Trump declared that an “eight-year assault” on gun ownership rights had come to a “crashing end” with his election.
He vowed to press forward on his plan to construct a border wall, despite setbacks in securing funding for the project or convincing Mexico to pay for it.
.
And after regaling the crowd with a retelling of his Election Night victory, he revived a campaign trail insult of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who he suggested was plotting to challenge him in 2020.

United Airlines just reached a settlement with Dr. David Dao, the passenger who was violently dragged off a flight earlier this month in an incident that created a firestorm for the company.
Dao’s lawyers announced the deal Thursday, but did not disclose the financial terms of the settlement.
The announcement includes praise for United (UAL) CEO Oscar Munoz from Thomas Demetrio, one of Dao’s lawyers.
“Mr. Munoz said he was going to do the right thing, and he has,” he said. “In addition, United has taken full responsibility for what happened…without attempting to blame others, including the City of Chicago.”

President Donald Trump has made little progress on some of his key campaign promises in his first 100 days as president.
Of the 10 core goals for his presidency tracked by NBC News, Trump made progress on two, faltered on four, and did little or nothing on the rest.
Trump’s tangible progress is mostly confined to headline-grabbing executive orders that tackle parts of his promises from the campaign by undertaking regulatory or administrative reviews, or green lighting permits.
“I don’t think there’s any question that the president has done a significant amount on the issues that he put forward in the campaign,” White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters ahead of the 100-day mark, touting “a record number” of executive orders. “We are very proud.”

The event opened with the first daughter explaining her role in the White House.
.
“You are first daughter — German audience not familiar — what is your role — to whom are you represented? Your father, the American people, or your business,” asked Miriam Meckel, editor of German business magazine Wirtschaftswoche.
“Well, certainly not the latter, and I am rather unfamiliar with this role as well, as it is quite new to me,” replied Trump, a top adviser to her father. “It has been a little under 100 days, but it is just been a remarkable, an incredible journey.”

Demme won consistent acclaim as the director of such diverse movies as the Talking Heads concert film “Stop Making Sense”; “Philadelphia,” the 1993 drama starring Tom Hanks as a lawyer battling AIDS; and “Beloved,” the 1998 Oprah Winfrey movie based on Toni Morrison’s bestseller about a 19th century slave haunted by the ghost of her daughter.
.
But it’s “Silence of the Lambs” for which he was best known. The 1991 movie, based on Thomas Harris’ novel, swept the Academy Awards the following year, winning Oscars for best picture and its two stars, Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, whose Hannibal Lecter character became a cultural icon. Demme also won the Oscar for best director.

The U.S. just lost a trade battle with Mexico. It’s the first loss of the Trump era.
Mexico and the U.S. have fought for years over tuna. The U.S. insists that any Mexican tuna sold in the U.S. must be “dolphin safe,” meaning dolphins weren’t killed by tuna fisherman, which was once common. Mexico says its fisherman play by the rules. The U.S. government disagrees.
On Tuesday, the World Trade Organization ruled in Mexico’s favor, allowing it to impose trade sanctions worth $163 million a year against the U.S. The WTO says that’s how much money Mexico has lost from the U.S. unfairly penalizing Mexican tuna.
U.S. officials criticized the ruling.
“We are disappointed in the WTO Arbitrator’s decision regarding U.S. dolphin-safe labeling standards,” a spokesperson for the U.S. Trade Representative, a wing of the executive branch, said in a statement.
The Trump administration argues that the WTO ruling didn’t take into account updated US laws on “dolphin safe” tuna, and that it overstated the actual financial loss to Mexican tuna producers, who the USTR accused of intentionally chasing and netting dolphins.

In a description of Trump’s phone calls to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Enrique Peña Nieto, the White House said Trump “agreed not to terminate NAFTA at this time and the leaders agreed to proceed swiftly, according to their required internal procedures, to enable the renegotiation of the NAFTA deal to the benefit of all three countries.”
“It is my privilege to bring NAFTA up to date through renegotiation,” Trump said in a written statement that accompanied the readout of his phone calls. “It is an honor to deal with both President Peña Nieto and Prime Minister Trudeau, and I believe that the end result will make all three countries stronger and better.”
The White House said the phone conversations were “pleasant and productive.”

Bill O’Reilly’s forced exit from Fox News is netting him a payout of up to $25 million, two sources with knowledge confirmed to NBC News.
The former Fox News anchor inked a new four-year contract last month guaranteeing he make that much annually, according to a person with knowledge of that deal. The contract did allow Fox to fire him in general if controversy was harming the network, the person added.
His severance has not been disclosed publicly, but was part of the agreement for him parting ways with parent company 21st Century Fox, New York magazine journalist Gabe Sherman earlier told TODAY.
The media company announced Wednesday it was dropping O’Reilly’s prime-time political punditry show, “The O’Reilly Factor,” amid mounting sexual harassment allegations made by former staffers and guests.
The New York Times revealed earlier this month that O’Reilly and his bosses paid about $13 million to five women in exchange for them not pursuing lawsuits or speaking about their cases.

Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who was born in the US but is of Mexican heritage, was attacked by Trump last year over his handling of a lawsuit against Trump University. Trump claimed Curiel could not impartially hear the case because of his background and Trump’s hardline immigration policies. The case was eventually settled.
.
Now, Curiel is assigned to hear the case of Juan Manuel Montes Bojorquez, 23, who his lawyers allege was deported from California to Mexico earlier this year despite having active protection under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, also known as DACA.
