When Carnegie Mellon professor Howie Choset watches his students take tests, he’s certainly impressed with their ability to solve complex engineering problems. But what really fascinates him is the way they can effortlessly twirl a pencil around their fingers.
That’s because the most mundane things humans can do with their hands — whether it’s writing something down, grabbing an egg out of its carton, or picking an awkwardly stacked book off the shelf — are still big challenges for robots built by engineers like Choset.
“Manipulation, in many ways, is one of the final frontiers in robotics,” he says.
Robots hold a lot of promise as our future factory workers, warehouse stockers, and personal assistants. But the android takeover likely won’t happen until robots have hands as dextrous as ours. While robotic grippers and graspers already exist to pick up specific objects in controlled settings, a robot hand that’s as versatile as a human one is still just out of reach.

Two blasts targeting Egyptian churches on Palm Sunday killed at least 38 people and wounded more than 100, according to Health Ministry officials.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi on Sunday evening declared a three-month state of emergency after the blasts rocked two churches, killing dozens.
The first attack hit the St. George Church, packed with worshipers in the Nile Delta town of Tanta, north of the Egyptian capital, killing at least 27 people and wounding 78 others, authorities said.

It’s Albert Einstein’s weirdest prediction — that the universe is sprinkled with massive objects so dense that not even light can escape them. Although Einstein was skeptical the theory was true, it has held for over a century. Today, astronomers are fairly convinced that nearly every galaxy (including our own) harbors a black hole so massive that it gobbles down any nearby gas and dust, often ripping stars to shreds. And while no one has seen a black hole directly, astronomers might finally be on the brink of doing just that.
For the next 10 days, eight radio observatories at six locations across the globe will be pointed toward the supermassive black hole that hides in the Milky Way’s center. Should the weather cooperate at these observatories — which span the peak of the world’s tallest volcano in Hawaii, the frigid landscape at the South Pole, and the ski-covered slopes of the Sierra Nevada in Spain — astronomers will collect data at a scale never attempted before in physics.

It’s a busy time for Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system.
On March 28, NASA released stunning new photos of Jupiter taken by Juno, the basketball court-sized space probe that’s been orbiting the gas giant since last July. And on April 7, Jupiter will make its closest approach to Earth this year, coming to within about 414 million miles of our home planet and appearing extraordinarily bright in the night sky.
Jupiter will rise in the East around sunset and will be visible all night, weather permitting.
No special equipment is needed to enjoy this Jovian close-up, a phenomenon astronomers call Jupiter “at opposition” because the planet and the sun are on opposite sides of Earth. But if you have binoculars, it should be possible to see the massive planet and also its four largest moons: Callisto, Europa, Ganymede, and Io. With even a basic telescope, you should be able to make out Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, a vast storm that’s roughly twice the size of Earth.

Police on Saturday said they had arrested a man from Uzbekistan suspected of plowing a truck into a department store in the Swedish capital, killing four people and injuring 15.
Authorities confirmed that the 39-year-old suspect was known to security services and described him as a “marginal character.” They would not confirm his status in Sweden.
Speaking at a press conference, the head of Sweden’s National police, Dan Eliason, said security officials had found an object in the truck that “could be a bomb or an incendiary object.”

Police launched a manhunt in Sweden’s capital Friday for a suspect who rammed a truck into a department store in a likely act of terrorism — killing four people and injuring 15 others, officials said.
The vehicle plowed into a crowd on Stockholm’s busy Drottninggatan shopping district before barreling into the side of the Ahlens store, the country’s security agency said. Panicked pedestrians and shoppers were caught scrambling for safety.
During a news conference, police said they were seeking a man in a green jacket and hoodie with a mustache and beard.
Swedish National Police told NBC News that one person was arrested in connection with the rampage, but would not immediately say whether he was a suspect or the man they earlier described. Two others were brought in for questioning, but authorities say they are not suspects but may have information.

The National Security Council has presented President Trump with options to respond to North Korea’s nuclear program — including putting American nukes in South Korea or killing dictator Kim Jong-un, multiple top-ranking intelligence and military officials told NBC News.
Both scenarios are part of an accelerated review of North Korea policy prepared in advance of President Donald Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week.
The White House hopes the Chinese will do more to influence Pyongyang through diplomacy and enhanced sanctions. But if that fails, and North Korea continues its development of nuclear weapons, there are other options on the table that would significantly alter U.S. policy.

Researchers have found a genetic mutation that turns people into Martians — at least when it comes to sleep patterns.
People with the mutation tend to be night owls because it keeps them on a perpetual 24 ½ hour schedule — close to the Martian 24 hour, 39 minute day, researchers reported in the journal Cell.
With their body clocks always running a little longer than everybody else’s, it’s like having perpetual jet lag, the researchers at the Rockefeller University report.
“Carriers of the mutation have longer days than the planet gives them, so they are essentially playing catch-up for their entire lives,” said Alina Patke, who headed up the research effort.

When President Trump flies in to Palm Beach County, Jorge Gonzalez stays firmly on the ground.
That’s a problem for the 35-year-old because his small business, Skywords Advertising, only really works in the air, and when the president pays a visit he brings a 10-mile no-fly zone with him.
“Every weekend he’s here we have to shut down,” said Mr Gonzalez, who employs three other pilots. “And right now that’s every weekend.”
Since taking office 10 weeks ago, Mr Trump has spent seven weekends at Mar-a-Lago, a sun-kissed coastal expanse in Palm Beach that he bought in 1985 and turned into a private members club. His visits have riled taxpayers and raised concerns over an uneasy mix of business and politics.
