Wheelchair users may soon have greater freedom of movement than ever before with the development of a new chair equipped not just with wheels but legs as well. Invented by scientists at Japan’s Chiba Institute of Technology, the chair is being prepared for commercial sale by the end of next year. Rob Muir reports.

Scientists in London have developed an algorithm-based decoder system that enables wheelchair users to move around simply by looking to where they wish to travel. The researchers at Imperial College London say the system is inexpensive and easy to use and could transform the lives of people who are unable to use their limbs.
Algorithms working with inexpensive software could help quadriplegics steer wheelchairs simply by looking in their desired direction of travel. An Imperial College London team says their newly devised system can read eye movements to tell if a person is merely gazing or wants to move. Co-designer and student Kirubin Pillay says it’s simple to use.

Freedom From What Others Think

In this life-affirming video, Sue Austin goes where few have been… in her wheelchair. Refusing to be defined by pity or limitations, she proves that we can’t let ourselves be defined by how other people see us — and that telling our own story sets us free.

One major issue facing transportation is accessibility, especially for those in wheelchairs. From public to personal transit, a wheelchair presents unique mobility challenges. Sure, it’s possible to outfit existing vehicles for wheelchair accessibility, but the process is expensive and doesn’t always yield a complete, integrated solution. That’s where Kenguru changes things. The Kenguru is an electric vehicle with no seats, that allows drivers to control the car from their wheelchair. We went to Pflugerville, Texas to try it out.
