Sex trafficking victim Cyntoia Brown was released from prison Wednesday after serving 15 years of a life sentence for killing a man in 2004, the Tennessee Department of Corrections said in a statement.
Her story was first thrust into the spotlight when PBS aired a documentary about her in 2011 called, “Me Facing Life: Cyntoia’s Story.” Celebrities including Kim Kardashian and Rihanna have lobbied for her release in recent years.
Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam (R) granted clemency to Brown in January, commuting her life sentence for murder and making her eligible for release on Aug. 7.
A month earlier, the Tennessee Supreme Court had ruled that Brown must serve 51 years before she can be eligible for parole.

If you’ve ever received feedback that you “need to be more strategic,” you know how frustrating it can feel. To add insult to injury, the feedback rarely comes with any concrete guidance on what to do about it. One of my coaching clients, Lisa, a vice president of HR, was in this situation and explains, “I was just told to think bigger picture and to be more strategic. It felt like I had been given the definition of a word by using the same word. It just wasn’t helpful.”
So what specific steps can you take to be more strategic in your current role?
Start by changing your mindset. If you believe that strategic thinking is only for senior executives, think again. It can, and must, happen at every level of the organization; it’s one of those unwritten parts of all job descriptions. Ignore this fact and you risk getting passed over for a promotion, or having your budget cut because your department’s strategic contribution is unclear.

In his major work, The Origins of Political Order, Francis Fukuyama’s poses what he sees as the central question of political evolution: Why did all countries not develop into Denmark? The Danish model of the welfare society and social and political equity is generally regarded as being the source of the high levels of happiness and prosperity that the country enjoys. As Fukuyama concludes, “getting to Denmark is a very long-term goal,” but there is no doubt that its educational system plays a major part and that there are lessons to be learned from it.
What Makes Denmark So Special?
First of all, Denmark has very high levels of bonding social capital. That is, it is a society with tight social bonds and communal traditions and rituals built around human connection. The people of Denmark take great pride in what they call fællesskab–not easily translated into English, but best described as a sense of togetherness. Such strong social bonds are threaded into the country’s history and there are qualities inherent in the Danish educational system that may provide inspiration for schools around the world.

You might not see a school uniform, yet schools in Denmark offer multiple ways to encourage togetherness

President Trump has not criticized the N.F.L. in recent months, but he is still having an impact on the league.
On Wednesday, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Kenny Stills criticized his boss, Stephen Ross, who owns the team, for hosting a re-election fund-raiser for the president this weekend on Long Island.
Stills said that Ross’s support of the president is incompatible with the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality, or RISE, a nonprofit group founded by Ross to use sports to improve race relations.

The tallest building in the world, as of 2019, is Burj Khalifa. The title of “world’s tallest building” has been borne by various buildings, such as the Rouen Cathedral and the Empire State Building.
The skyscraper was invented in Chicago in 1884 when the Home Insurance Building was constructed using a steel-frame with curtain walls instead of load-bearing walls. For the next hundred years, the world’s tallest building was always in the United States with New York City accumulating 86 years, and Chicago accumulating 30 years. After just over a century (1885–1998), the distinction moved to the Eastern Hemisphere. Malaysia was the first country to break the United States’ record of constructing the tallest buildings in the world when the Petronas Twin Towers were completed in 1998. Taiwan’s Taipei 101 was the next building to hold the record, beginning in 2004.
Before the modern skyscraper era, many Christian churches and cathedrals, built mainly in England and Germanic territories between c. 1250–1894, comprised the tallest buildings in the world. Before the 13th century, the tallest buildings in the world cannot be conclusively determined. For instance, the Lighthouse of Alexandria (completed about 280 BC) has been estimated to be 100 m (330 ft) tall, but its true height is not known. For thousands of years, the Great Pyramid in Egypt was the tallest structure in the world, but the Great Pyramid is not considered a building since it is not habitable.

Skylin Jamrowski had just received the worst news of her young life.
Her mother was shot and killed in what police believe was a terror attack fueled by hatred for Hispanic immigrants..“Is my dad dead?” the 5-year-old asked her grandmother. For hours the family didn’t know, searching for facts of what had happened when police say a young white man started shooting outside and then inside a Walmart, killing 22 people and injuring two dozen more..But yes, her stepfather — the man she called dad — was dead along with his wife. Skylin, the eldest of three children, had to be told. She responded with tears and a question about the killer: “Is he going to come and shoot me?”Skylin is not alone, surrounded by the love of her remaining family. She has a younger sister, Victoria, and a baby brother, Paul Gilbert, 2 months old. The baby survived the massacre when his mom, Jordan Anchondo, shielded him with her body when she was shot. His father, Andre Anchondo tried to protect them both, relatives said.
