Scientists say they have detected an atmosphere around an Earth-like planet for the first time.
They have studied a world known as GJ 1132b, which is 1.4-times the size of our planet and lies 39 light years away.
Their observations suggest that the “super-Earth” is cloaked in a thick layer of gasses that are either water or methane or a mixture of both.
The study is published in the Astronomical Journal.
Discovering an atmosphere, and characterising it, is an important step forward in the hunt for life beyond our Solar System.
But it is highly unlikely that this world is habitable: it has a surface temperature of 370C.

Researchers have found a genetic mutation that turns people into Martians — at least when it comes to sleep patterns.
People with the mutation tend to be night owls because it keeps them on a perpetual 24 ½ hour schedule — close to the Martian 24 hour, 39 minute day, researchers reported in the journal Cell.
With their body clocks always running a little longer than everybody else’s, it’s like having perpetual jet lag, the researchers at the Rockefeller University report.
“Carriers of the mutation have longer days than the planet gives them, so they are essentially playing catch-up for their entire lives,” said Alina Patke, who headed up the research effort.

Facebook is launching an educational tool as part of measures it is taking to counter fake news.
For three days, an ad will appear at the top of users’ news feeds linking to advice on “how to spot fake news” and report it.
The campaign, which will be promoted in 14 countries, is “designed to help people become more discerning readers”, the social media firm said.
But experts questioned whether the measure would have any real impact.
“Until Facebook stops rewarding the architects of fake news with huge traffic, this problem will just get worse,” Tom Felle, a lecturer in digital journalism at City University told the BBC.

When President Trump flies in to Palm Beach County, Jorge Gonzalez stays firmly on the ground.
That’s a problem for the 35-year-old because his small business, Skywords Advertising, only really works in the air, and when the president pays a visit he brings a 10-mile no-fly zone with him.
“Every weekend he’s here we have to shut down,” said Mr Gonzalez, who employs three other pilots. “And right now that’s every weekend.”
Since taking office 10 weeks ago, Mr Trump has spent seven weekends at Mar-a-Lago, a sun-kissed coastal expanse in Palm Beach that he bought in 1985 and turned into a private members club. His visits have riled taxpayers and raised concerns over an uneasy mix of business and politics.

It’s not really about the meal at the monthly Conscious Family Dinner, although there is plenty of vegan Indian food. You can spend time in a cuddling sanctuary, sit down with a tarot reader, chat career goals with a life coach or sit in on an acro-yoga sex psychotherapy presentation. And there’s almost always some form of dancing.
But what’s inconspicuously missing is alcohol.
Creator Ben Rolnik says the dinners are about creating a new form of play that facilitates meaningful connections, not the vapid chitchat that often proliferates at cocktail parties or bars.

United States Rep. Maxine Waters has words for the “sexual harassment enterprise” at Fox News, and on Thursday, she shared them with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes on All In.
The pair discussed a number of topics such as Steve Bannon’s removal from the National Security Council, the White House’s lack of credibility — and President Donald Trump’s declaration of support for Bill O’Reilly, the Fox News host recently accused of serial sexual harassment. Here’s what Waters had to say on that score:
It’s coming out of the mouth of a man who has said some horrible things about women. Don’t forget he talked about grabbing women in their private parts, and because he was important he could get away with it. And so they are two of a kind. And so I’m not surprised that he stood up and tried to defend Bill O’Reilly. But it’s all catching up with Bill O’Reilly and that sexual harassment enterprise that they created over there at Fox.

The United States launched a missile strike on Syria Thursday night, NBC News, CNN and Reuters reported.
“A U.S. military official told NBC that 59 tomahawks had been fired, which hit an airfield near Homs,” CNBC said.
The attack is the opening of hostilities by the U.S. against Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad’s government.
Trump confirmed the strike in a brief address to reporters at his Florida home, Mar-a-Lago, where he dined Thursday night with the president of China, Xi Jinping.

An 18-year-old student meticulously planned a mass shooting at her high school in which she intended to die, authorities in Maryland said Monday.
A shotgun, ammunition and bomb-making materials including nails and fireworks were found at Nichole Cevario’s home in Thurmont on Thursday, Frederick County Sheriff Charles Jenkins said at a news conference.
There is no evidence that anyone else was involved, Jenkins said.

President Donald Trump told the Financial Times newspaper on Monday that “something had to be done” about North Korea. This came after Defense Secretary James Mattis said the country “has got to be stopped” and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said military action was “on the table.”
“It does feel more dangerous — I’ll give you three reasons,” according to Adm. James Stavridis, an NBC News analyst and dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in Massachusetts. “One is [Kim’s] own precarious situation in command of the nation. Number two is the instability in South Korea. We’ve just seen the South Korean president indicted, arrested, and incarcerated.”
“And, number three, a new and more aggressive American foreign policy coming from Washington,” he added.

A suspected chemical attack killed dozens of people in a rebel-held area of Syria on Tuesday, activists said, describing an incident that would mark one of the worst of its kind in Syria’s six-year civil war.
At least 58 people, including 11 children, died in the incident in northern Idlib province, southwest of Aleppo, said the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The death toll “is expected to rise” because more than 160 people were injured, many experiencing severe symptoms, the group added.
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters that the chemical attack is “reprehensible and cannot be ignored by the civilized world.”
