The median income for all Americans was $35,540 in 2013, up slightly from the year before. At a number of U.S. companies, salaries are considerably higher. Based on figures provided by Glassdoor, 24/7 Wall St. examined the 15 highest paying companies in America. At these companies, the median annual compensation is at least four times the nationwide median income.

The companies that pay their employees the most fall primarily into two industries: consulting firms and tech companies. These companies attract some of the nation’s most highly-skilled workers, who demand high salaries to match their expected performance.

 According to Andrew Chamberlain, chief economist at Glassdoor, both types of high-paying companies require very high-skilled workers. However, these workers are highly paid for very different reasons.

A campaigner who raised awareness of the rare genetic condition progeria, which causes those affected to age about eight times faster than average, has died at age 17.

The U.S.-based Progeria Research Foundation said Hayley Okines, from East Sussex in England, died Thursday at her home.

The group’s executive director Audrey Gordon praised Okines for her participation in drug trials and research that helped make progress toward treatment for the condition. Also known as Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS), symptoms such as growth failure, loss of body fat and hair, aged-looking skin and stiffness of joints show up during the first year of life.

“Today we remember her tremendous courage and determination,” the group posted on its website.

Scientists have long known that “we are made of star stuff” — or, in other words, cosmic dust. But where all that dust came from, and how it survived, has been a bit of a mystery.

Previous research held that supernovas–explosions of stars in their death throes–spewed out massive amounts of dust into the early universe. However, astronomers didn’t know if that dust was able to withstand shockwaves from the explosion to serve as fodder for planets and stars to form.

Now, for the first time, an international team of astronomers has directly observed a cloud of cosmic dust that did survive in the turbulent environment of a supernova remnant, providing support for the theory that supernovas produced the vast amount of cosmic dust in the early universe.

One of the best spiritual movies I’ve seen.  Do You Believe? is well acted with an unforgettable story.  12 lives eventually intersect with each other by the end of a fantastic journey.  Some learn, some remain the same, some die and some don’t have a clue.  Do You Believe? is suspenseful, thrilling, exciting, emotionally draining and even funny.  Kudos to Jon Gunn for directing a marvelous movie.  Mira Sorvino, who plays Samantha, gives a riveting performance and her daughter, in the movie, Lily (Makenzie Moss) steals the show. A judge has dismissed the murder case against an Arizona woman who spent more than 20 years on death row in the killing of her 4-year-old son.

Judge Rosa Mroz ended the case against Debra Jean Milke on Monday after prosecutors lost their last appeal last week.

Milke was convicted of murder in 1990 in the death of her son, who thought he was going to see Santa Claus at a mall only to be taken to a desert by two men and shot in the head.
