo Maintenance” — what you do just to stay more or less even: the routine, everyday things required just to keep you from looking like someone who no longer cares.
Lots of women instantly identify with this, but most of us can’t express it quite so well. Nora died last June, and I miss her humor and spot-on assessments of human behavior. Yet she remains someone I’m completely fascinated with. She died of pneumonia, brought on by acute myeloid leukemia, something she fiercely fought for more than five years.

A former pub landlord from West Yorkshire has become the first person in the UK to have a hand transplant.
Mark Cahill, who is 51, had been unable to use his right hand after it was affected by gout.
Doctors say he is making good progress after an eight-hour operation at Leeds General Infirmary.
It is still very early to assess how much control of the hand will be gained – so far he can wiggle his fingers, but has no sense of touch.

Mark Cahill, right, can wiggle the fingers on his new hand

Before 2008, everything I did had something to do with mental health. I’m a neuroscientist, and I was all about understanding how we create our perception of reality, and understanding what’s going on in the brains of people who experience hallucination and delusion.
But then I gave a TEDTalk about my own experience with stroke. Within weeks of delivering that talk in 2008, my life changed and the repercussions still resonate loudly in my world. My book, My Stroke of Insight, has been translated into 30 languages. Time and Oprah’s Soul Series came calling.

There is so much to like about Sir Ken Robinson’s TEDTalk — Do Schools Kill Creativity? — that I hardly know where to start. That said, here is a single sentence from his TEDTalk that deserves affirmation and discussion:
“We think visually, we think in sound, we think kinesthetically,” Sir Ken points out while discussing different types of intelligence.

Watch Salman Khan discuss the reinvention of education through video, then read a follow-up post by YouTube Education’s Angela Lin below.
Growing up, my mother always told me: “You’ll learn more from a journey of 10,000 miles than from reading 10,000 books.” For years I thought it was a saying she had invented, a justification for taking me out of school for weeks at a time to satisfy her love of travel. I later realized she was quoting an old Chinese proverb that summed up the importance of gaining firsthand experience when learning about new ideas, new people and new cultures.
