The three people — whose names and ages have not been released — died Friday as supplies were being thrown from relief trucks on the road in the Balukhali Pan Bazar near the Kutupalong refugee camp, the Inter Sector Coordination Group (ISCG) in Bangladesh said.
.
The deaths are a stark reminder of the desperation in the camps near the border with Myanmar, where an estimated 409,000 refugees have arrived since August 25, more than doubling the existing Rohingya refugee population.
.
“I could not bring anything. My clothes were given to me by someone here,” said Rohingya refugee Romiza Begum. “I lost everything. There is nothing left in my home in Myanmar. Everything is destroyed.”
The exodus began after Rohingya militants killed 12 security officials at border posts in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, resulting in an intensified government “clearance operation.” Amnesty International has accused Myanmar’s military of deliberately torching Muslim-minority Rohingya villages near the Bangladesh border in a campaign of “ethnic cleansing.” The government says it is targeting terrorists.

This is us, up to our eyeballs in great television, and grateful for the distraction. Host Stephen Colbert stuck to this theme in his jaunty opening musical number at Sunday’s exuberant 69th Primetime Emmy Awards show on CBS. “My HBO Go password is SEXBOT 1-2-3,” he sang. “The world’s a little better on TV.”
He was joined in cameo appearances from the likes of Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tony Hale of “Veep,” along with a dancing kick line of chorus girls in “Handmaid’s Tale” robes and bonnets. The overall message this Emmy night? Hey, America, there’s never been a better time to tune out reality by tuning into — and collapsing into the comfort of — your multiple TV screens. Unload your anxieties by sticking to the couch. It’s an embarrassment of riches, luring even the biggest schtars into its fold.

The storm, which could bring rain and wind to the northeastern United States later this week, had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and was 640 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, according to the hurricane center.

Jose remains out in the Atlantic Ocean and is moving toward the northwest, and that motion will bring it closer to the United States through the weekend. Just how far it moves west before turning to the north will tell forecasters a great deal about the likelihood of whether it will make landfall somewhere along the eastern US coastline.

Special relativity teaches us that the three dimensions of space and the solitary dimension of time are woven together like a fabric. It’s impossible to think of them as separate entities, only a singular unified entity — space-time. We can’t think of motion through space without being mindful of motion through time, and vice versa. Left-right, up-down, back-forth and past-future are all on equal footing.
And yet, time does seem a little different. We have complete freedom of movement within space, but we cannot avoid our future. Time seems to have an “arrow,” whereas the spatial dimensions are ambidextrous. Given the unity between time and space, it leads to the obvious question: Is time travel, of any sort, possible? Under any circumstances? At all? [How Time Travel Works in Science Fiction (Infographic)]

With the angry glare of the public eye squarely focused on Equifax after announcing a massive breach, the company is waiving fees on credit freezes. Which is good news because it’s the only thing that’s going to save your bacon.
The company had previously offered victims a free year of credit report monitoring — but customers and advocates were quick to point out that this wouldn’t actually stop anyone’s identity from getting exploited. Hackers would still be able to open up new credit cards and go on spending sprees, apply for other loans or mortgages, and leave you holding the bag for the debt or the bad name.
Equifax announced the move on Twitter in reply to a customer tweet — which has less visibility than a new standalone tweet and would only be seen by people reading the comment thread or following a link.
But, however muted the trumpet heralding was, it’s still good news.

“I’m facing a challenge, but I’ve faced other challenges,” McCain said. “And I’m very confident about getting through this one as well.”
.
The Arizona Republican, who was diagnosed with brain cancer in July, said he will receive a magnetic resonance imaging test on Monday and expressed optimism about his condition.
“I’m fine,” McCain told anchor Jake Tapper. “The prognosis is pretty good. Look, this is a very vicious form of cancer that I’m facing, but all the results so far are excellent.”
.
McCain returned to Washington as the Senate came back from its August recess last week, and he said he planned to focus in the coming week on a key defense bill.

The Supreme Court granted Tuesday a Trump administration request to continue to bar most refugees under its travel ban.
Without comment, the court blocked a federal appeals court ruling from last week that would have exempted refugees who have a contractual commitment from resettlement organizations from the travel ban while the justices consider its legality. The ruling could impact roughly 24,000 people.
.
The travel ban bars certain people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen from entering the US.
.
The issue concerning the scope of the travel ban has been ricocheting through the courts since last spring when the Supreme Court allowed Trump’s ban to go into effect except for those with a “bona fide” relationship to the United States. The order might give hope to supporters of the ban, but it may also simply reflect a desire on the part of the justices to maintain the status quo until the justices can hear the case next month.
.
“Although it may be tempting to see the order as a harbinger of how the court is likely to rule on the merits, it’s better understood as a very modest procedural step to stabilize the full scope of the injunctions against the travel ban over the next four weeks,” said Steve Vladeck, CNN Supreme Court analyst and professor of law at the University of Texas School of Law.
