On Tuesday, Nintendo emailed me, saying that it was celebrating Women’s History Month. How? By putting some of its female characters on Rosie the Riveter-style posters. It’s a cute idea, but there’s a big issue: Nintendo doesn’t really have many powerful or playable female characters.
“Paving the way for diverse and interesting female protagonists in video games, Nintendo has picked a few of their popular leading ladies that merit this recognition for the month that honors outstanding women,” the email reads. Those “diverse and interesting female protagonists” include a pink version of a toadstool and a pink version of a bomb, called Toadette and Bombette.
Here’s the full list of female characters that Nintendo intends on celebrating for Women’s History Month: Tetra from “The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD,” Toadette from the Mario series, Bayonetta from “Bayonetta,” Rosalina from the Mario series, Lucina from “Fire Emblem,” Samus Aran from “Metroid” and Bombette from “Paper Mario.” Have you heard of most of these characters? Didn’t think so.

This is interesting — maybe a little nuts, but interesting nonetheless: Rakuten, which owns Play.com, the U.K.-based online purveyor of games, clothes, movies and more, is saying it expects the Wii U to outsell the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this holiday.
Well, maybe: MCV, which reported as much under the rubric “Play.com predicts Wii U dominance this Christmas,” may be misinterpreting what it itself cites the Japanese e-commerce and Internet company as saying, which is this: “The company predicts that Wii U and iPad will be more popular than Xbox One and PS4 amongst children this Christmas.”
Popular with children, mind you. Rakutin reportedly went on to cite a Twitter analysis, in which it says the Wii U and iPad were “the most talked about presents for children this Christmas.”
Children are an important demographic — one Nintendo’s appealed to for decades. You could argue, with actual numbers buttressing your argument, that Nintendo’s been the dominant games seller to children since pretty much the original Nintendo Entertainment System. But what are you arguing? Certainly not dominance.

Earlier today, Nintendo announced that several of the original Wii’s online services will fade to black in the console’s homeland. Adding to the carnage, the company confirmed that us yankees are far from exempt. Starting on June 28th, the Forecast Channel, News Channel, Everybody Votes Channel, the Check Mii Out Channel and the Nintendo Channel will all be taken offline. Wii Message Board and data exchange between friends are scheduled to get the axe as well.
