Climate change killed the aliens, and it might kill us too, new simulation suggests

Did climate change already kill all the aliens we’ve been searching for?

According to astrophysicist Adam Frank, it’s certainly a possibility — and whether humans are doomed to the same fate may already be out of our hands.

Frank, a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Rochester in New York, is the lead author of a new paper published May 1 in the journal Astrobiology that aims to take what Frank calls a “10,000-light-year” view of anthropogenic (human-caused) climate change. Using mathematical models based on the disappearance of a real-life lost civilization here on Earth (the former inhabitants of Easter Island), Frank and his colleagues simulated how various alien civilizations might rise and fall if they were to increasingly convert their planet’s limited natural resources into energy. [12 Possible Reasons We Haven’t Found Aliens]

Roam Robotics Announces $2500 Soft Exoskeleton For Skiers and Snowboarders

Over the past few years, we’ve heard some vague suggestions that powered exoskeletons will, “at some point soon,” be available for applications besides meeting the needs of people doing physical rehabilitation, industrial workers, and the elderly. The rest of us could get plenty of use out of exoskeletons too, for any situation in which our bodies need to support more weight for longer than would otherwise be comfortable. It’s understandable that most exoskeleton companies aren’t going for the consumer market right away, because exoskeletons are expensive, and folks like you and me simply wouldn’t be able to justify the cost.

Yesterday, Roam Robotics (which was birthed from company-known-for-doing-weird-things, Otherlab) announced that it’s planning on selling a new kind of exoskeleton designed to offer leg support to skiers and snowboarders. The cost? Just $2500. The gadget, powered by soft pneumatic actuators, will be rentable at ski resorts for way, way less than it’s full purchase price. Roam says that without any training at all, it’ll enable you to ski better for longer without getting nearly as tired.

We Can Probably Blame Jay Leno For This Dumb Iraq War Myth

Sarah Palin never said “I can see Russia from my house” and George W. Bush didn’t wave at Stevie Wonder. But political myths like these have ways of sticking in the public memory and distorting history.

When it comes to the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, rumors have circulated since the early months of the conflict that Washington’s original name for the war was “Operation Iraqi Liberation.” After the war’s architects realized that name produced the embarrassing acronym “OIL,” they quickly changed the official title to “Operation Iraqi Freedom.”

In reality, however, there is no public record of Operation Iraqi Liberation as the official U.S. label, and no evidence that it was ever seriously considered.

Woman Adopts A Tiny Dog But Is Stunned At What It Grows Up To Be

Massive Alaskan malamute Tydus grows even bigger than his owner.

One of the biggest factors that many people consider when looking to adopt a dog is size. Big pups are great, but they present a lot of challenges. Conversely, while small dogs are convenient, sometimes you just want more to love! Ultimately, it’s a personal choice.

When Yumna, a resident of South Africa, adopted Tydus the dog, she wasn’t too concerned. After all, the puppy was so tiny! Inevitably, of course, Tydus would grow… and grow and grow.

In the end, Yumna never could have predicted how humongous Tydus would become…

Unlucky bobcat spends Thanksgiving stuck in car grille

One distressed bobcat found itself taking a rather longer journey that it anticipated, after being hit by a car and transported on a 50-mile road trip. The unlucky animal found itself caught in the grille of a woman’s Toyota Prius and was forced to travel with her to work through Gloucester, Virginia.

Workers from Richmond’s Animal Care and Control centre (RACC) helped the woman safely remove her feline passenger from the car, and took it to the Wildlife Centre of Virginia for a checkup.

The New Hot 5, American-based jazz band plays for a herd of cows in Autrans, France. The unedited footage is now uploaded on our channel in two parts. If you want to hear more, check out our other videos of concerts for humans.

The two songs in this video are both in the public domain:

1. “When the Saints Go Marching In” is a traditional early American folk hymn of unknown origin.

2. “Bill Bailey, Won’t You Please Come Home” composed by Hughie Cannon (1877–1912) was published in 1902.
