The decadeslong hunt for a masked gunman who was dubbed the Golden State Killer while he terrorized California during the 1970s and 80s is now over, police declared Wednesday.
Joseph James DeAngelo, a 72-year-old former police officer, was arrested overnight at his suburban Sacramento home and was being held without bail at the Sacramento County jail, officials said.
DeAngelo was taken into custody on a warrant out of Ventura County, California, for two murder charges, but police believe that he killed a dozen people, committed 45 rapes and burglarized 120 homes during a 12- year reign of terror.

White police officers in Alabama wrestled a black woman to the ground in a Waffle House early Sunday, exposing her breasts during the struggle and prompting comparisons to the arrest of two black men at a Philadelphia Starbucks earlier this month.
Yet local police maintain that the three officers involved followed protocol and said the department is “not choosing to take any action at this time.” At a news conference Monday afternoon, officials said the woman and her friend were acting belligerent inside the Waffle House in Saraland, north of Mobile, drunkenly yelling profanities at restaurant employees and threatening to return with a gun and “shoot this place up.”
The incident — which was caught on a video that went viral — sparked a sit-in at the store Sunday afternoon and led to responses from the NAACP and some celebrities, even as Waffle House officials contested the details of the family’s story.

With more than 50,000 wind turbines in place across the U.S., wind power now accounts for 8 percent of the nation’s energy-generating capacity — and experts predict that figure could rise to 20 percent by 2030.
But all that clean, renewable energy comes with a high cost to the nation’s wildlife. Researchers estimate that 140,000 to 328,000 birds are killed every year in collisions with the turbines’ spinning rotor blades and support towers. The risk to birds is highest at night, when the blades and towers are cloaked in darkness.
.
Now researchers at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, have hit upon what could prove to be a simple way to protect birds from wind turbines. They’ve used the “signatures” of birds that are visible in raw weather radar data to generate bird maps and live migration forecasts designed to alert wind farm operators to the presence of birds at peak times.

The case, Sessions v. Dimaya, had originated during the Obama administration but had been closely watched to see if the justices would reveal how they will consider the Trump administration’s overall push to both limit immigration and increase deportations.
As expected after the oral argument, Justice Neil Gorsuch joined with the more liberal justices for the first time since joining the court to produce a 5-4 majority invalidating the federal statute. In doing so, Gorsuch was continuing the jurisprudence of Justice Antonin Scalia, who also sided with liberals when it came to the vagueness of statutes used to convict criminal defendants.

Police on Monday arrested a man accused of killing four people at a Waffle House this weekend, ending a 34-hour, door-to-door manhunt that locked down schools and sent fear rippling across the Nashville region.
Authorities discovered Travis Reinking, 29, hiding in the woods behind a construction site about a mile from the restaurant where the shooting occurred in the community of Antioch, southeast of downtown Nashville. Police said Reinking immediately lay on the ground and surrendered when an officer approached him with his gun drawn.
Reinking was taken to a hospital after his arrest and booked later Monday at the Hill Detention Center on four counts of criminal homicide.

A team of US doctors has successfully carried out the world’s first total transplant of a penis and scrotum.
Surgeons at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, performed the operation on a soldier who had been wounded by a bomb in Afghanistan.
They used a penis, scrotum and partial abdominal wall transplanted from a deceased donor.
They say the soldier should be able to regain sexual function, which is impossible with penis reconstructions.
The team of 11 surgeons performed the transplant over 14 hours on 26 March.
It is the first surgery on a combat veteran injured on duty and the first to transplant a complete section of tissue including the scrotum and surrounding abdominal area.

Heroes seem untouchable, Shaw told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Monday.
.
“I just want to be put out there like a regular person,” he said. Maybe then, if people find themselves in dangerous situations, they’ll find “that same thing within them that they can project out,” he said.
.
Be it heroism or bravery, Shaw’s actions have drawn praise from police and the public for preventing further bloodshed.
But as he tells it, “I was just trying to live.”

Ricky Rubio has been one of the NBA’s most exciting guards since he joined the league in 2011.
Unfortunately, since he’s spent the bulk of his career with the Minnesota Timberwolves, we haven’t seen Rubio in the playoffs until this season, his first with the Utah Jazz.
We like what we see.
Rubio lit up the Vivint Smart Home Arena crowd and the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday to the tune of 26 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in a 115-102 Jazz win. The win gave Utah a 2-1 series lead to maintain home court advantage after stealing a game in Oklahoma City.
Rubio did most of his damage in the the first half where he tallied 19 points, six assists and six rebounds. He caught fire in the second quarter, scoring 14-of-15 Jazz points in the midst of a 22-4 Utah run that proved to be the difference in the game.
