Those two-wheeled “hoverboards” that you’ve been seeing under the feet of NBA players and various celebs may be grounded by legal trouble as Segway has filed a lawsuit against their manufacturer.
Segway, the company founded over a decade ago by Dean Kamen, which pioneered two-wheeled, self-balancing vehicles, launched the lawsuit against Inventist, the maker of the Hovertrax, the balance board some are referring to as a hoverboard.
Revealed in a report by the Hollywood Reporter, the patent lawsuit, which was filed on Friday, also takes aim at Inventist’s other self-balancing device, the one-wheeled Solowheel.

This week, Lexus introduced a short teaser video for SLIDE, a hoverboard that appears to not just live up to our Back to the Future II dreams but, at least stylistically, improve on them. Better yet, it’s more science than science fiction. Here’s how it works—and why you won’t find one at Toys’R’Us any time soon.
Let’s start with that teaser video, a scant 37 seconds of hoverboard hype that almost prompts more skepticism than excitement. A bamboo and carbon fiber skateboard, emitting wisps of smoke, levitates an inch or two off of what appears to be a concrete surface. A foot approaches as if to mount and ride—and then nothing. We cut away.
That’s not a lot to put one’s faith in. We’re barely a year past the most recent convincing hoverboard hoax—a Funny or Die promotion, it turned out—and are halfway through the year in which BTTFII took place, a ripe time for attention-grabbing tie-ins.

A hoverboard rider recently soared into Guinness World Records after flying a record distance on the futuristic, flying skateboard.
Catalin Alexandru Duru, the inventor of the prototype hoverboard, traveled the length of two-and-a-half football fields (about 905 feet or 375 meters) to achieve the world record title before landing gently in the sparkling water of Quebec’s Lake Ouareau.
Duru reached a height of 16.4 feet (5 m), but the flying board is allegedly capable of much greater altitudes, said Duru, who told Guinness World Records that his machine could reach “scary heights.”
