Will London Fall?

London may be the capital of the world. You can argue for New York, but London has a case. Modern London is the metropolis that globalization created. Walk the streets of Holborn, ride an escalator down to the Tube and listen to the languages in the air. Italian mingles with Hindi, or Mandarin, or Spanish, or Portuguese. Walk through the City, the financial district, and listen to the plumbing system of international capitalism. London is banker to the planet.

25 Years Since Rodney King Riots: Race, Rebellion and Rebirth in South L.A.

Najee Ali watched the first flares of unrest in South Central Los Angeles from home, heeding his better instincts to stay out of trouble after four police officers were cleared in the beating of Rodney King.

He changed his mind when a group of black men pounded a white trucker unconscious live on TV.

Ali felt sorry for the victim, but he also felt moved by the countless other beatings, killings and daily injustices heaped upon the black community. He got in his car and drove into the heart of the fury, ready to smash and burn anything that represented society’s boots on the necks of African-Americans.

He saw rage and sadness in neighbors’ faces, gang members pooled in the streets, women banging pots and pans, and cops looking frightened.

“If you were non-black on that day, there was no compassion for anybody except for black people,” Ali recalled.

People’s Climate March Spurs Thousands to Descend on the White House

.

On President Trump’s 100th day in office, thousands of climate activists descended on Washington, D.C., to send the president a message — climate change is real.

Demonstrators braved temperatures above the 90s Saturday to march down Pennsylvania Avenue, chanting “water is life” and “keep it in the soil, can’t drink oil!” The gathering, already a familiar sight during Trump’s nascent presidency, came together under the banner of the People’s Climate March.

Participants surrounded the White House complex and staged a choreographed sit-in, beating their chests 100 times to symbolize both the president’s time in office and the heartbeat of the environmental movement. Trump was in residence at the time.

The Sierra Club helped organize the event, which drew celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio, former vice president Al Gore and climate and clean water activists like Mari Copeny, best known as Little Miss Flint.

Inside Donald Trump’s tumultuous first 100 days

Chapter 1: ‘Parallel universes’

One Republican lawmaker called President Donald Trump’s first weeks in office “batshit crazy.”

Someone else who regularly speaks with the President described him during a particularly low point in March as a “caged animal” in the White House.

“He wanted to win. He didn’t want to do this,” this person said, referring to the task of governing.

Another person close to Trump portrayed a tight inner circle of top aides gripped by paranoia to the point that “if one of them goes into that office alone, the other one is there within two minutes” to make sure their voice is heard.

The presidency poses profound challenges for the 70-year-old Trump, who owes much of his success in business and last year’s campaign to a savvy ability to cultivate a favorable persona. Now that he’s in the White House, the problem, many sources said, is that Trump is so concerned about an image he can’t control and staffers are so anxious about their standing with him that the administration easily slides into dysfunction.

Trump: ‘8-year assault’ on Second Amendment is over

.

On the eve of his 100th day in office, President Donald Trump used a speech at the National Rifle Association to help renew his standing among a conservative base that’s wary after watching the President reverse course on a series of campaign promises.

Trump declared that an “eight-year assault” on gun ownership rights had come to a “crashing end” with his election.
He vowed to press forward on his plan to construct a border wall, despite setbacks in securing funding for the project or convincing Mexico to pay for it.
.
And after regaling the crowd with a retelling of his Election Night victory, he revived a campaign trail insult of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who he suggested was plotting to challenge him in 2020.

Promises, Promises: What Trump Said He Would Do but Hasn’t

President Donald Trump has made little progress on some of his key campaign promises in his first 100 days as president.

Of the 10 core goals for his presidency tracked by NBC News, Trump made progress on two, faltered on four, and did little or nothing on the rest.

Trump’s tangible progress is mostly confined to headline-grabbing executive orders that tackle parts of his promises from the campaign by undertaking regulatory or administrative reviews, or green lighting permits.

“I don’t think there’s any question that the president has done a significant amount on the issues that he put forward in the campaign,” White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters ahead of the 100-day mark, touting “a record number” of executive orders. “We are very proud.”

Ivanka Trump defended her father at a women’s panel in Berlin Tuesday after attendees hissed and booed when she attempted to champion her father’s commitment to women’s issues.

The event opened with the first daughter explaining her role in the White House.
.
“You are first daughter — German audience not familiar — what is your role — to whom are you represented? Your father, the American people, or your business,” asked Miriam Meckel, editor of German business magazine Wirtschaftswoche.

“Well, certainly not the latter, and I am rather unfamiliar with this role as well, as it is quite new to me,” replied Trump, a top adviser to her father. “It has been a little under 100 days, but it is just been a remarkable, an incredible journey.”

The U.S. just lost a trade battle with Mexico

The U.S. just lost a trade battle with Mexico. It’s the first loss of the Trump era.

Mexico and the U.S. have fought for years over tuna. The U.S. insists that any Mexican tuna sold in the U.S. must be “dolphin safe,” meaning dolphins weren’t killed by tuna fisherman, which was once common. Mexico says its fisherman play by the rules. The U.S. government disagrees.

On Tuesday, the World Trade Organization ruled in Mexico’s favor, allowing it to impose trade sanctions worth $163 million a year against the U.S. The WTO says that’s how much money Mexico has lost from the U.S. unfairly penalizing Mexican tuna.

U.S. officials criticized the ruling.

“We are disappointed in the WTO Arbitrator’s decision regarding U.S. dolphin-safe labeling standards,” a spokesperson for the U.S. Trade Representative, a wing of the executive branch, said in a statement.

The Trump administration argues that the WTO ruling didn’t take into account updated US laws on “dolphin safe” tuna, and that it overstated the actual financial loss to Mexican tuna producers, who the USTR accused of intentionally chasing and netting dolphins.

Trump agrees ‘not to terminate NAFTA at this time’

President Donald Trump told the leaders of Canada and Mexico Wednesday he was not immediately planning to end the North American Free Trade Agreement, a pact which he railed against as a candidate and as recently as last week declared was harmful to US workers.

In a description of Trump’s phone calls to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Enrique Peña Nieto, the White House said Trump “agreed not to terminate NAFTA at this time and the leaders agreed to proceed swiftly, according to their required internal procedures, to enable the renegotiation of the NAFTA deal to the benefit of all three countries.”
“It is my privilege to bring NAFTA up to date through renegotiation,” Trump said in a written statement that accompanied the readout of his phone calls. “It is an honor to deal with both President Peña Nieto and Prime Minister Trudeau, and I believe that the end result will make all three countries stronger and better.”
The White House said the phone conversations were “pleasant and productive.”
