A 75-year-old woman was convicted Tuesday of second-degree murder for killing her teenage grandson last spring in her Detroit-area home, after jurors rejected her claim that she shot him six times in self-defense.
Sandra Layne cried quietly when she heard the verdict, which was delivered during the first full day of jury deliberations. She was also found guilty of using a firearm during a felony and likely faces at least 14 years in prison for the death of her grandson, Jonathan Hoffman.
Defense attorney Jerome Sabbota said later that Layne was “devastated” by the verdict.

Layne, 75, is charged in the slaying of her teenage grandson. She said she shot him in self-defense because she feared the drug-crazed 17-year-old would harm her. After years of rumors, the search for Jimmy Hoffa, the Teamsters boss who disappeared in 1975, is going underground.
Police in Roseville, Mich., got a tip that prompted them to do a radar scan of the ground under a driveway at a home in the suburb of Detroit, according to the Detroit Free Press. After finding an “anomaly,” they will be bringing forensic anthropologists to the scene this Friday to search for remains.

(AP) DETROIT — The federal government now says a 101-year-old Detroit woman it promised could move back into her foreclosed home four months ago can’t return because the building’s unsanitary and unsafe.
