Amazon.com Inc has won approval from U.S. federal regulators to test a delivery drone outdoors, as the e-commerce company pursues its goal of sending packages to customers by air, even as it faces public concern about safety and privacy.
The Federal Aviation Administration said on Thursday it issued an experimental airworthiness certificate to an Amazon business unit and its prototype drone, allowing test flights over private, rural land in Washington state.
The FAA also granted Amazon an exemption from other flight restrictions so the experimental drone can conduct those flights.

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R) said Tuesday he will back an amendment to the state’s new “religious freedom” law clarifying that it does not allow businesses to deny service to anyone, and insisted that he never intended to discriminate against members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
“That is so offensive to me as a Hoosier,” Pence said during a press conference in Indianapolis, casting himself, the GOP-controlled General Assembly and the new Religious Freedom Restoration Act as victims of “mischaracterizations” perpetrated by the media and the law’s opponents.
“I don’t believe for a minute that it was the intention of the General Assembly to create a license to discriminate, or a right to deny services to gays, lesbians or anyone else in this state. And it certainly wasn’t my intent,” he added. “But I can appreciate that that’s become the impression — not just here in Indiana, but all across this country. And we need to confront that.”

On Tuesday, Nintendo emailed me, saying that it was celebrating Women’s History Month. How? By putting some of its female characters on Rosie the Riveter-style posters. It’s a cute idea, but there’s a big issue: Nintendo doesn’t really have many powerful or playable female characters.
“Paving the way for diverse and interesting female protagonists in video games, Nintendo has picked a few of their popular leading ladies that merit this recognition for the month that honors outstanding women,” the email reads. Those “diverse and interesting female protagonists” include a pink version of a toadstool and a pink version of a bomb, called Toadette and Bombette.
Here’s the full list of female characters that Nintendo intends on celebrating for Women’s History Month: Tetra from “The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD,” Toadette from the Mario series, Bayonetta from “Bayonetta,” Rosalina from the Mario series, Lucina from “Fire Emblem,” Samus Aran from “Metroid” and Bombette from “Paper Mario.” Have you heard of most of these characters? Didn’t think so.

The House passed a bill Thursday that may be its biggest legislative accomplishment of the year: a $214 billion package that fixes a massive funding gap in Medicare, extends health care for poor children and makes long-term spending cuts.
The bill overwhelmingly passed 392-37, a rare moment of bipartisanship for a Congress accustomed to little action.
“If someone came down from Mars today, into this chamber, they’d be shocked at this camaraderie,” said Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.). “This is great. You’ve got to admit, this is a good feeling.”

Sometimes, when you’re looking to make some new healthy changes to your life, the last thing you want is another calorie-counting food journal or specific list of exercises that tone each troublesome body part. Instead, a simple mantra or two will do.
That’s the premise behind The New Health Rules, the latest book on living well from Frank Lipman, M.D. and Danielle Claro. Their combination of single-page yet comprehensive health tips and photography that would inspire anyone to get moving with the coordinating rules create a new kind of health guide that focuses on sustainable healthy living instead of short-term (and overly specific) solutions. For those who know they want to lead a healthier life but don’t know where to start, any page of this book offers an entry point.
From nutrition and exercise to mental health and lifestyle, The New Health Rules provides a variety of tips for leading a better life that begin with small steps rather than big (and typically more difficult) changes. Rarely do we find one-size-fits-all methods for achieving personal health and wellness, but these broader strategies can apply to everyone — as well as remind us of life’s beautiful truths we often forget.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) will not seek re-election, he said in an interview with The New York Times published Friday. Reid has led the Senate Democrats since 2005.
In a video posted Friday morning, Reid thanked his constituents for allowing him to serve the state of Nevada.
In the video, Reid said he will work to help the Democrats take control of the Senate again, noting he felt it was “inappropriate” to “soak up all those resources on me, when I can be devoting those resources to the caucus.” Reid also warned Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) he’d be working hard until the end of his current term.

Thanks to advances in 3-D printing, it’s now possible to whip up everything from pizza to prosthetics to human organs with the push of a button.
Now researchers have created a 3-D printer that works on the atomic scale, assembling complex molecules from scratch. And they say their molecule-making machine could revolutionize the drug-development process and simplify the fabrication of solar cells and other high-tech products.
A drug discovery revolution? “We’re really excited about the immediate impacts that this will have on drug discovery,” Dr. Martin D. Burke, a professor of chemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and one of the researchers, says in a video released by the university.

A young German co-pilot locked himself alone in the cockpit of a Germanwings airliner and flew it into a mountain with what appears to have been the intent to destroy it, a French prosecutor said on Thursday.
Investigators and grieving relatives were left struggling to explain what motivated Andreas Lubitz, 28, to kill all 150 people on board the Airbus A320, including himself, in Wednesday’s crash in the French Alps.
French and German officials said there was no indication the crash was a terrorist attack, but gave no alternative explanation for his motives.

A violent St. Patrick’s day brawl among white adult men in the middle of Manhattan — which was caught on video — has resulted in no arrests, and only one news report of the incident.
That’s compared to the reams of articles and the five arrests resulting from a video last week of a fight among a group of black teenage girls in a Brooklyn McDonald’s.
Anthony Rooar Decarlis said he thinks videos of fights are “trash,” but the 31-year-old artist still felt compelled to pull out his phone Tuesday and record the drunken brawl, which occurred on 46th Street outside O’Brien’s Pub.

A report released last week holds troubling findings about lasting inequality across the African-American community.
The 2015 “State of Black America” study, conducted by the National Urban League, finds that black Americans fare worse than their white peers across a variety of indicators, including economics, social justice and overall equality. The report, issued every year since 1976, showed modest gains in some areas, but leaves plenty of concerns about the speed of progress more than 50 years after the passage of the Civil Rights Act.
“What do we say and how would we frame the state of black America for 2015? I must use the word crisis,” said Marc H. Morial, president and chief executive of the National Urban League, at a Thursday news conference in Washington, D.C.
