“Desertification is a fancy word for land that is turning to desert,” begins Allan Savory in this quietly powerful talk. And terrifyingly, it’s happening to about two-thirds of the world’s grasslands, accelerating climate change and causing traditional grazing societies to descend into social chaos. Savory has devoted his life to stopping it. He now believes — and his work so far shows — that a surprising factor can protect grasslands and even reclaim degraded land that was once desert.

The inevitable has happened. Microplastics have already been found in birds and fish and whales, so it should have come as no surprise that they have now been discovered in humans. To be specific but indelicate, tiny plastic particles and fibers have been found in the stool of eight people who provided samples as part of a pilot study.
This news confirms the predictions of researchers who have tracked microplastics to remote locations, and identified these tiny particles in drinking water, beer, table salt, and seafood. But the implications in this particular case remain unclear.
The fact that this is the first documentation of such materials in humans is significant. Yet such a small survey can’t begin to answer the unknowns that hang over the science of microplastics: Where precisely did these plastic fragments originate? And what are the potential risks to human health?

Microplastics – What are they?
Plastic pieces less than 5 millimeters in size are commonly called microplastics. Microplastics are used in manufacturing, industry, and 3D printing. They are in consumer products such as synthetic clothing fabric, toothpaste, and skincare products. They are also formed when plastics break apart into tiny beads.
When microplastics wash down a drain, they are not filtered by wastewater treatment. They spread far across and throughout the ocean. Major sources of microplastics include:
Agricultural runoff
Aquaculture
Cruise ships
Ocean dumping
Stormwater
The shipping and fishing industries
Urban runoff
Waste management

There are many pressing issues facing our world. Climate change driven by human activity is probably the most urgent. Another issue, however, is the by-products of industry, such as microplastics. Microplastics are defined as small bits, smaller than 5 millimeters in length, that collect in our wastewater and make it through most filtration systems into our oceans and rivers. Subsequently, everything living in those bodies of water is affected—from coral reefs ingesting plastics to the entire marine food chain. There’s a good chance that anything you’ve eaten in the past week had a little bit of plastic in it.
A teenager from an island off of southern Ireland, inspired by the remnants of an oil spill, has come up with a novel way to use NASA-invented magnetic liquid to extract microplastics from water. Eighteen-year-old Fionn Ferreira hypothesized that he could pull out about 85% of the microplastics in his experiment. As Business Insider explains, NASA engineer Steve Papell, in trying to magnetize rocket fuel in 1963 to combat zero-gravity conditions in space, created the first ferrofluid.

Lil Nas X is riding his horse right into the history books with “Old Town Road,” breaking the record for the longest-running streak at the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The genre-defying summer smash has dominated the Hot 100 chart for its 17th consecutive week, surpassing previous record-holders “Despacito” by Daddy Yankee, Luis Fonsi, and Justin Bieber, and 1995’s “One Sweet Day” by Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey, which both topped out at 16 weeks.
The 20-year-old rapper, who’s blocked competition like Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish from securing the top spot in recent months, seemed all but certain that he’d reign once again, writing on Twitter last week, “what we doing to celebrate the billboard record when we break it y’all.” He also thanked anyone who streamed the song since its release.

Capital One, the Virginia-based bank with a popular credit card business, announced Monday that a hacker had accessed about 100 million credit card applications, and investigators say thousands of Social Security and bank account numbers were also taken.
The FBI has arrested a Seattle-area woman, Paige A. Thompson, on a charge of computer fraud and abuse, according to court records.
The hack appears to be one of the largest data breaches ever to hit a financial services firm. In 2017, the credit-reporting company Equifax disclosed that hackers had stolen the personal information of 147 million people. Last week, it reached a $700 million settlement with U.S. regulators over that breach.

Dozens of people were injured when a wave pool in China malfunctioned, triggering a tsunami-like wave.
Visitors to a water park in Northern China who were in the wave pool were suddenly smashed by the giant wave.
The dramatic footage shows the fast-moving wave throwing swimmers on rafts into the air and toppling into one another, while others frantically try to swim away from the wall of water.
About 44 people were injured, some with fractured ribs, according to the South China Morning Post.

The top US Navy SEAL recently sent a blistering letter to the force, writing in boldface type, “We have a problem,” following several high profile incidents of alleged misbehavior by the US Navy’s elite service members, CNN has learned.
Rear Adm. Collin Green has given commanders until August 7 to detail the problems they see and provide recommendations on how they will ensure troops are engaging in ethical and professional behavior..The letter — dated July 25 and exclusively obtained by CNN — comes in the wake of several high profile incidents of alleged misbehavior by SEALs..“I don’t know yet if we have a culture problem, I do know that we have a good order and discipline problem that must be addressed immediately,” Green said.

A few hours before the Grateful Dead reboot band Dead & Company took the stage for its first show at the Hollywood Bowl earlier this month, hundreds of concertgoers transformed the venue’s parking lot into a kind of tie-dyed bazaar. Unofficial vendors lined the perimeter of the lot hawking homemade wares that ranged from customized tour T-shirts and stickers to edible goodies with varying psychoactive properties.
Deadheads first began selling bootleg merchandise at scenes like this — known as “Shakedown Streets” to the initiated — at least as far back as the 1980s. From the beginning, the Grateful Dead was famously lax in enforcing its intellectual property rights and trademarks, allowing fans to create their own designs using the band’s expansive iconography.
Over the past few years, as the revitalized Dead & Company has filled arenas across the country, a new generation has begun putting its own spin on the “lot art” tradition. Having built influential followings on Instagram, these younger Heads have unwittingly helped turn the Grateful Dead aesthetic into a bona fide fashion trend, which is now crossing over into the worlds of streetwear and even high fashion.
