Yogi Berra, the beloved baseball player who became known as much for mind-bending aphorisms like “It ain’t over till it’s over” as for his Hall of Fame career as a catcher, has died, Major League Baseball announced Wednesday. He was 90.
Berra, a fixture of 10 New York Yankees world championship teams who won three MVP awards and later managed pennant-winners for the Mets and Yankees, died late Tuesday, the league and his charitable organization said.
He played in more World Series games than any other player. But his cultural fame, which was so pronounced that it inspired a cartoon character, Yogi Bear, sprang from his seemingly endless supply of head-scratching catchphrases.

Volkswagen AG said Tuesday that some 11 million diesel vehicles worldwide were fitted with software at the center of a U.S. emissions scandal, and that it is setting aside around 6.5 billion euros ($7.3 billion) to cover the fallout.
In the wake of the company’s statement, the share price of the world’s top-selling carmaker took another battering. In midday trading in Frankfurt, VW’s share price was down another 18.8 percent at 108.45 euros and near a four-year low. The fall comes on top of Monday’s hefty 17 percent decline.
The trigger to the company’s market woes was last Friday’s revelation from the U.S.’s Environmental Protection Agency that VW rigged nearly half a million cars to defeat U.S. smog tests.

Viola Davis won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her lead role as Annalise Keating on “How to Get Away with Murder” at the 67th annual ceremony Sunday night.
“In my dreams, I see a line,” she said, quoting Harriet Tubman. “Over that line, I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line, but I can’t seem to get there no how, I can’t seem to get over that line.”
“The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity,” Davis continued, calling out to Taraji P. Henson and Kerry Washington, who were tearing up in the audience. “You can not win an Emmy for roles that simply are not there.”

A suspect has been arrested in connection with a spate of shootings along a major highway that runs through Arizona, authorities said on Friday.
“We got him! DPS SWAT team is in custody of the individual suspected of I-10 shootings. Apprehended moments ago,” Arizona Governor Doug Ducey said on Twitter.
At a late Friday news conference, law enforcement officials gave few details of the suspect and did not release his name, but said a gun he owned was “forensically linked” to the first four shootings on the highway.

Hawaii and parts of California were on tsunami alert early Thursday after a huge 8.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of north Chile.
It prompted the U.S. Coastguard to urge the public in Hawaii to use “extreme caution” in waters around the main islands. People should prepare for “strong currents and surf throughout the main Hawaii Islands,” they said.
The tsunami was due to start in Hawaii at 3.11 a.m. local time (9.11 a.m. ET) and in California at 4.46 a.m. local time (7.46 a.m. ET), the National Tsunami Warning Center said.

On May 20, about 100 stock analysts gathered in the ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in New Brunswick, New Jersey, to hear good news from top executives at Johnson & Johnson: The company had 10 new drugs in the pipeline that might achieve more than a billion dollars in annual sales.
For 129 years, New Brunswick has served as the headquarters of J&J, America’s seventh most valuable public company. With consumer products from Band-Aids to baby powder, Neutrogena to Rogaine, Listerine to Visine, Aveeno to Tylenol and Sudafed to Splenda, Johnson & Johnson is the biggest and, according to multiple surveys, most admired corporation in the world’s most prosperous industry—healthcare.
But the real money—about 80 percent of its revenue and 91 percent of its profit—comes not from those consumer favorites, but from Johnson & Johnson’s high-margin medical devices: artificial hips and knees, heart stents, surgical tools and monitoring devices; and from still higher-margin prescription drugs targeting Crohn’s disease (Remicade), cancer (Zytiga, Velcade), schizophrenia (Risperdal), diabetes (Invokana), psoriasis (Stelara), migraines (Topamax), heart disease (Xarelto) and attention deficit disorder (Concerta).

NBA Hall of Famer Moses Malone died on Sunday at age 60. The Philadelphia 76ers confirmed the “passing of a legend” in a statement commending the superstar for his contributions to the city and basketball.
The three-time NBA MVP averaged 20.6 points and 12.2 rebounds per game over his 21 seasons playing professional basketball. He was also named the Finals MVP in 1983 while playing with the 76ers, who won the league championship that year.
“It is with a deep sense of sadness that the Sixers family mourns the sudden loss of Moses Malone. It is difficult to express what his contributions to this organization — both as a friend and player — have meant to us, the city of Philadelphia and his faithful fans,” the 76ers said in a statement on Sunday.

A towering construction crane toppled over on Friday during a violent rainstorm in the Saudi city of Mecca, Islam’s holiest site, crashing into the Grand Mosque and killing at least 107 people ahead of the start of the annual hajj pilgrimage later this month.
Images posted by social media users showed a grisly scene, with police and onlookers attending to numerous bodies lying amid pools of blood on the polished mosque floors.
Saudi Arabia’s civil defense authority provided a series of rising casualty numbers on its official Twitter account as ambulances whisked the wounded to area hospitals. As of early Saturday, it said those injured in the disaster numbered 238.
