The blasts hit a peace rally by leftists and Kurdish activists.
Two bomb explosions targeted a peace rally Saturday by leftist and Kurdish activists in the Turkish capital of Ankara, killing 86 people and wounding 186, the country’s health minister said.
The explosions occurred seconds apart outside Ankara’s main train station as hundreds were gathering for the rally, organized by Turkey’s public sector workers’ union and other civic society groups. The rally aimed to call for increased democracy and an end to the renewed violence between Kurdish rebels and Turkish security forces.
“I tried to help but everyone was in pieces,” Ismet, a 56-year-old Turkish animator who survived the attack with his wife and child, told The WorldPost at the scene, still covered in the blood of other people.

Because saying, “Guns don’t kill people. People kill people,” isn’t good enough.
President Barack Obama’s address to the nation on Thursday, hours after a gunman rampaged through a community college in Roseburg, Oregon, was the 15th time he has delivered remarks about a mass shooting during his presidency. Noting that the previous 14 killing sprees had failed to stir Congress to tighten gun laws, he took a more aggressive tone this time.
“This is a political choice that we make to allow this to happen every few months in America,” said Obama. “We collectively are answerable to those families who lose their loved ones because of our inaction.”
The president went on to compare the nation’s response to gun violence with how we react to other kinds of tragedies.

This is the second school shooting in the U.S. this month.
A shooter opened fire early Friday at Northern Arizona University’s Flagstaff campus, killing one person and injuring three others, the school and police said.
Police identified the shooter as 18-year old freshman Steven Jones. The school’s police chief, Greg Fowler, said that Jones shot four male students around 1:20 a.m. after an altercation in a parking lot near the Mountain View Hall, a building that houses most of the university’s 23 fraternities and sororities. The Delta Chi fraternity confirmed that some of its members were involved in the attack.
The deceased student, whom the university identified as Colin Brough, was also a freshman, Fowler said. The wounded — Nicholas Prato, Kyle Zientek and Nicholas Piring — are being treated at Flagstaff Medical Center, the university said.

It’ll be a while before all-in-one virtual reality headsets hit the shelves — the Oculus Rift system and HTC’s Vive won’t arrive until next year — but in the meantime, you can have a more DIY experience with Samsung’s latest Gear VR and a recent Galaxy S smartphone.
Any recent Samsung flagship phone (Galaxy S6, Edge, Edge+, or Note5) serves as the screen in the headset, which appeared in a more expensive, limited fashion earlier this year. Lenses inside separate the on-screen images so they go to the correct eye and produce the 3-D effect.
Head tracking and other functions are also handled by the phone, making the headset somewhat less of a dedicated solution than the complex systems used by HTC and Oculus. You’ll need to provide your own headphones as well. But with a price tag of $99 and expected to ship this November, Gear VR, unveiled Thursday, will be one of the easiest ways to access virtual reality content out there.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) summed up the feelings of his soon-to-be-former colleagues in one line: “Well, that was a surprise.”
He then moved to adjourn the meeting that had been called to elect a new speaker, a vote that was presumed to be a lock for House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). Instead, McCarthy had used his time before the GOP conference to say he was withdrawing his name.
“He asked for the floor, and it was a two-minute speech,” said Rep. Robert Pittenger (R-N.C.). “He said the country is asking for a new face, new leadership, and he said I’m going to pull out. I’m not the right person for this job. I think we’re all in shock.”

Less than 10 percent of the world’s population will be living in extreme poverty by the end of 2015, the World Bank forecast on Sunday.
The Washington-based institution’s latest projections expect the number of people who survive on $1.90 a day to drop from 12.8 percent of the human population in 2012 to 9.6 percent this year. That means 702 million people still struggle to survive.
But that’s a stunning decline from the numbers reported over the last 25 years. According to the World Bank, 37.1 percent of the world’s population lived in extreme poverty in 1990. In 2015, that number is estimated to drop to 9.6 percent.

The search for survivors from the sinking of the El Faro cargo ship will be called off at sunset Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard has confirmed.
USCG Captain Mark Fedor told reporters Wednesday afternoon that it was highly unlikely anybody could have survived six days at sea after abandoning ship in midst of a Category 4 hurricane.
“The decision to end a search is painful, but it is based on the art and science of rescue [operations],” Fedor said, adding that a person could only survive for 4-5 days at sea even in favorable conditions.

In 2012, Sandy Jauregui-Baza was hiking along the Tamul waterfall in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, when she started coughing and having trouble breathing. “I remember thinking I must be coming down with something,” she recalls.
Jauregui-Baza was an avid exerciser; she ran or hiked daily, logging more than 100 miles each month. She ate clean, avoiding almost all processed foods. She figured she was too healthy for anything to be seriously wrong. But after developing flu-like symptoms, she went to an urgent care clinic in Los Angeles. The doctor thought it might be tuberculosis, based on the results of her cloudy chest X-ray and her recent honeymoon in Nepal, where the infectious disease is common. But a few days later, when the definitive test for TB came back negative, doctors did a lung biopsy to look for other causes.
The final diagnosis: Jauregui-Baza had stage IV lung cancer, the most advanced form of the disease; it had spread into the bones of her spinal column. “I thought the doctors had to be kidding,” says Jauregui-Baza, now 32. “I’ve never even smoked, and I had just hiked to the base camp of Mount Everest. How could I have lung cancer?” The prognosis was grim: More than 95 percent of stage IV lung cancer patients succumb to the disease within five years of diagnosis. Jauregui-Baza was given just six months to live.

A top U.S. commander said Tuesday that the bombing of a Doctors Without Borders hospital in northern Afghanistan was accidental — but the humanitarian group, also known as Médecins Sans Frontières, claims otherwise.
The hospital, the only one of its kind in the region, was “deliberately bombed,” according to a statement released Tuesday by Dr. Joanne Liu, MSF’s international president. “The attack was unacceptable.”
The explosion rocked the northeastern Afghan city of Kunduz in the middle of the night, killing 22. This was the 12th U.S. airstrike in the area in a five-day period. The hospital was hit several times, causing some patients to be burned alive.

Before the dinosaur age, the coelacanth — a hefty, mysterious fish that now breathes with its gills — sported a well-developed lung, a new study finds.
This lung likely helped the fish survive in low-oxygen, shallow waters hundreds of millions of years ago, the researchers said. During the Mesozoic era, more commonly known as the dinosaur age, it’s likely that some species of coelacanth (see-leh-kanth) moved to deeper waters, stopped using their lungs and began relying exclusively on their gills to breathe, the researchers said.
This adaptation to deep water likely helped coelacanths survive the asteroid that slammed into ancient Earth and killed the nonavian dinosaurs, the researchers said. The fish’s gill- and lung-breathing relatives were not as lucky; during the Late Cretaceous period, about 66 million years ago, coelacanths living in shallow waters disappear from the fossil record, they said.
