Thousands of years ago, modern humans met Neanderthals in Europe at whatever the equivalent of a singles bar was. They started having a bunch of sex, and now we exist. In the throes of creating the future of humanity, Neanderthals gave us two things: their kickass, pterodactyl-fighting immune systems and allergies.
Those are the discoveries of two papers published Thursday from researchers at the M Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, the Institut Pasteur and the National Center for Scientific Research in Paris.
We’ve already heard that 1% to 6% of modern Eurasian genomes came from two forms of early man, the Neanderthals and the Denisovans. But the new studies explore how our inherited traits affected genes, specifically Toll-like receptors, which detect and respond to things like bacteria, fungi and parasites.

Greece’s prime minister angrily condemned Europe’s response to the refugee crisis Friday, accusing leaders of “crocodile tears” after 22 people drowned in two shipwrecks.
Alex Tsipras expressed “endless grief” at the latest tragedies, saying they had left Europe shamed.
He was speaking as the migrant death toll in the Aegean Sea reached nearly 50 over the past three days.
The Merchant Marine Ministry said 19 people were killed and 138 were rescued near the eastern Aegean Sea island of Kalymnos, in one of the worst accidents in Greek waters since the mass migrant flows started fleeing the war in Syria.

Scientists know it as “the Great Dying.”
It happened in a geologic blink of an eye 252 million years ago. A vast volcanic vent in Siberia belched noxious gases and enough lava to build a new continent the size of Europe. The air grew warmer and drier, wildfires ravaged the landscape, and the oceans turned toxic. Over the course of a few tens of thousands of years 90 percent of all ocean species and three quarters of life on land was lost.
“It was devastating,” said paleontologist Peter Roopnarine. “The closest life on Earth has ever gotten to vanishing completely.”

Underlying the question of whether European leaders and the Greek state will be able to come to terms amid the financial crisis is one even more fundamental: Is there room in Europe for democracy?
In January, Greek voters elected a government on a platform of anti-austerity, one that argued further cuts would not just be cruel to a people already experiencing 25 percent unemployment, but economically backward as well. European leaders have spent the five months since then doing everything they can to drive that Greek government from power.
Europe’s modern experiment with democracy began with many fits and starts, but in recent years it seemed to cement itself. That appears to have been a mirage.

As many as 700 migrants were feared dead on Sunday after their boat capsized in the Mediterranean, raising pressure on Europe to face down anti-immigrant bias and find money for support as turmoil in Libya and the Middle East worsens the crisis.
If the death toll is confirmed, it will bring to 1,500 the total number of people who died this year seeking to reach Europe – a swelling exodus that prompted Europe to downsize its seek and rescue border protection program in a bid to deter them. International aid groups strongly criticized the decision.
After news of Sunday’s disaster several government leaders called for emergency talks and EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said foreign ministers would discuss the immigration crisis at a meeting in Luxembourg on Monday. European Council President Donald Tusk said he was considering calling a special meeting of EU leaders, a summit that Renzi had called for earlier.

Now that is cool: Testing your sugar without needles and without blood droplets.
In Europe, the medical company Abbott has just released its FreeStyle Libre system, which may usher in a revolution in diabetes care. And both doctors and patients can’t wait.
Prabahar Gopalakrishnan, 26, is a type 1 diabetic who has taken daily insulin injections since the age of seven. “I’ve probably pricked my fingers almost 15,000 times so far,” he tells me.

For more than 40 industrialized nations — including countries such as Australia, Brazil, China, Russia, and Spain — the question of whether or not to identify and label GMOs is a no-brainer. When asked how Europeans handle GMO labeling, a European colleague of mine — not surprisingly — laughed as she wisely said, “You Americans can make such a big deal out of nothing. In Europe, this is a very easy question to answer: Research has consistently shown that it is bad for you, so we stopped using it.”
What she meant is that GMO labeling is a requirement in Europe. Because well-informed Europeans do not want to eat GMOs, they simply stopped buying them. The same food companies — such as Nestle, Kraft and Hershey, the ones pouring millions of dollars into defeating the ballot in California — Do not use GMOs in the European food market. Period.

You could call it the final frontier in gender equality.
Though 12 men have set foot on the moon, no woman has yet taken that giant leap.
But under extraordinary plans set out today, the world’s superpowers will come together to make it happen.
And not content to stop there, they will also build a permanent base on its surface and then travel to Mars.
Science minister David Willetts claims Britain can help bring the US, Europe and China together to take space travel into its next phase.
Mr Willetts said Stevenage – the home of Space City, which makes a quarter of the world’s satellites – would be ‘at the heart of the global space effort’.
Last year, republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich promised that if he won, America would have a permanent base on the moon by the end of his second term.
The 12 men who have set foot on the moon have all been American, but the last one was 41 years ago.
Mr Willetts predicted that it will actually be the Chinese who next return humans to the moon.
