A fire at a Pennsylvania home operating as a day care center killed five children, according to authorities.
The fire occurred at a home in the town of Erie early Sunday morning, Fire Chief Guy Santone told CBS affiliate WSEE-TV. Fire officials said they pulled seven people out of the home, but were unable to revive the five children.
The home’s address is listed on the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership as a 24-hour child care center called Harris Family Day Care, according to the network. Santone said the day care owner was injured in the fire and flown to UPMC Mercy hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment.
Four of the five children who died in the fire were staying at the day care while their parents were working overnight, their grandmother told the Erie Times-News. Valerie Lockett-Slupski said that her grandchildren were two boys and two girls.

The 2019 Women’s Lacrosse Under 19 World Championships just took place in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.
The Israeli team played Kenya on August 6th in the second round and defeated them 13-4.
But something was amiss.
Each and every member of the Israeli team was…hurt….would be the most apt word…that their Kenyan opponents didn’t have adequate footgear.
Not one had cleats, which every member of every team uses as required equipment.
Required if you want to win against a team of equal caliber.
They slipped and slid and the Israelis knew that the two teams weren’t on equal footing (pun too easy not to use).

Simone Biles just can’t stop flipping herself into the record books.
On Saturday at the 2019 U.S. Gymnastics Championship in Kansas City, Missouri, the five-time Olympic medalist made history, becoming the first gymnast to land a double-twisting, double somersault dismount from the balance beam in a match.
She did herself one better on Sunday, becoming the first woman to perfect the triple-twist, double-flip move in her first pass on floor.The 22-year-old had tried the move in preliminaries on Friday and didn’t exactly nail it. After shorting on the triple-twist, double-flip, she told ESPN: “I still get really frustrated because I know how good I am and how well I can do. So I just want to do the best routine for the audience and for myself out here.”

A Las Vegas man who once claimed he was protecting his neighborhood while patrolling on foot with an assault rifle has been arrested and charged with plotting to carry out an attack on a synagogue or LGBTQ bar in the city.
Conor Climo, 23, allegedly sent encrypted messages to white supremacists this year discussing a possible attack using Molotov cocktails and other improvised explosives, federal officials said Friday.
Climo told the FBI he had also been looking at creating an eight-man “sniper platoon” to conduct a shooting attack against Jews, court documents said, a plan he said he had been considering for two years. The 23-year-old also claimed he was trying to recruit a homeless person to conduct surveillance on a possible target, according to the complaint.

That was the tenor of the official story the White House rolled out in December 2017, announcing the Presidential commutation of the sentence of Sholom Rubashkin, the former CEO of America’s largest kosher meat processing plant who was convicted in 2009 of a series of fraud charges. Rubashkin’s legal troubles began in 2008, when a federal immigration raid, similar to the one just completed across Mississippi, discovered nearly 400 undocumented workers at his plant in Iowa.

But it wasn’t Pelosi or Dershowitz who convinced Trump to give clemency to Rubashkin. It was the persistence of his son-in-law Jared Kushner, according to the impression of three former officials close to the issue. It was Kushner, they say, who brought the Rubashkin case up to a dispassionate Trump several times in the summer and fall of 2017, before finally persuading him to make what would be his first commutation and only his second act of clemency.

An Ohio family using a home DNA test found that their 25-year-old daughter is not related to her father, according to a lawsuit they filed against a hospital and two fertility practices.
Joe Cartellone said his family made the discovery earlier this year after buying an Ancestry DNA kit to learn more about their Italian heritage, the family’s lawsuit filed Wednesday in the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas said.
“I never would have imagined the Christmas gift of a home DNA kit would unveil this kind of abuse of our trust,” Cartellone told reporters this week. “It’s hard to explain the shock and agony when you find out someone you love and care for — your own daughter — is not genetically related to you.”

Over the years, the social experiment developed into a self-contained society that, though it rejected state control, lived in tolerable harmony with the rest of the city. Still at core an anarchist community, Christiania remains a place where drugs are freely sold and consumed without overt interference from the police — a weed-smoking Disneyland.

UPDATE (August 10, 2019, 10 a.m.): Jeffrey Epstein was found dead of an apparent suicide on the morning of Saturday, August 10 at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York.
It was December 2010, and Jeffrey Epstein was sitting down for dinner with some of his famous friends — personalities who spanned the TV dial from morning to late night. There was George Stephanopoulos, then the host of Good Morning America, CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric, and E! comedian and late-night host Chelsea Handler. It was 18 months after Epstein had been released from “prison” (in reality, he spent six days a week working in an office during his year-plus work-release stay in a Florida jail) for pleading guilty to a lesser charge of solicitation of prostitution with a minor.
Accused of far worse, Epstein pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of solicitation of prostitution with a minor. The dinner also took place less than a year after Epstein settled “at least a dozen civil lawsuits … filed by women who allege they were molested by Epstein when they were underage,” according to the Miami Herald. It was a mere five months after the registered sex offender finished his probation and was allowed to leave the state of Florida.
