In what is a perceived legal blow for prosecutors, the jury was hung and the judge declared a mistrial in the trial of Baltimore police officer William Porter in the case of Freddie Gray’s death after sustaining injuries while in custody.
Porter was charged with manslaughter, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct in office in the April 19th death of Gray, who died a week after his neck was broken during a ride in the back of a police van. Gray’s death and the subsequent unrest in Baltimore brought to the fore long simmering tensions in Baltimore and across the nation over socioeconomic disparity and the relationship between law enforcement and the minority communities they serve.
Prosecutors considered Porter’s case key to help strengthening the case against van driver Caesar Goodson, Jr. It was also seen as a signal of how the trials of the other five officers could go.

Having Just One Energy Drink Could Put Your Heart at Risk, Study Suggests

A can of Red Bull might give you wings, but it might also give you a host of heart-related health risks.
According to a study published Nov. 8 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, consuming just one energy drink results in a significant increase in blood pressure. Those acute spikes, the study’s authors wrote, may put energy drink fans at increased cardiovascular risk — though they’ll require further research to make any conclusions.
The participants — all healthy, nonsmoking, medication-free adults — were asked to drink one can of Rockstar Energy Drink and one similar-tasting, caffeine-free placebo drink within five minutes, in random order, on two different days over a span of two weeks. The researchers recorded various cardiovascular data, including heart rate and blood pressure, before and after the participants consumed the drinks.

Jimmy Carter credits the new cancer drug Keytruda for shrinking his brain tumors completely. It’s one more possible victory for the newest class of cancer drugs that empower the immune system to fight off tumors.
But cancer experts note that it’s not at all clear that the drug itself is what shrank Carter’s tumors. The former president was also treated with radiation to his brain and had a large tumor on his liver removed.
While most immune therapy drugs boost the immune system so that it can battle the cancer, Keytruda was the first drug to take a different approach that disrupts a trick tumors use to hide from immune cells.

The case of Abigail Hanna–the pretty, blonde 21-year-old who allegedly kidnapped a toddler she once cared for before shaving her head, burning her with cigarettes, and leaving her by the side of the road some eight miles from her home–has the media fascinated, and it’s easy to understand why: It’s a dramatic, made-for-TV sort of case featuring a small child who endured horrific torture allegedly at the hands of someone who had once been charged with keeping her safe.
That Hanna was a bright, beautiful–and, it must be said, white–college student seems to have amplified the appeal and turned the story into international news, with everyone asking, in one way or another, how someone with so much potential can commit such a heinous crime. A needle may be the answer for those Americans living with HIV, for whom treatment is a hard pill to swallow.
In the trial backed by Johnson & Johnson and GlaxoSmithKline, people living with the virus were given a shot containing two drugs every four or eight weeks. At both intervals, the shot worked just as well as people who were taking three pills per day to suppress their virus, Reuters reports.
Paul Stoffels, head of pharmaceuticals at Johnson & Johnson, told Reuters that the findings were “transformational” in the fight against HIV. Stoffels said he believed the long-acting injection could help improve the lives of those living with HIV by 2020.

On Tuesday, Charlie Sheen appeared on Today to reveal that he is HIV-positive. The 50-year-old actor told host Matt Lauer he wasn’t sure when he contracted the virus, but that he was diagnosed roughly four years ago.
“It’s a hard three letters to absorb. It’s a turning point in one’s life,” Sheen said on Today. “I have a responsibility now to better myself and to help a lot of other people, and hopefully with what we’re doing today others will come forward and say, ‘Thanks, Charlie.'”
Though he’s perhaps the most high-profile individual to go public with his HIV status in recent years, Sheen is just one of an estimated 36.9 million people globally who were HIV-positive at the end of 2014.
