Noah Syndergaard had far too much time to dwell on allowing 10 runs in his last start. One thought, in particular, continued to surface.
“I wanted to make sure that never happened again,” the New York Mets right-hander said.
There was never a hint it would Monday as Syndergaard pitched seven shutout innings and struck out 10 while the Mets handled the Washington Nationals 7-3.
Jeff McNeil hit a two-run homer for New York, which played a holiday afternoon game about 15 hours after falling at Philadelphia on Sunday night. The Mets remained four games behind the Chicago Cubs for the NL’s second wild-card spot.

Six White House officials have violated the Hatch Act, according to a letter from the Office of the Special Counsel to Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington Executive Director Noah Bookbinder.
The six officials are White House principal deputy press secretary Raj Shah, White House deputy director of communications Jessica Ditto, executive assistant to the President Madeleine Westerhout, former special assistant to the President and director of media affairs Helen Aguirre Ferré, press secretary for the Vice President Alyssa Farah and Office of Management and Budget deputy communications Director Jacob Wood.

Moving toward a final reckoning as the nation approaches the 20th anniversary of the day that led to the longest war in American history, a military judge on Friday set a date for the death penalty trial at Guantánamo Bay of the five men accused of plotting the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
The judge, Col. W. Shane Cohen of the Air Force, set Jan. 11, 2021, for the start of the selection of a military jury at Camp Justice, the war court compound at the Navy base in Cuba. It is the first time that a judge in the case actually set a start-of-trial date.
The case against Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and four other men, should it proceed, would be the definitive trial tied to the Sept. 11 attacks. Up until now, only foot soldiers of Al Qaeda have been tried at Guantánamo, and many of their convictions have been overturned.

Six-time US Open champion Serena Williams of the United States eased past Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 6-2 on Friday to reach the round of 16 at the US Open for the 18th time in her storied career.
“Had to go out there on business,” Williams said, in her post-match press conference. “I think I tried to do that with all three matches thus far. It was just different because I know that [Muchova] could play today. I knew what she could do.”
No.8 seed Williams fell in the third round of her first-ever US Open in 1998, but since that loss, she has been undefeated in third-round matches at her home Grand Slam event, improving to 18-1 overall following her 73-minute victory over World No.44 Muchova.
Hurricane Dorian hurtled toward the United States and strengthened to a 115-mph, Category 3 “major” hurricane Friday ahead of its expected landfall Monday into Tuesday along Florida’s east coast, forecasters say.
Hurricane warnings were put in place in the northwestern Bahamas as Dorian approached the island nation. A direct hit in the Bahamas is likely on Sunday into Monday.
The storm was slowly turning west on Friday as it makes it way back toward land and is expected to strengthen in the coming days, the National Hurricane Center said. Dorian is forecast slam the southeastern United States as a possible Category 4 storm.
Forecasters say Dorian will likely slow down considerably as it approaches Florida, allowing for heavy rainfall, dangerous winds and life-threatening storm surge to linger.
The longtime host announced his return to the show in a video on Thursday. It will be his 36th season, but the first since he underwent treatment for Stage IV pancreatic cancer in March.
“I’ve gone through a lot of chemotherapy and thankfully, I’m on the mend and that’s all I can hope for right now,” Trebek, 79, said in the video above.
In May, the game show legend announced he was responding well to treatment and that doctors said he was “near remission.”
A secret cyberattack against Iran in June wiped out a critical database used by Iran’s paramilitary arm to plot attacks against oil tankers and degraded Tehran’s ability to covertly target shipping traffic in the Persian Gulf, at least temporarily, according to senior American officials.
Iran is still trying to recover information destroyed in the June 20 attack and restart some of the computer systems — including military communications networks — taken offline, the officials said.
Senior officials discussed the results of the strike in part to quell doubts within the Trump administration about whether the benefits of the operation outweighed the cost — lost intelligence and lost access to a critical network used by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, Iran’s paramilitary forces.

The Chicago Cubs built a lead the New York Mets simply couldn’t overcome Wednesday night. Might’ve done the same in the National League playoff race, too.
Kyle Schwarber hit one of Chicago’s three homers against a stunned Noah Syndergaard, and the Cubs jumped to an early nine-run advantage before closer Craig Kimbrel held off the Mets in the ninth inning for a 10-7 victory.
“We were awesome the first three innings,” Chicago manager Joe Maddon said.
Nicholas Castellanos and Ian Happ also took Syndergaard (9-7) deep in the worst start of the 2016 All-Star’s career. Syndergaard allowed 10 runs and three homers — both his most in the majors — and was pulled after three miserable innings the day before his 27th birthday.
