Low-cost 3D-printed prosthetics, such as the e-Nable open-source prosthetic hand, are doing wonderful things for amputees. Over time, more groups are attempting their own designs, advancing the technology while keeping costs low.
Open Bionics from Bristol, England, and its Dextrus design, originally funded on Indiegogo, is so streamlined it has just won the James Dyson Award in the UK, putting it in the international final for the student design competition.
Compared to other 3D-printed prosthetics available, the Dextrus hand has been designed to look much more like a human hand, with smoothed and rounded contours, and design elements such as knuckles.

A Colorado man can now control two prosthetic arms with his mind.
Les Baugh lost both his arms in an electrical accident 40 years ago. But with the help Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory and DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), he’s able to control a set of Modular Prosthetic Limbs with his nerves. All he has to do is think about moving his arms, and they move.
Nothing is permanently attached to him; Baugh wears what is called a “socket,” which connects the prosthetics to his body. The researchers measured the way his muscles and nerves react when Baugh thinks about moving his arms. Then, when he thinks about moving his arms and hands in a certain way, the prosthetics move.

A recent New York Magazine infographic brought to light the impressive evolution of prosthetics, which as of April includes vaginas.
The piece documents advancements in regenerative medicine over the years. During an interview Wednesday, the author Matthew Giles explained to HuffPost Live’s Ricky Camilleri how exactly these artificial vaginas are created.
“You’re taking cells from external genitalia and you’re creating … this scaffolding that you place the cells on, and then you implant it to actually create the cavity, and the body takes to it,” Giles said. “Two of the four women that have undergone this procedure at Wake Forest [University] were able to menstruate.”
