Disney announced the full cast for its 2019 live-action remake of “The Lion King” on Wednesday to thunderous roars of approval.
Donald Glover will voice the character of Simba and Beyoncé will voice Nala. James Earl Jones, who was in the original 1994 film, will return to lend his voice as Simba’s father, Mufasa, once more. A trio of comedians, John Oliver, Seth Rogan and Billy Eichner, will play Zazu, Pumbaa and Timon, respectively.
Many of the original songs are expected to return, according to reports, and the film will be a live-action remake similar to what Disney has done with “The Jungle Book,” which was released last year and went on to become a box office smash grossing nearly $1 billion worldwide.
The film, directed by Jon Favreau, will be released in the summer of 2019.

The singer doesn’t have to say a thing to loom over the culture.
Not long ago, a tattoo shop in Brooklyn got a bad review on Yelp. A customer was angry — not about his new ink, but about the soundtrack that accompanied his trip there.
“Why are you playing Sade,” he wrote, inserting an expletive. This was music he found fit for “a plastic surgeon’s waiting room,” not a cool tattoo parlor.
One can sort of understand where he was coming from.
Before record stores neared extinction, Sade was often stocked in the easy listening section. The band’s breakout success in the 1980s owed much to the advent of adult contemporary radio, where huge hits like “Smooth Operator” and “The Sweetest Taboo” eventually got sandwiched between selections from Michael Bolton and Kenny G.
But then and now, Sade had an appeal that lifted it far above the slush pile of schlock.

His wife Donna Guillaume told CNN he had battled prostate cancer in recent years.
.
“He kinda went the way everyone wishes they could, surrounded by love and in his sleep,” Guillaume said.
.
She added that her husband really loved making music, entertaining and making people laugh. He treasured his role as Rafiki in Disney’s 1994 animated film “The Lion King,” she said.
Guillaume starred as the level-headed butler Benson DuBois on the sitcom “Benson” from 1979 – 1986. He won the Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a comedy for his performance in the role in 1985. Dozens of TV roles followed, including turns on “A Different World” and “Sports Night.”

We both knew this day would finally come: Counting all the broadcast, cable and streaming outlets, there are too many new dramas and comedies in this fall TV season for one critic to digest. I grow more convinced each year that the concept of “fall TV” is outdated (unless you’re buying or selling TV advertising), and this is the year I decided to do something about it. Although I’ve scrutinized close to 40 upcoming shows for this preview, I’m no longer able to write a review of every dang one of them.
Instead, I’m writing about 10 shows that rose to the top of my list. They aren’t perfect (and they might be on channels and outlets you don’t get), but they’re good enough to watch for a few episodes to see if they click. In the past, these 10 shows would have gotten at least a B grade in my annual preview.
And just so neither of us will miss out on the sick pleasure of bad reviews, I’ve also included five shows that had me reaching for the bucket — shows I would have given D’s and F’s. Watch them at your own risk.

Kazuo Ishiguro has won the Nobel Prize in literature, the Swedish Academy announced Thursday.
The British novelist, born in Japan, is best known for his novel “The Remains of the Day” (1989). The judges praised Ishiguro as a writer “who, in novels of great emotional force, has uncovered the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world.”
Sara Danius, permanent secretary of the academy, said immediately after the announcement: “If you mix Jane Austen and Kafka, you have Ishiguro — but you have to add a little bit of Marcel Proust into the mix, and then you stir, but not too much, and then you have his writings. He’s developed an aesthetic universe all his own. He is exploring what you have to forget in order to survive in the first place as an individual or as a society.”

Record-setting Emmy winner and “Veep” star Julia Louis-Dreyfus has breast cancer.
The actress revealed the diagnosis Thursday in a tweet sent to her approximately 748,000 followers. The post also included her thoughts on health care access.
“1 in 8 women get breast cancer. Today, I’m the one,” her post read. “The good news is that I have the most glorious group of supportive and caring family and friends, and fantastic insurance through my union. The bad news is that not all women are so lucky, so let’s fight all cancers and make universal health care a reality.”

The investigation into Russian meddling during the 2016 presidential election features a cast of what by now are household names: Donald J. Trump, Vladimir V. Putin, Paul J. Manafort and Robert S. Mueller III.
A two-minute video posted online this week added another well-known — albeit unlikely — name to that lineup: Morgan Freeman.
Mr. Freeman, the actor whose low-pitched voice exudes authority and is readily recognizable from scores of movies and narrations, has antagonized some Russian officials for his appearance in the video, which was posted by the Committee to Investigate Russia, a new group that seeks to raise awareness about Russia’s involvement in the election.

It feels like everyone comes out of mother! with a different takeaway, and that’s one of the most intriguing things about it. This is a film that sparks discussion by opening itself up to all sorts of interpretations.
But if you’re curious what its own creator, writer-director Darren Aronofsky, thinks it’s about, you’ve come to the right place.
Aronofsky’s been hitting the press circuit in promotion of his new movie, which stars Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem as a couple disturbed by a couple of unexpected visitors. There’s a lot (a lot) more to it than that, and the filmmaker’s been happy to discuss exactly what it all means. Well, what most of it means.

This is us, up to our eyeballs in great television, and grateful for the distraction. Host Stephen Colbert stuck to this theme in his jaunty opening musical number at Sunday’s exuberant 69th Primetime Emmy Awards show on CBS. “My HBO Go password is SEXBOT 1-2-3,” he sang. “The world’s a little better on TV.”
He was joined in cameo appearances from the likes of Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tony Hale of “Veep,” along with a dancing kick line of chorus girls in “Handmaid’s Tale” robes and bonnets. The overall message this Emmy night? Hey, America, there’s never been a better time to tune out reality by tuning into — and collapsing into the comfort of — your multiple TV screens. Unload your anxieties by sticking to the couch. It’s an embarrassment of riches, luring even the biggest schtars into its fold.
