The call came through Officer Geoffrey Freeman’s radio a few minutes before 10 a.m. on Feb. 8.
“Complaint that somebody jumped a fence and tried to chase a neighbor,” the police dispatcher in Austin, Texas, said. “Black male, tall, thin, wearing jeans, boxers.”
The dispatcher left Freeman with a final detail.
“No weapons,” she can be heard saying just before the call, later released to the public, cuts out.
Freeman headed toward the disturbance, which was taking place in a pocket of suburbia a couple of miles north of the University of Texas at Austin campus.

Thanks to the efforts of everyone from student activists to Vice President Joe Biden, people are slowly starting to acknowledge that rape on college campuses is an enormous problem. At Brigham Young University, however, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Students at the university claim they’ve been investigated — and, in some cases, disciplined — for violating the school’s code of conduct after filing reports of sexual assault, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
In interviews with Mic and the Salt Lake Tribune, students have said the school’s associate dean of students and Title IX coordinator, Sarah Westerberg, refers all reports of rape to BYU’s Honor Code office, which enforces campus-wide behavioral standards set by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. According to student reports, the Honor Code office has allegedly taken punitive action against rape victims for breaking school rules, effectively blaming them for “causing” their own assaults by violating the code of conduct.

Illinois State Trooper Douglas Balder sat in his squad car, its red and blue lights strobing into the frozen night of Jan. 27, 2014. He was about to be set on fire.
Balder had stopped to assist a Chicago-bound big rig that had stalled out in the rightmost lane of the Ronald Reagan Memorial Tollway. A heavy-duty tow truck and a bright yellow Tollway assistance vehicle were also pulled over, attending to the stranded semi.
Balder, a Navy reservist and father of two, had his heater cranked against minus-30-degree wind chill. He had positioned his 2011 Crown Victoria behind the Tollway vehicle and switched on his flashers. There were also flares sputtering on the pavement, and the Tollway truck was flashing a large blinking arrow and its amber hazard lights. Visibility on that clear, cold night was excellent — around 10 miles.

The Geniuses at MIT Created a Wi-Fi That’s So High-Tech It Doesn’t Need a Password

Last week I went to a cafe to work. When I asked the waitress for the wireless password, she couldn’t remember it. I watched as she went back to the counter and shuffled through some sticky notes until she landed on the right one. After a few minutes, she came back over and recited it to me. It then took me several tries to get the right combination of lower and uppercase letters in order to give me entry to the restaurant’s wireless network. It was an unnecessarily painful process, as it often is when connecting to Wi-Fi in a new place.
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology want to change how we connect to Wi-Fi. To avoid the cumbersome network login process, a team has come up with a way to grant computers access to a Wi-Fi network based on their proximity to a router.
Applied practically, that means you could walk into a cafe and your device would automatically connect to a network — no annoying password necessary. The same could be true for a home network. When your friends come over, they could immediately be granted access to your Wi-Fi.

Ecuador’s earthquake death toll rose to 350 on Monday as rescuers hunted for survivors, victims clamored for aid and looting broke out in the Andean nation’s shattered coastal region.
More than 2,000 were also injured in Saturday’s 7.8 magnitude quake, which ripped apart buildings and roads and knocked out power along the Pacific coastline.
President Rafael Correa, giving the new tally of fatalities from the town of Portoviejo inside the disaster zone, told Reuters the number of dead had increased to 350 but said he feared the number would rise further.
“Reconstruction will cost billions of dollars,” said Correa, as survivors begged him for water.

A flurry of aftershocks hit southwestern Japan on Saturday as rescuers scrambled to reach trapped survivors of two big quakes that killed at least 35 people. About 190 suffered serious injuries, according to the government.
Evacuation orders were issued for areas vulnerable to landslides amid powerful thunderstorms in the area, the government’s main spokesman Yoshihide Suga said in an evening press briefing.
“There are still sporadic aftershocks from this morning’s earthquake, and so there is still a need to be vigilant,” Suga warned.

It’s Jackie Robinson Day, but Baseball Still Has a Problem With Black People

On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson made his debut in Major League Baseball, becoming the first black player to cross the game’s deeply entrenched color line. But nearly seven decades after Robinson made history, there’s at least one position in America’s favorite past time that’s struggling to integrate: pitching.
Out of 449 pitchers on major league rosters this year on opening day, only 14 are black.
“The cruel reality is that the African-American baseball player — whether prodded to abandon pitching or by their own volition — is being excluded from more than half the jobs in the industry.” — John Nightengale
Pitching is arguably the game’s most important position, but black players are less represented there than they are at other positions on the field. The game does boast some high-profile black pitchers, including C.C. Sabathia of the New York Yankees and Marcus Stroman of the Toronto Blue Jays. tangie

The new Gilded Age: Close to half of all super-PAC money comes from 50 donors

A small core of super-rich individuals is responsible for the record sums cascading into the coffers of super PACs for the 2016 elections, a dynamic that harks back to the financing of presidential campaigns in the Gilded Age.
Close to half the money — 41 percent — raised by the groups by the end of February came from just 50 mega-donors and their relatives, according to a Washington Post analysis of federal campaign finance reports. Thirty-six of those are Republican supporters who have invested millions in trying to shape the GOP nomination contest — accounting for more than 70 percent of the money from the top 50.
In all, donors this cycle have given more than $607 million to 2,300 super PACs, which can accept unlimited contributions from individuals and corporations. That means super PAC money is on track to surpass the $828 million that the Center for Responsive Politics found was raised by such groups for the 2012 elections.

Ian Burkhart is paralyzed from the chest down. But he can pick up a credit card and swipe it. He can pick up a bottle and pour. And he can do it all just by thinking about it.
It’s the latest advance in efforts to help restore movement to people who are paralyzed. In Burkhart’s case, a small brain implant picks up his thoughts and transmits them to a computer, which then sends signals to a sleeve that twitches his hand into action.
“I just think about what I want to do and now I can do it,” said Burkhart, 24.
It’s not seamless. Burkhart is plugged in – a large plug at the top of his skull, and wires attached to the sleeve that stimulates his arm, wrist and finger muscles.
