On my first two trips to Hawai‘i I photographed things people who live there might consider mundane: red dirt along a paved road, sunlit hibiscus draped over a parking lot wall, blue-faced Zebra Doves so calm I almost tripped over them because they didn’t skitter away like the nervous pigeons back home in New York City. The only palm trees I’d ever seen before appeared on postcards, television, and luau-themed party decorations. In Hawai‘i I wasted no time filling my camera with pictures of real ones: swaying palms against a light-filled morning sky, baby palms trees in the midday sun, and full-grown trees wrapped in twinkling lights under an aspirin moon.
The first trip, in 2009, happened by accident. At least it felt that way. My then-boyfriend wanted to go somewhere tropical. I wanted to go somewhere interesting, though I had no inkling of the plan he was hatching when I mentioned Hawai‘i. I figured this discussion was just another of the fantasy trips we often took in our heads after watching the Travel Channel. Neither of us had passports or much money. But my boyfriend’s job as a New York City public high school special education teacher had wrecked him. For the past few years, half the teachers at his school left by year’s end. C. stood on the verge of quitting too. Instead, he started drinking on the train ride to work in the mornings. Then he took his tax refund and booked us a trip to paradise.

A gunman killed at least three people and injured at least 15 more after opening fire Sunday at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California, law enforcement officials said.
An unidentified suspect was also shot and killed by officers, Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee said during a news conference Sunday night.
The shooter appeared to cut through a fence to gain entry to the festival before opening fire, Smithee said. Authorities killed him “less than a minute” after he began firing on festivalgoers using some kind of a rifle.
Smithee said a second individual may have been involved in the shooting in some way, but that authorities had no one else in custody. A manhunt is currently underway.
“I have no idea what the motive is at this point,” Smithee added, calling the event a “nightmare.”

Winters in Siberia are relentless. On Lake Baikal, the largest freshwater lake in the world by volume, the ice freezes meters thick. The temperature regularly reaches the negatives. The only salvation is the banya, a Russian sort of sauna where one sits in steam and then runs outside and plunges into ice-cold water before returning again. Good for circulation, they say.
But in the summer, this place transforms into paradise. Warmer temperatures bring vacationing Russians to Baikal’s shores in swimsuits. Verdant taiga forests curtain glistening blue water, where the nerpa, a freshwater seal only found by Baikal, plunges below water and resurfaces. This is the “Galapagos of Russia,” after all, teeming with endemic wildlife, and one of the oldest lakes in the world, at around 25 million years old. The region’s historical shamanist and Buddhist beliefs lend to the mystical atmosphere. Thousands of miles from any major city, the Siberian isolation at last feels glorious in the summertime, like a retreat, zapping the troubles and cares of this world on expansive beaches. The City of Chicago will dedicate a ten-story mural to late blues icon Muddy Waters June 8th as part of the Chicago Blues Festival, The Associated Press reports. The mural is painted on the side of the building at 17 North State Street, at the corner of State and Washington Streets.
The Muddy Waters Legacy band will perform a free concert during the ceremony, which begins at noon. The outfit features Waters’ former bandmate, Rick Kreher, and sons guitarist Big Bill Morganfield and singer Mud Morganfield,
Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra designed the mural, which was painted last year as part of Columbia College and the Wabash Arts Corridor’s Big Walls Project. Kobra is known for his massive and dazzling murals, including numerous musicians such as Tupac and Notorious B.I.G. in Miami, Bob Dylan in Minneapolis and David Bowie in Jersey City.
.

The Waters mural replaced Kay Rosen’s “Go Do Good” mural, which debuted in 2011. While the mural was being painted, one of the owners of 17 N. State St., Anne Voshel, said that the Waters mural would stay up “as long as it looks good”

If you’ve been following the ongoing battle between solar energy vs. fossil fuels, it might seem like the predominant resources on which the global economy depends – oil, coal and natural gas – will be completely phased out of existence in 2019. In reality, these resources still power most of the planet, while renewable resources like solar and wind only contribute some two to three percent of global energy capacity. This reality check begs the following question: how does solar really stack up against fossil fuels, and why is there so much excitement about the growth of solar?

Since 2009, at least 177 of America’s schools experienced a shooting. These tragedies are as diverse as our nation, but the depth of trauma is hard to convey. There is no standard definition for what qualifies as a school shooting in the US. Nor is there a universally accepted database. So CNN built our own. We examined 10 years of shootings on K-12 campuses and found two sobering truths: School shootings are increasing, and no type of community is spared.
Over the past decade, there were at least 180 shootings at K-12 schools across the US. They happened in big cities and in small towns, at homecoming games and during art classes, as students are leaving campus in the afternoon and during late-night arguments in school parking lots.
And they are happening more often.

These days, there’s no shortage of confusing information about eating meat, its effects on our health, and what to look for when buying it. The labels on most meat products make the buying process even more complicated, as you spend (what feels like) hours trying to decipher what’s sneaky marketing lingo versus legit nutritional information.
“Many people are afraid of meat products because of the fear-based marketing that’s commonly used,” Michigan-based registered dietician Kelsey Lorencz told HuffPost. “They don’t know what to do, since they can’t afford the organic, free-range, antibiotic-free items, but are afraid of what’s in the conventional products.”
To help you make better meat-related decisions, both in the store and the kitchen, here’s the truth behind nine common meat myths so you can finally breathe easier.

Although diet and exercise programs usually dominate the weight loss headlines, research suggests that your sleep habits may be just as important. The latest piece of research showing a link between sleep habits and weight gain appeared in the June 10, 2019 issue of JAMA Internal Medicine. This paper found that exposure to artificial lighting at night predicted weight gain over five years of follow-up among more than 43,000 women. This article, however, is merely the latest of hundreds of scientific papers from the last decade indicating that poor sleep makes it easier to gain weight and harder to lose weight. Because there is now such a large and diverse body of research on the metabolic effects of sleep, many people find it difficult to understand the practical implications.

Police will canvass in Gillam and Fox Lake Cree Nation over the next 72 hours, Cpl. Julie Courchaine, the RCMP Manitoba spokeswoman, said Friday at a press conference.
.
The search for Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, has taken authorities about 2,000 miles across Canada’s rural north — from British Columbia to Manitoba — in a case with victims with three nationalities.
.
“Our investigators are also exploring the possibility that the suspects may have inadvertently received assistance in leaving the area,” Courchaine said. “To restate, there have been no confirmed sightings outside of the Gillam area, however we remain open to the possibility.”
