An official at the California Labor Commission has taken an axe to Uber’s claim that its drivers are really independent operators and not employees of the tech company.
In an opinion filed in state court Tuesday — and posted here by TechCrunch’s Jordan Crook — Stephanie Barrett, a deputy labor commissioner, challenged the business model that now undergirds much of the transportation industry as well as the so-called sharing economy. In the case, an Uber driver named Barbara Ann Berwick argued the company owed her money for costs she incurred while driving customers around in the car she owned.
In a normal employment relationship, those costs are borne by the boss, not the worker. But Uber considers Berwick an independent contractor, an increasingly common arrangement that shifts certain business expenses onto those doing the work. By using independent contractors, Uber not only doesn’t have to buy SUVs and gasoline, it doesn’t have to worry about payroll taxes or workers’ compensation costs.
Dylann Roof’s roommate says the suspect was planning something big leading up to the alleged shooting at a South Carolina church Wednesday that left nine people dead.
Dalton Tyler told ABC News that he’d known Roof for at least seven months, and that the 21-year-old was “planning something like that for six months.”
ABC reports:
“He was big into segregation and other stuff,” Tyler said. “He said he wanted to start a civil war. He said he was going to do something like that and then kill himself.”
Tyler said he met Roof, a Lexington, South Carolina native, through a good friend. He also said Roof’s parents, with whom he said the suspect was “on and off,” had previously bought him a gun but never allowed him to take it with him until this past week.
Nine people were shot to death by a white man at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, on Wednesday night — rocking a nation already grappling with institutional racism and race-related violence.
The gunman entered the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church during a weekly Bible study meeting and opened fire around 9 p.m. Eight people were found dead at the scene, police said. Two others were transported to a hospital, where one later died.
The suspect, named as 21-year-old Dylann Roof, was captured Thursday morning in Shelby, North Carolina, according to Attorney General Loretta Lynch. According to Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen, Roof was arrested during a traffic stop.

Hearing more chatter — either at home or at work, or both — about work/life balance?
You’re not alone.
While the concept of a balance between your work and your play has been around for decades, more companies today, especially startups, are putting work/life balance at the forefront of their recruiting.
As new policies enter the workplace, employees are also engineering their own methods to balance their careers and social lives.
Before, after, morning or night actually doesn’t matter. As long as you do it at least once every day, you’re going to minimize the nasty bacteria clinging to your teeth, says Matthew J. Messina an American Dental Association spokesperson and private practice dentist in Cleveland.
“I am happy if people floss at any time in a 24 hour period, says Messina.”The bacteria around the teeth organize themselves as colonies and [flossing] stirs them up. If we get in there and stir them up every 24 hours we render them less dangerous.”
The American Dental Association recommends that people floss daily and brush twice a day.
This is a list of the top ten places to visit in Rome. (My opinion)
If you want let me know what are your favourite spots in Rome. 🙂
1. The Colloseum
Of course as the most famous sight of Rome and it’s landmark the colloseum is my number one place to go.
It’s a beautiful place where you can just take a break sit down enjoy the colloseum and the surrouding. It’s also worth going inside (you better pay a skip the line ticket) and if you go upstairs you’ve got a beautiful view over the whole place.
2. The Roman Forum
This is a really cool place it’s located only a few footsteps from the colloseum and totally worth visiting. It shows the ancient buildings and remains of the once so big Roman Empire.
3. The Trevi Fountain
Just a really beautiful, huge fountain located in the center…
For those who are old enough to have seen the original series of Jurassic Park (22 years ago), you’ll know Jurassic world is the fourth film of the series whose theme entertains the idea of human beings walking among creatures that are not suited to walk with man. While I enjoyed the originals, I thought Jurassic World was a bit watered down in comparison. It seems as though the world still hasn’t gotten the message. Man and dinosaurs cannot co-exist. Having said that, Jurassic World explores man’s continuance to violate the importance of life for the greed of power and money. The story is updated to reflect our modern day hungers but has not provided any better safety precautions nor any preventative measures to safeguard the island from natural disasters, should one occur. Isla Nublar is the same island where these creatures have lived for over 22 years. In…
The 40-year wait is over. Say goodbye to the interminable misery and despair and shame that has haunted the Warriors and their fans for decades.
They’re champions.
The. Warriors. Are. Champions.
A 105-97 victory over the Cavaliers in Game 6 of the NBA Finals Tuesday night at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland punctuated the best season in franchise history and gave the Warriors their first title since 1975,
The Warriors were too deep, too good and, ultimately, too relentless for the pesky but undermanned Cavaliers.
A remote galaxy shining with the light of more than 300 trillion suns has been discovered using data from NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). The galaxy is the most luminous galaxy found to date and belongs to a new class of objects recently discovered by WISE — extremely luminous infrared galaxies, or ELIRGs.
“We are looking at a very intense phase of galaxy evolution,” said Chao-Wei Tsai of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, lead author of a new report appearing in the May 22 issue of The Astrophysical Journal. “This dazzling light may be from the main growth spurt of the galaxy’s black hole.”
The brilliant galaxy, known as WISE J224607.57-052635.0, may have a behemoth black hole at its belly, gorging itself on gas. Supermassive black holes draw gas and matter into a disk around them, heating the disk to…
