Delighted federal health officials said Thursday the number of smokers has plummeted by nearly 20 percent in the past 10 years and dropped a full percentage point in the last year alone.
They’re not sure of all the reasons why, but credit anti-smoking campaigns, better insurance coverage to help people kick the habit, and tougher laws that make it harder to smoke in a growing number places.
But the researchers note that people covered by Medicaid — the government health insurance plan for low-income people, and those who don’t have any health insurance at all are far more likely to smoke than people with good health insurance.

This revolutionary new technology is changing the world for kids born without limbs.
More world-changing technology is coming your way in September.
e-NABLE arms are experimental and the current designs are time-consuming to produce. The Enable Community Foundation is working to increase community throughput by improving designs, training volunteers, and streamlining the matching process. If you’d like to help speed up the process, please consider a donation. Go to http enablingtheufuture.org/donate.

Researchers have found a new way to tell if a suspicious-looking mole is about to turn malignant by looking at its genetic changes.
And they’ve confirmed that people who have moles should not let the sun get on them. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun directly causes the genetic mutations that finally tip a mole over into becoming melanoma, they report in the New England Journal of Medicine.
“Ultraviolet radiation turns moles into melanoma,” said Dr. Boris Bastian of the University of California San Francisco, a pathologist who helped lead the study.
“Moles don’t belong in the sun.”

Cancer treatment like chemotherapy can wreak havoc on a patient’s body — even if it’s an adorable dog. But one man’s plan to print cancer-killing viruses could change cancer treatment forever.

Former President Jimmy Carter got some good news today.
According to a statement from the Carter Center, the former president “is responding well to treatment,” and his cancer shows no signs of worsening.
Carter, who turned 91 last month, was diagnosed with melanoma earlier this year and has undergone several radiation treatments. In spite of his illness, the former president has been in good spirits and continues to devote himself to his charity work, teaching Sunday school at his local church and building homes for Habitat for Humanity.

On Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration approved a drug that uses the herpes simplex virus to sneak into — and annihilate — skin cancer cells.
Studies conducted by manufacturer Amgen Inc. show the drug, Imlygic, shrunk melanomas in about “about 16% of patients injected with the drug … compared with 2% of patients who took more conventional cancer drugs,” CBS News reports. It has no effect on skin cancer that has spread to other regions of the body.
Amgen Inc. told CBS News one course with the drug would cost approximately $65,000.
Imlygic piggybacks into skin-cancer cells using a modified herpes virus and then replicates rapidly, destroying the cells from within, at the same time triggering the body’s immune system into a heightened response against skin tumors.

Addyi, the little pink pill that sparked a war over whether women were being left out of the Viagra revolution, goes on sale Saturday.
The drug, designed to restore a woman’s lost sexual desire, has earned a $1 billion payout for the company that makes it.
Addyi is a daily medication that can’t be taken with alcohol or certain other drugs, and possible side effects could limit its appeal. But experts believe those restrictions could spur development of better treatments for women’s sexual problems after more than a decade of neglect by most of the world’s large drugmakers.

The wrist. The ankle. The back of the neck. The upper arm. The (unthinkable) lower back.
These are all regular tattoo spots, most done without much fanfare. But what about the chest? What about on top of breasts? Or, more specifically, on top of scars?
For breast cancer survivors and those who have had mastectomies, such tattoos are more than a possibility — they’re an increasingly desired tattoo style with an entire diverse community of artists catering to them.
