How a trivial cell phone hack is ruining lives

On a Tuesday night in May, Sean Coonce was reading the news in bed when his phone dropped service. He chalked it up to tech being tech and went to sleep. When he woke up, his Gmail account had been stolen and by Wednesday evening he was out $100,000.

“This is still very raw (I haven’t even told my family yet),” Coonce wrote in an anguished Medium post. “I can’t stop thinking about the small, easy things I could have done to protect myself along the way.”

On a Monday night in June, Matthew Miller’s daughter woke him up to say that his Twitter account had been hacked. He had no cell phone service; within a few days Miller lost his Gmail and Twitter account and $25,000 from his family bank account.

Meet the Man Who Has Lived Alone on This Island for 28 Years

Seventy-eight-year-old Mauro Morandi often walks along the rocky shores of Budelli Island and looks out over the disconsolate sea, feeling dwarfed by the phantom forces that tug and twist the tides.

“We think we are giants that can dominate the Earth, but we’re just mosquitos,” Morandi says.

In 1989 on a stretch of water between Sardinia and Corsica, with a crippled engine and anchor adrift, Morandi’s catamaran was gripped by these same inexorable forces and carried to the shores of Budelli Island. When he learned that its caretaker was retiring from his post in two days, Morandi—long disenchanted with society—sold the catamaran and took his place.

.

Mauro Morandi has lived alone on Budelli Island for 28 years. “What I love the most is the silence,” he says. “The silence in winter when there isn’t a storm and no one is around, but also the summer silence of sunset.”

Suicide rates in girls are rising, study finds, especially in those age 10 to 14

Suicide rates for young girls are rising at a pace faster than that of boys, changing the established patterns that boys are more likely to die by suicide and that girls are more likely to consider it and attempt it, according to a new study.

Researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio analyzed suicide rates of US kids and teens ages 10 to 19 between 1975 and 2016 using the Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research database, run by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
.
In that period, there were more than 85,000 suicides in kids and teens, with 80% in boys and 20% in girls. The rates of suicide peaked in 1993 and had been on the decline until 2007, when they again started to climb, according to the findings, published Friday in JAMA.
.
Although boys were 3.8 times more likely than girls to kill themselves over the 40-year study period, the gap is rapidly narrowing. Starting in 2007, the rates of suicide for girls 10 to 14 increased 12.7% per year, compared with 7.1% for boys the same age. A similar trend was seen for teens 15 to 19, with rates of suicide going up 7.9% for girls and 3.5% for boys.

I.M. Pei, an American modernist architect regarded as one of the world’s leading designers of civic centers and cultural institutions, including the National Gallery of Art’s East Building, the glass pyramid at the entrance to the Louvre in Paris and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, died May 16 at a hospital in Manhattan. He was 102.

His son Li Chung “Sandi” Pei confirmed the death but did not provide a specific cause.

Considered one of the most significant and prolific architects of the 20th century, the New York-based designer left a legacy of notable buildings that span the globe. His significant works include the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan (1979 to 1986); the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas (1982 to 1989); the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong (1982 to 1989); and the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar (2003 to 2008).

Fire At Pennsylvania Day Care Kills 5 Children

A fire at a Pennsylvania home operating as a day care center killed five children, according to authorities.

The fire occurred at a home in the town of Erie early Sunday morning, Fire Chief Guy Santone told CBS affiliate WSEE-TV. Fire officials said they pulled seven people out of the home, but were unable to revive the five children.

The home’s address is listed on the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership as a 24-hour child care center called Harris Family Day Care, according to the network. Santone said the day care owner was injured in the fire and flown to UPMC Mercy hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment.

Four of the five children who died in the fire were staying at the day care while their parents were working overnight, their grandmother told the Erie Times-News. Valerie Lockett-Slupski said that her grandchildren were two boys and two girls.

Two New Ebola Treatments Prove Highly Effective in Congo Epidemic

Two experimental treatments to treat Ebola infection work so well that they will now be offered to all patients in the Democratic Republic of Congo, scientists announced Monday.

The antibody-based treatments are so powerful — “Now we can say that 90 percent can come out of treatment cured,” one scientist said — that they raise hopes that the disastrous epidemic in eastern Congo can soon be stopped.

Many families in the epidemic zone have been hiding their sick or bringing them in near death, too late to save. The epidemic has infected about 2,800 known patients and has killed more than 1,800 of them, according to the World Health Organization.

How to survive 12 hours in an airport

Consuming vodka and clam chowder at 6 a.m. on a Wednesday isn’t behavior normally condoned by the general public. But tell people that you’re having an early morning bloody mary and a snack at the airport, and no one bats an eye.

That’s because the airport is not reality. The airport is a parallel dimension in which the normal rules that govern humanity are cast aside. Strange behaviors — like drinking liquor at daybreak, or sitting on linoleum tethered to an electrical outlet — become the norm.

I’ve only taken stock of my own airport oddities — and observed the oddities of others — when I’m waiting to board a flight or during a reasonably timed layover. What would it be like to stay longer, just for the sake of people watching? To better understand the idiosyncrasies of life within an airport, I am going on a mission to spend 12 hours inside one.

What you really need to know about those cheap airfares

.

You get a text from a friend: “Flights to Paris are 300 bucks!” it says. Do you a) Book now, figure it out later, b) Agonize over whether you should do it and finally go to book only to find it’s sold out, or c) Hit delete — you don’t need that temptation?

When it happened to me, thanks to a travel planner friend who keeps an eye on all things budget travel, my husband and I were team “a” all the way. Once the giddiness — we’re going to Paris! — wore off a bit, some of the reality sunk in. We’re flying out of an airport 80 miles away. It’s the bare-bones of economy seating so there’s no checked luggage. And sitting together? Ha! With no free seat selection, it’ll be a miracle if we don’t each land in middle seats on opposite sides of the plane. Now, for a $300 airfare to our favorite place on earth, those are all trade-offs we’re willing to make.

But when you’re under the gun to make a decision it can be tough to weigh the pros and cons. For some guidance when it comes to navigating bargain airfares, I talked with Scott Keyes of Scott’s Cheap Flights, the treasure trove of cheap airfares (I actually had to unsubscribe from his deals email because it was just too much temptation!). And I chatted with Ben Mutzabaugh, Senior Aviation Editor for The Points Guy, an essential site for frequent travelers.

Ohio family using DNA kit learns dad and daughter not related, sues fertility clinic

An Ohio family using a home DNA test found that their 25-year-old daughter is not related to her father, according to a lawsuit they filed against a hospital and two fertility practices.

Joe Cartellone said his family made the discovery earlier this year after buying an Ancestry DNA kit to learn more about their Italian heritage, the family’s lawsuit filed Wednesday in the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas said.

“I never would have imagined the Christmas gift of a home DNA kit would unveil this kind of abuse of our trust,” Cartellone told reporters this week. “It’s hard to explain the shock and agony when you find out someone you love and care for — your own daughter — is not genetically related to you.”
