The Trump administration loosened Obama-era birth control requirements on Friday, saying most providers of health insurance could refuse to pay for an employee’s birth control if the provider shows “sincerely held” religious or moral objections.
The new regulations, which take effect immediately, protect groups such as the Little Sisters of the Poor from litigation if they refuse to provide contraceptive coverage, but widen the pool of those shielded to include nonprofits, for-profit companies, other nongovernmental employers, and schools and universities.
“These rules will not affect over 99.9 percent of the 165 million women in the United States,” the Health and Human Services Department said in a statement.

The inspiration for a popular but controversial accessory that allows semi-automatic rifles to fire like machine guns began with an itch.
Jeremiah Cottle had just recovered from a brain injury that cut short his Air Force career and was out shooting with a friend near his hometown in central Texas.
“We weren’t able to fire as fast as we wanted,” Cottle recalled in a 2011 interview with a local newspaper, The Albany News in Texas. “We couldn’t afford what we wanted ─ a fully automatic rifle ─ so I started to think about how I could make something that would work and be affordable.”

The worst mass shooting in modern American history was met with immediate calls for action on gun control Monday from some Democratic lawmakers.
Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut demanded that Congress “get off its ass and do something.”
“This must stop,” Murphy said. “It is positively infuriating that my colleagues in Congress are so afraid of the gun industry that they pretend there aren’t public policy responses to this epidemic.”
He added: “The thoughts and prayers of politicians are cruelly hollow if they are paired with continued legislative indifference. It’s time for Congress to get off its ass and do something.”

The three eagles have landed ― in a golf course in Jersey City. Former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton attended the Presidents Cup Thursday in an extra special opening ceremony.
Since the golf tournament began in 1994, this is the first time three U.S. presidents have attended the matches together, according to the Associated Press.
The crowds packed into the grandstands weren’t the only ones excited about the visitors. Even the ever steady pro golfers were eager for the chance to see the trio. Phil Mickelson caught them early and ensured he was the first golfer to get a presidential selfie.

Record-setting Emmy winner and “Veep” star Julia Louis-Dreyfus has breast cancer.
The actress revealed the diagnosis Thursday in a tweet sent to her approximately 748,000 followers. The post also included her thoughts on health care access.
“1 in 8 women get breast cancer. Today, I’m the one,” her post read. “The good news is that I have the most glorious group of supportive and caring family and friends, and fantastic insurance through my union. The bad news is that not all women are so lucky, so let’s fight all cancers and make universal health care a reality.”

If wind power is going to displace inexpensive fossil fuels, wind turbines need to get bigger — much bigger.
When it comes to building things, Eric Loth has his head in the clouds. This engineering professor at the University of Virginia wants to construct a wind turbine standing more than five times higher than the Statue of Liberty, with rotor blades longer than the Washington Monument is tall.
Not only that, the 1,650-foot-high mega-turbine would change along with the weather, bending its blades gracefully to cope with hurricane-strength winds. And all of this would happen dozens of miles out at sea.
Typical wind turbines are about 80 meters, or 260 feet, in height. Why build one so big?

After breaking free from Antarctica this summer, a giant iceberg roughly the size of Delaware is moving on to open waters.
New satellite images from TerraSAR-X show the iceberg known as A68 has begun to drift away from the Larsen C ice shelf and is being driven by currents, potentially toward the South Atlantic.
The iceberg— weighing an estimated 1.12 trillion tons — officially ripped from the frozen formation in July in a process known as calving, according to scientists at the University of Swansea in Britain. It’s such a colossal chunk of ice that maps of the peninsula must be redrawn.

Strange, swirling patterns have been found in more than 100 locations on the lunar surface.
A novel mission concept from NASA would lower a small satellite toward the surface of the moon on a 112-mile-long (180 kilometers) tether. One of the mission’s goals would be to uncover the cause of strange, swirling patterns found in more than 100 locations on the lunar surface.
In May, NASA announced that it would invest funds in 10 mission concepts involving small satellites called cubesats. Recently, the agency released more details about one of those concepts — the Bi-sat Observations of the Lunar Atmosphere above Swirls (BOLAS) mission concept.

President Hassan Rouhani of Iran said Tuesday that if President Donald Trump backs out of the 2015 nuclear deal, “no one will trust America again” and his country could then resume work on expanding its nuclear capabilities.
Rouhani raised that possibility in an interview with NBC News just before Trump spoke for the first time as president before the United Nations General Assembly, where he called Tehran a “murderous regime” and the nuclear deal “an embarrassment to the United States.”
Under the framework agreement between Iran and six world powers — the U.S., the U.K., France, China, Germany and Russia — Tehran agreed to curb its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of some economic sanctions.
Trump and his top diplomats have threatened to withdraw from the deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, saying Iran has violated it in spirit, if not in letter.

A powerful earthquake rocked Mexico on Tuesday, killing at least 120 people and toppling buildings — less than two weeks after a magnitude-8.1 quake hit the country and left nearly 100 dead.
The quake struck central Mexico at about 2:15 p.m. ET and had a magnitude of 7.1, the United States Geological Survey said. Its epicenter was in the state of Puebla, about 80 miles southeast of the capital, Mexico City.
Mexico City’s mayor told the AP that at least 30 are dead in the capital alone. Officials in Morelos state south of Mexico City said there were at least 55 deaths in the state.
At least 26 others died in Puebla state, state disaster prevention chief Carlos Valdes said, according to the AP.
And at least nine others were killed in Mexico State, Gov. Alfredo del Mazo said in a post on Twitter.
