A former White House ethics adviser says that a sales pitch by Jared Kushner’s sister to potential Chinese investors that was centered on a controversial visa program came “very, very close to solicitation of a bribe.”
“This is corruption, pure and simple,” said Richard Painter, who was an attorney for President George W. Bush and is now a University of Minnesota law professor.
The latest conflict-of-interest uproar to roil President Donald Trump’s administration arose this weekend as the Kushner Companies invited wealthy foreigners to sink cash into a New Jersey real estate project via the EB-5 program.

A 23-year-old Phoenix man has been charged with killing nine people in a series of shootings last year that stoked fear across the city and stymied police.
A tip from the community led investigators to Aaron Saucedo, 23, and detectives were able to link him to the string of attacks by analyzing surveillance video and witness statements and ballistics evidence — including a handgun he pawned, police said.
“Today is a good day in the city of Phoenix,” said Mayor Greg Stanton, praising the law enforcement task force that hunted the shooter for nearly a year.
“They had a clear mission: bring this killer to justice and get it right.”
The gunman’s targets included men, women and children, many of them ambushed near their homes in a working-class neighborhood from August 2015 to July 2016. A woman and her 12-year-old daughter were shot dead in one incident; a man and his 4-year-old nephew escaped unhurt in another.

Henry Sanchez-Milian, 18, and Jose Montano, 17, both students at Rockville High School, were accused in March of raping a 14-year-old schoolmate in a bathroom stall at school. They were arrested and charged as adults with first-degree rape and two counts each of first-degree sexual offense.

The case drew national attention due to the nature of the crime and because Sanchez-Milian, a citizen of Guatemala, was in the US illegally. Montano, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador, was living under “special immigrant juveniles status,” according to his attorney.
But on Friday, prosecutors dropped the rape and sexual offense charges against both students, citing the “lack of corroboration and substantial inconsistencies from the facts.”

An arrest warrant for murder was issued for former Balch Springs officer Roy Oliver, who officials said fatally shot Jordan Edwards while the teenager was a passenger in a vehicle. The shooting occurred Saturday night and Oliver was fired Tuesday.

“The warrant was issued due to evidence that suggested Mr. Oliver intended to cause serious bodily injury and commit an act clearly dangerous to human life that caused the death of an individual,” said Melinda Urbina, a spokeswoman for the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department.
Oliver was booked at the Parker County Jail on Friday but was released after posting bail, jail records show.

Prosecutors were preparing murder charges on Monday in the brutal slaying of two engaged doctors at their penthouse apartment in Boston against the alleged killer — an ex-convict who authorities believe knew of the couple.
Lina Bolaños, 38, and Richard Field, 49, were found dead at a luxury condominium in South Boston on Friday — reportedly with their throats slit and their hands bound — by police responding to a call of a man with a gun on Friday night.
The Boston Police Department said the suspect “immediately began firing” after encountering the officers at around 8:38 p.m. The officers shot back, and wounded the suspect, 30-year-old Bampumim Teixeira, who was taken into custody after the violent struggle and hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

India’s Supreme Court on Friday upheld a lower court’s decision to sentence the men to death.
The judgment met with applause in the courtroom, according to CNN affiliate News18.
“We are very happy that (the) Supreme Court has heard our voice, and that they understood Nirbhaya’s pain in this matter, and that along with Nirbhaya the whole country has found justice,” the victim’s father, Badrinath Singh, told reporters outside the court, using a nickname for his daughter that means “fearless one.”

“We need to work so that the type of crime that happened to Nirbhaya will not happen again,” Asha Singh, the victim’s mother, said at a press briefing.
“This fight is not ours alone. This is every man’s fight. This is everyone’s fight. This is every woman’s fight.”

Facebook is planning to hire thousands of people to help review user content following multiple high-profile incidents of people sharing videos of suicide and murder.
Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO and cofounder, said Wednesday the company will add 3,000 people to its global community operations team to help “review the millions of reports we get every week.” That is in addition to the 4,500 people already on the team.
“Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen people hurting themselves and others on Facebook — either live or in video posted later,” Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook (FB, Tech30)post. “It’s heartbreaking, and I’ve been reflecting on how we can do better for our community.”

The announcement comes weeks after Facebook faced an outcry over a Cleveland murder video that stayed up for hours on the social network before getting removed.

The three victims from the shooting rampage Tuesday were white, and apparently chosen at random, police said. The suspect, Kori Ali Muhammad, 39, is black.

Muhammad had posted on social media a dislike for white people and government officials, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said. He also yelled “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest) when he was arrested Tuesday, officials said.
“We do not believe … that this is a terrorist-related crime,” Dyer told reporters. “This is solely based on race.”

The FBI is assisting in the investigation.

The shootings started around 10:45 a.m. local time.
.
Muhammad fired 16 rounds within 60 to 90 seconds, Dyer said.
