Here’s How to Get Stronger After 50

It’s no secret that our bodies change as we age. Muscle mass and strength decline, it takes longer to recover from hard efforts, and our capacity to handle high training volumes can diminish. On top of that, mobility decreases and we become more prone to certain injuries. When an older athlete stops training, their fitness deteriorates significantly quicker than it did when they were young—and building it back is much harder.

Your training needs don’t change as you get older. You still want to build cardiovascular capacity, strength, and functional mobility. But the way you approach those goals needs to be tailored to the individual, depending on your current fitness level, injury state, and other lifestyle factors. We asked two experts how your training regimen should evolve as you age.

This Gen X Mess

.

Like many things considered “cool,” Gen X is pretty exclusive. You had to be born between 1965 and 1980 to get in to this gloomy, goofy club of forgotten middle children, and only about 65 million of us were. (Both boomers, at 75 million, and millennials, at 83 million, far outnumber us.)

The idea behind that “X” was about coming between. Gen X supposedly didn’t know what they were, or what they wanted. All they knew, they were told, was what they didn’t want — marriage, money, success — and then they shrugged and popped a Prozac.

As “Reality Bites” celebrates its 25th anniversary; as groups like Bikini Kill, Wu-Tang Clan and Hootie & the Blowfish reunite for tours; as generational idols like Ani DiFranco and Liz Phair publish memoirs; and as the first real Gen X candidates make a run for president, Gen X is in the air.

Columbine school shooting 20 years later: Victims’ families reflect on what has changed and what hasn’t

Twenty years later, Dawn Anna still saves a seat for her daughter, Lauren Townsend, when she goes to the movies, knowing full well that she won’t show.

Twenty years later, Frank DeAngelis’ morning mantra consists of reciting the names of 12 students and a teacher he will never see again.

Twenty years later, Tom Mauser literally walks in the size 10½ shoes of his slain son, Daniel, whenever he’s called on to speak about the unspeakable.

For them and for too many others, the massacre at Columbine High School is both past and ever-present, a wound that never really heals because every time somebody with a high-powered weapon unleashes a bloodbath at a school, the scab gets ripped off.

Their Parents Stayed Together ‘For The Kids.’ Here’s How It Felt.

.

There has been significant research exploring the emotional effect of divorce on younger children, but relatively little is known about what the decision to divorce as soon as grown children leave home does — on top of how those children have already been shaped by their parents’ marriage for years.

Some parents wait to divorce until their children are grown because they are determined not to split up in their formative years or when they are teenagers, which is already an emotionally tumultuous time. Other empty nesters suddenly come face-to-face with the prospect of decades with a partner they’d grown apart from, particularly given our increased life expectancy.

No matter the reasons why they stuck it out, there are reasons to look closely at the effect of divorce on older children. Divorce rates in the United States are declining except among adults 50 and older. The divorce rate for that demographic has basically doubled since the 1990s, which means the number of Americans who were older children or adults when their parents split is also on the rise.

Consolidation is the best way forward for India’s struggling aviation sector

.

India’s turbulent aviation sector may be entering a long-pending phase of consolidation.

On Oct. 18, media reports suggested that cash-strapped private airline Jet Airways may soon be rescued by the Tata Group, India’s storied salt-to-software conglomerate.

“If this (the Tata-Jet deal) happens, then it will consolidate two to three large players,” said Peeyush Pandey, a partner at Deloitte.

However, the reports also suggested that the discussions have failed to make much headway as the question of Jet’s management control is a sticking point. The deal’s success will depend on whether chairman Naresh Goyal, who owns a 51% stake in the company, is willing to relinquish control 25 years after founding the company.

Aside from Lion Air, these are all the airlines that have Boeing 737 Max planes

The Boeing 737 Max—once the darling of the aviation industry—has come under scrutiny since Lion Air flight JT610 crashed into the Java Sea in October 2018. That was followed by the crash of Ethiopian Airlines flight ET 302 in March.

The Lion Air accident, which killed all 189 on board, was the first for the 737 Max 8, and involved a plane in use for just two months. The aircraft, which was inducted into fleets in 2017, was supposed to be a “game changer” and the “short-haul plane of the future,” but investigators uncovered problems with the plane as they try to unravel what went wrong.

As a grocery chain is dismantled, investors recover their money. Worker pensions are short millions.

Once the Marsh Supermarkets chain began to falter a few years ago, its owner, a private-equity firm, began selling off the vast retail empire, piece by piece. The company sold more than 100 convenience stores. It sold the pharmacies. It closed some of the 115 grocery stores, having previously auctioned off their real estate. Then, in May 2017, the company announced the closure of the remaining 44 stores.

Marsh Supermarkets, founded in 1931, had at last filed for bankruptcy.

“It was a long, slow decline,” said Amy Gerken, formerly an assistant office manager at one of the stores. Sun Capital Partners, the private-equity firm that owned Marsh, “didn’t really know how grocery stores work. We’d joke about them being on a yacht without even knowing what a UPC code is. But they didn’t treat employees right, and since the bankruptcy, everyone is out for their blood.”
