The scent of lavender is known for its soothing properties, and for this reason is often recommended to people as a relaxation or sleep aid. But according to new research, the calming scent can also make us more trusting of others.

“Our results might have various serious implications for a broad range of situations in which interpersonal trust is an essential element,” Leiden psychologist Roberta Sellaro said in a statement. “Smelling the aroma of lavender may help a seller to establish more easily a trusting negotiation to sell a car, or in a grocery store it may induce consumers to spend more money buying products. The smell of lavender may also be helpful in sport psychology to enhance trust and build team spirit, for example in the case of team games such as soccer and volleyball.”

I really liked Belle, played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw.  Another movie based on a true story that tells the horrors of the Black Plight.  In 1761, Dido Elizabeth Belle was born to a white captain of the Royal Navy and Maria Belle, a Black enslaved African woman from the West Indies.  When her mother died, her father, Captain Sir John Lindsay (Matthew Goode) took his daughter, Belle to his aristocratic uncle, Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife Lady Mansfield (Emily Watson) to be reared in a better environment with all the advantages Blacks were not privy to.  Ironically, the biggest trial in British history, regarding a slave ship and an insurance company, known as the Zong massacre, was being decided by Belle’s great uncle who was the chief magistrate presiding over the case.  Talk of this trial reached Belle who quickly learned what being Black really meant.  She…

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies ended it’s trilogy with lots of action, fighting, killing and sadness. I didn’t like this version as much as the last one. The story didn’t flow as smoothly and too many major characters died. It all seemed so pointless. In my opinion, a fantasy like The Hobbit should make you feel like you’ve been on an adventurous journey and the ending should give you warm fuzzes because good triumphs over evil. Maybe a couple of main, good people die along the way but all my hopes and dreams went up in smoke because too many hopefuls didn’t make it to the end. The action was on going, the acting was spot on and overall, The Hobbit was exciting. I’m not sure why so much dying was written into this film, but it was. The army of Elves, the army of Dwarves…

Dr. Starla Fitch has some interesting thoughts on the choosing your battles in this war:

If we’re fighting ourselves in the war against doctor burnout, then no one is going to win. We’re setting ourselves up for disappointment, for a loss. Just like the person who loses their temper in road rage, we’ve got a lose-lose situation.

The answer is not in getting the driver of the other car to change behavior. Or the person with the loaded grocery cart to change the line they are in. Or the clerk in the holiday ham store to change their attitude.

The real answer is to alter our reaction to it.

To be teflon.

Let our reaction to the things that we can’t change roll like water off a duck’s back.

So we can have the energy to meet the challenges of the things we can change.

This is a thought I quite often have. Is it possible? Or is this a never-ending battle which I’m never going to be free from?

Sometimes there’s no end for me in sight. Actually there never is. I can never see the possibilities infront of me. There’s always too much crap in my head to allow me to see the light at the end of the tunnel. But I guess that’s the definition of mental illness in a roundabout way – it’s just a more cluttered and cramped tunnel so that it’s harder to see the light in the distance.

But it is there. If we keep pushing, fighting and striving to reach it. It has to be. There are so many stories of people that no longer fit the criteria to be diagnosed with their conditions and people that genuinely don’t struggle as much as they used to. There are…

Sometimes the Obamacare haters resolutely held their ground even as the facts disproved their theories. This is known as “Obamacare trutherism.”

Welcome to Musical Monday! Music has been known to affect our emotions. Listening to music can make us happy or sad, relaxed or motivated, put us to sleep or make us want to dance. Music absolutely plucks at our heartstrings bringing to the surface a multitude of emotions.

Someone once described music to me as a time machine. When we listen it often transports us back to a place in time. A certain song can bring back feelings of someone we loved, our wedding day, someone who died, or any of the many important times in our lives.

Music has always been a big part of my life. When I am sad listening to a sad song often allows me to release that sadness. Happy songs tend to take away my sadness. It has helped motivate me to do housework. Yep, just crank up the radio or a music television…
