Nearly three-quarters of Americans say they want an independent, non-partisan commission instead of Congress to investigate Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election, according to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
Seventy-three percent of respondents prefer the independent investigation, versus 16 percent who pick Congress.
Still, a majority of Americans — 54 percent — believe that Congress should investigate whether there was contact between the Russian government and the Trump campaign, which is essentially unchanged from February’s NBC/WSJ poll.

First 100 days are hard. Just ask Bill Clinton.
The 42nd president entered office without a popular mandate after winning just 43% of the vote in a three-way race with President George H.W. Bush and Ross Perot. He enjoyed a Democratic House and Senate, but soon found himself stymied by internal divisions and Republican opposition. He was slow to fill out his administration while his top aides argued over how best to right the ship.
When Bill Clinton hit the 100-day marker that the press has used to judge presidents since President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal, the reviews were brutal. His own budget director, Leon Panetta, warned he must do “a better job of picking and choosing the battles he wants to go through.”
All of this might sound familiar to President Donald Trump, who has struggled with many of the same problems in his first 100 days.
“This is the worst, least successful, first 100 days since it became a concept in 1933,” Jonathan Alter, an MSNBC analyst and author of “The Defining Moment: FDR’s Hundred Days and the Triumph of Hope,” said.

A compound found in the protective slime of an Indian frog blows apart flu viruses and might become a powerful new drug to treat influenza, researchers reported Tuesday.
The compound, a small structure called a peptide, cured mice of killer doses of human flu, the research team reported in the journal Immunity.
They hope to develop it and other compounds like it into antiviral drugs to treat people.
“This peptide kills the viruses. It kind of blows them up,” Joshy Jacob of Emory University, who led the study team, told NBC News.
And it seems harmless to healthy tissue. “There’s no collateral damage,” he said.
The team found the peptide in mucus taken from the skin of a frog species called Hydrophylax bahuvistara, found only recently in India.

They know that vaccines have saved tens of millions of lives and that climate change is not only real and worsened by people, but that it threatens our homes and livelihoods.
On Saturday, scientists and their supporters are getting their day in the limelight with the global March for Science, which grew out of the unexpectedly successful Women’s March at the end of January.
As with the Women’s March, social media helped fuel the enthusiasm, with Twitter hashtags like #marchforscience and a Facebook page with half a million likes.
It’s spawned 609 satellite marches around the U.S. and across the world, organizers say. But the main event is in Washington, D.C., and most of the marchers don’t hesitate to say their outrage and disbelief about political changes have compelled them to speak out.

US surgeon general Vivek H Murthy was on Friday dismissed by the Trump administration, and replaced by his deputy, Rear Admiral Sylvia Trent-Adams.
“Today, Murthy, the leader of the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, was asked to resign from his duties as Surgeon General after assisting in a smooth transition into the new Trump administration,” the US Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement.
“Murthy has been relieved of his duties as Surgeon General and will continue to serve as a member of the Commissioned Corps,” it further read.
Murthy, an Obama administration holdover, was the 19th surgeon general and the first Indian American to head the corps.

U.S. President Donald Trump waded into France’s presidential election on Friday, tweeting that he expected the killing of a policeman in central Paris to have an impact on Sunday’s vote.
Islamic State claimed responsibility for the fatal shooting late on Thursday of a French policeman on the Champs Elysees by a French national who lived in Paris.
“Another terrorist attack in Paris. The people of France will not take much more of this. Will have a big effect on presidential election!” Trump said on Twitter.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Trump said he thought the attack would “probably help” Le Pen. While both Trump and the White House made it clear that he was not endorsing Le Pen, he told the AP she would be “the candidate who is “strongest on borders, and she’s the strongest on what’s been going on in France.”
The attack prompted far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen to say on Friday that France should reinstate border checks and expel foreigners who are on the watch lists of intelligence services.

The state of Arkansas executed death row inmate Ledell Lee late Thursday, its first death sentence in more than a decade and the first of four inmates scheduled to die before the end of the month when a crucial lethal injection drug is set to expire.
The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear five last-minute appeals by Lee’s attorneys to stay his execution, which began at 11:44 p.m. CT (12:44 a.m. ET). Lee was pronounced dead at 11:56 p.m., Arkansas Department of Correction Director Wendy Kelly said.
Lee, 51, was sentenced to death in October 1995 in Pulaski County, Arkansas, for the murder of 26-year-old Debra Reese.

5 reasons Earth Day is more important now than ever, amazon, business, Business News, current-events, Future, Hotels, human-rights, medicine, mental-health, Mic.com, research, Science, Science News, technology, Technology News, travel, vacation

Saturday’s annual Earth Day celebration comes at a pivotal moment for a number of global environmental issues.
This year marks the 47th annual Earth Day event, which began on April 22, 1970. According to the campaign’s estimate, more than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day festivities every year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.
Environment and pollution-related issues continue to make headlines in the weeks leading up to Earth Day, with major environmental crises across the planet.
The Guardian on Monday published its report on a new climate change study stating that unless global fossil fuel output is substantially curbed soon, by the mid 21st century human beings will have achieved a climate change rate not seen for the last 50 million years, back when the Ice Age came to an end.
The effects of this unprecedented rise in temperature continue to be felt around the globe, including the coastal U.S. In South Florida communities like Broward County, ocean water routinely flows up drainage pipes and into the streets during seasonal high tides, the Sun Sentinel reported.
