The Turmoil in the Mideast Underlines the Erosion of the Arab State System

Amidst the tumult and chaos raging everywhere in the Middle East, a constant stands out: the eroding power and influence of the state. It is perhaps best described as a tendency toward erosion, even fragmentation, that seems to be underway across the region, but nowhere more so than in Arabism’s heartland — Syria and Iraq.
And yet, while the whole Arab region seems to be affected to one degree or another, Turkey and Iran are not. Why? What accounts for this “Arab” exception? And just how deep-rooted is this state of affairs?
The phenomenon is unlike anything so-called experts on the region, like myself, recognize from the post-Ottoman past; the deeper, pre-Ottoman past, is even less relevant.

Despite everyone calling him a fascist, Donald Trump may have more in common with Jefferson Davis than he does with Benito Mussolini.
“What we’re seeing [with Trump’s rise] is what I would call the second Civil War,” Steve Ross, a history professor at the University of Southern California, told The Huffington Post.
It’s not that all of Trump’s supporters want to own slaves or secede from the United States. But they can see their political clout disappearing, and are responding by supporting an extremist movement.
“In 1860, Abraham Lincoln wins the presidential election and for the first time in American history a president can get elected without getting a single electoral vote from the South,” Ross said.

Marine archaeologists say they’ve found the earliest ship from Europe’s Age of Discovery ever uncovered — the wreck of a vessel from Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama’s brutal second armada to India in 1502.
Experts called it a find of major importance that could change how historians view trade and warfare during a critical period in the development of Western civilization.
The ship is believed to be the Esmeralda, which sank in a storm off the Omani island of Al Hallaniyah in May 1503, researchers said in a paper published in this week’s edition of the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology (PDF). By more than 50 years, it’s the earliest ship ever recovered from the era when Portuguese explorers opened the Western Hemisphere and dominated the Indian subcontinent.

Jury Awards Hulk Hogan $115 Million In Gawker Sex Tape Lawsuit

A Florida jury has sided with Hulk Hogan in the lawsuit the former professional wrestler filed against Gawker Media, awarding him $115 million in damages — $15 million more than he sought.
Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, sued Gawker in 2012 after the online media outlet published an excerpt of a video showing Bollea having sex with the wife of his then-best friend, Bubba The Love Sponge Clem. Hogan and his attorneys alleged publishing the video was an invasion of his privacy. Gawker argued the clip was newsworthy and protected by the First Amendment.
The six-person jury reached their verdict just before 7 p.m., after almost six hours of deliberation. Bollea, wearing an all-black bandana and a cross around his neck, sobbed as the verdict was announced and was hugged by attorneys and family.

Extra-alarm blaze destroys West Side flea market: ‘It’s been a tough fire’

An extra-alarm fire tore through a flea market on the West Side on Tuesday, swallowing cars parked on the collapsing roof and sending thick, black smoke through the West Humboldt Park neighborhood.
Arriving firefighters were told at least two people may have been trapped inside the one-story building in the 4500 block of West Haddon Avenue that houses the Buyer’s Flea Market. Firefighters found a woman who said she had been able to escape from a bathroom, officials said. She was checked at the scene and officials reported no injuries.
The fire continued to burn into the afternoon — more than four hours after it was first spotted around 9 a.m. — fueled by the falling cars and the wares of hundreds of vendors, officials said.
