After a drumbeat of transit disasters this year, it became impossible to ignore the failures of the New York City subway system.

A crowded F train stalled in a downtown tunnel, leaving hundreds in the dark without air-conditioning for nearly an hour. As the heat of packed-together bodies fogged the windows, passengers beat on the walls and clawed at the doors in a scene from a real-life horror story.
An explosive Vox report published Monday revealed that New York Times White House correspondent Glenn Thrush has been suspended after being accused of acting inappropriately with several women.
“The behavior attributed to Glenn in this Vox story is very concerning and not in keeping with the standards and values of The New York Times,” Eileen Murphy, the senior vice president of communications for the Times, wrote in a statement to Vox. “We intend to fully investigate and while we do, Glenn will be suspended. We support his decision to enter a substance abuse program. In the meantime, we will not be commenting further.”
Vox’s Laura McGann says she interviewed 40 individuals while reporting the piece, in which she also describes an inappropriate interaction she said she had with Thrush five years ago, when they both worked for Politico.

In a statement, the American Society of Clinical Oncology asked Americans to drink less alcohol.
The group, which includes the nation’s top cancer doctors, cited several years of research that links alcohol — even as little as a glass of wine or beer a day — with cancer.
You can also do certain things to decrease your cancer risk, like getting more exercise.
It’s not every day that a group of the nation’s top cancer doctors asks people to curb their drinking.
In a statement released Tuesday, the American Society of Clinical Oncology outlined research tying alcohol to two types of cancer and told Americans to drink less.
“ASCO believes that a proactive stance by the Society to minimize excessive exposure to alcohol has important implications for cancer prevention,” the statement, which was published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, said.
